You Will Not Come Out From There Until You Have Paid the Last Penny… Or How a Higher Justice Works and Is Fulfilled

Often man thinks that with earthly death everything is effaced and that of the dead one should speak only well. He looks at everything only in an earthly way and in doing so forgets the fulfilment of justice by a higher power. Just as all the property which a man used during his earthly life is divided up, or sold off, or liquidated, and afterwards there is neither sight nor sound of it and those closest to him live only in memories of him, so the same principle does not hold for the deeds and the delicate threads which are bound up with the man who has departed from the earth. These cannot be separated, sold or liquidated like the property which remains after a man. They concern the sojourn of man on earth in the densest matter, they wait for him and compel him to return until he has made amends for them. This can come about through good volition and better knowledge, or through a failure to understand the meaning of the treasure which the working of the reciprocal effects conceals within itself for his development. Likewise, as reward or as recompense, they lead him to where he himself gave the impulse for it by his manner of life and by his radiation. Man himself is the builder of his own future, which is fulfilled down to the last detail.
And what does the saying that one should speak of the dead only well actually mean? To forget what was not good and to lie to others about their life, or to idealise their life for oneself? Surely it is known to everyone that even after departing from this earth man is still bound to the earth by a multitude of threads in the other world. By the fact that acquaintances or relatives speak about him, they strengthen and connect themselves to these threads left behind here, and the person concerned feels and perceives it in the other world. If the talk about him does not vibrate "in what is good alone", he experiences anew what was not good, and this creates for him new heavy experiencing, pain and wounds.
Contained in it is that one should not speak disparagingly of the life of the departed, but although not everything the deceased left behind was only good, it is possible to bring others a lesson from the life of the departed which can uncover the working of the eternal laws and show the paths along which the human spirit ought ideally to proceed. If only it were so easy.
Let us try today to open a newspaper, or the tabloid pages, on which we find a ghastly report of the violent death of a pensioner who had been missing for a long time. The newspapers write of a madman who mutilated the body and later attempted to burn it, and they do not forget to mention the quarrelsome nature of his victim as well. Let us look closely at this story; perhaps its protagonists will help us to gain a deeper insight into the weaving of the threads and, by a sincere admission, to make amends for at least a small part of our own guilt.
The pensioner who comes before us has great joy that she is permitted to confide her life story, which in her view bears within it much injustice and struggle. "Do not forget to write it all down there, what a great wrong was done to me! It is dreadful, all that happens to one who cares about the welfare of our society. I was born into difficult circumstances. I lost my parents while still young and had to care for my brother, who instead of gratitude fled abroad and comes to visit only very rarely. Likewise other people do not see at all how I took an interest in society and how in everything with which I wanted to help society I was in the right. Whether it was the dog owners who fouled the surroundings, the car owners who refused to switch off their engines by the apartment block, or the badly parked drivers whom I tried to warn about their offences, or on whom I called the police. Every one of these people rejected the rules which had been introduced in society for our better functioning and welfare. Almost none of the neighbours understood it, nor did many other people. For my goodness and my endeavour to correct them they took me for a cantankerous person, a witch, or an oddity and a recluse. At the close of my life a great injustice befell me, with which until now almost everyone has refused to concern themselves! They deprived me of my life and a terrible crime took place! No one heard me, and whoever did hear refused to follow my call for redress. Everywhere I came I strove for the best of which I was capable. People have not yet grown to that level where they could understand this endeavour of mine. I have the impression that I arrived on earth at an unsuitable time, when people are unable to understand one who is on a higher level than they themselves."
So much from the account of the chief heroine of the recent news. We, however, shall attempt to look behind the curtain, so that we may begin to understand the weaving of the threads of fate and find in everything the greatest justice.
Like every one of us, the lady pensioner too was not on earth for the first time. She brought with her the threads which connected her with her previous incarnations. When we begin to follow those of the darkest among them, we come to a concentration camp during the Second World War. There is much that is unlovely which took place in the camp in the meantime, and there is no point in mentioning it. Deeds against humanity have a great influence upon the quantity and the density of the dark threads which accompanied the lady pensioner during her following life. There too she wanted to dispense her wisdom and to be in the right, but to a great extent she came up against the truth of the others. Many conflicts arose and almost all people avoided her precisely on account of this. She ended up entirely alone, without a family, and the circle of her friends narrowed markedly from one day to the next. Many people refused to quarrel, or they kept their own counsel and refused in this way to give anyone energy and to feed disputes.
Likewise the dense dark threads too demanded their unravelling, and the lady pensioner had to pay. We do not know how much of the debt became payable during her retirement at the close of her life, but it was certainly not the whole sum. Her earthly life was suddenly ended by a firearm, and all her property remained behind her, from the flat down to her spectacles. Perhaps her view of her whole existence will change, if with every reading of this article she is permitted to sense how justice and the unshakeable Laws of God work.
And let us who still dwell on earth not seek to lay all the guilt upon the murderer who ended her life. What he did we cannot condone, but let us pray also for his welfare, that he may uncover the wrongness of his deed. Perhaps he was precisely one of her previous victims, who at a certain time remembered everything and took revenge. This does not mean that he acted rightly, for as the Lord says: Mine is the recompense, mine is the vengeance!
Let us try to see the lady pensioner too in a different light from the one in which she herself described it to us. Of course, whatever might have happened, there is no reason to deprive anyone of life, but love and severity are in every case in place. For life itself is so beautiful and there is contained in it so much splendour and beauty that it is entirely needless to spoil it for oneself in such a way.
May these words penetrate to many people of a similar fate, for nothing has been concealed or lost, but it will demand its reckoning. He who oppressed and tormented others will one day also have to pay, and if in the meantime he has not come to a better knowledge, it is quite possible that he will one day become their victim. So inexorably and so justly do the laws of the Most High work. No one will escape their working, nor will it help to hide away somewhere in solitude and to live an ascetic life out of fear that someone might find me there. Believe that the weaving in Creation is able to find the most right and the most just little paths and in good time will demand the account for what is unpaid. And if anyone should recognise his own wrong attitude in the lines set out here, it does not matter at all. The past can be made good in the present, and the best way is a change of one's volition and an amendment of oneself. Good volition, so long as it does not spring merely from one's own thoughts, has the strength to grow into later good deeds and to weaken markedly the consequences of previous ill deeds which will return to man by the lawful path. Let him not despair, but with all the strength of his spirit let him cling to the heights and pray in the very best volition for redress and for support for the newly arisen good volition. Surely even in such a difficult hour of his own awakening he will not remain without help.
Let us too strive to recognise the Laws of Creation and to follow their gradual fulfilment. There months, and not even a year, play any role. Let us note, however, how in the last while everything is hastening towards its unravelling and it is becoming apparent what each one really is and how things stand. When one day the words ring out towards us: "What are you like, O man", may there be shown within us the most beautiful of which we are capable. That is the wish for every one of us on our inner path of ascent.
