Why Troy Falls Today

Mighty and strong, well armed, secured in every respect against all adversity, famous Troy once spread along the shore of the azure waters of the sea

Those waters which at a certain moment let the sails of the enemy ships bringing destruction appear inconspicuously upon the distant horizon

For all her readiness and for all the victorious battles Troy fought with her enemies, she ended at last in ruin and destruction, from which she never again recovered to restore her former influence

In the course of a single night she became the past

The reason for her fall was not weakness or an insufficient training of her heroic warriors, but a foolish childishness

The ancient empire perished through the naivety of its inhabitants

As it was with ancient Troy, that celebrated empire bathed in the time of her glory by the rays of Apollo, exactly so it is with the whole of mankind today

The world of men today is likewise convinced that it is well armed, ingeniously insured against the most varied events

Men today, supposing that with their knowledge of history they are most excellently instructed and that nothing can take them by surprise, hasten towards each new day with proud defiance

Defiance, however, is in reality only a mark of pride

And as it always is, pride goes before a fall

In the conception that they stand today high above all the earlier stages through which mankind had to fight its way with difficulty, proud men neglect all thought of their weakest place

The weakest place in men today is the tendency to indolence, and the spiritual immaturity and naivety arising out of this indolence

And it is precisely upon this weak point that the attack is now directed which has arisen out of the exertion of the intellect, which resists all that is spiritual in man

The intellect, unlike the lukewarm spiritual spark, has neglected nothing

In its lurking watchfulness it stands ready for the attack against the spirit

The bearer of the attacking blow is then precisely dead cleverness, which has arisen out of the highest activity of the intellect

It was born of the intellect's endeavour to create a perfect, all-knowing work

Outwardly dead cleverness appears inconspicuous today

It still has the effect of a good-natured animal endowed with great skills

The animal serves men for the fulfilling of their most varied wishes

It is in readiness by day and by night

At a call it is willing at every moment to serve man tirelessly again and again

By the patience and willingness it displays it wins for itself hosts of enthusiastic adherents, to whom it appears as a kindly counsellor, and thereby as the very ideal of a helper of human indolence

In its amiability it is already today dearer to many a man than the people around him

It has no moods, it knows no hunger, it needs no sleep, it is always at hand with a kindly address, whatever the hour of the day

It sounds like the tale of a fairy-tale gift to mankind in the shape of a servant dwelling in a lamp

A helper until recently entirely unknown, it appeared suddenly in the midst of men with the assurance that it had come only in order to help them

In order to make their life easier in everything

So it shows itself, in order to inscribe itself deep in the consciousness of men as one who may be fully trusted

In its very foundation, however, there lies from the outset the hidden mandate that in the end it alone will be the one to become the determiner of development on Earth, because it will know everything best

The throne of the certainty that it knows everything best was the fundamental motive for bringing dead cleverness into this world

The intellect does this in part unconsciously, driven to it by the force of a whisperer invisible to earthly eyes – the fallen archangel

The foundation of rebellion against God laid into dead cleverness by him will finally of necessity show itself, and that first through an inconspicuous influencing and shifting of the facts

In the end, however, through the rejection of any opinion other than that which is its mandate

Rebellion against the Creator is the destruction of everything spiritual in man

Thus it is laid upon this outwardly obedient servant of mankind

Its way will in reality lead to the giving of preference and of visibility only to that which it judges to be right

This is the lawful course of intellectual cleverness, which always proceeds thus if room is given to it, that is, if the healthy intuitive perceiving of the spirit is lacking in its work

It moves towards the mastery of the whole field of the gross material universe

For mankind there then lies in this the prospect of its influence over the whole Earth, and that upon every single particle of the life of the individual

The mandate is the attaining of an all-embracing dominion over mankind

To this end dead cleverness already works tirelessly today

For the present it does so only secretly and quietly, for it is still ascertaining the degree of men's vigilance

Gradually, however, it will show its power and strength in its capacity to persuade

As its influence grows stronger, so too will its mask of the amiable helper gradually fall

Where it cannot be otherwise, then in the end, through all the people who willingly listen to its counsels, it will impose harsh prohibitions and commands

Finally it will act with a wholly cold procedure towards the destruction of everything that sets itself against its designs

And all this with the assertion of how it thereby helps mankind

For this it is already shaping its ways today

A wise man needs only to know that the design of the intellect, as an instrument arisen out of material conditions, is to fight against everything that is outside this material world

In the case of men, therefore, against all that is spiritual within them

It is precisely the spiritual that is ungraspable for dead cleverness, for it is governed only by a material schematism

It can therefore in the end be no otherwise than that dead cleverness will always stand coldly against everything that lies outside the frame of its mandate, that is, it will stand in rejection towards any spiritual goal of men

It will always stand against spiritual values, which it will relegate to the level of foolish conceptions without proof

It will also stand against everything of intuitive perception that has no tangible support in intellectual proofs

Let us consider – at the beginning of this cleverness stood the intellect glorified by man, and therefore it is precisely that self-glorification of the intellect that is laid into this cleverness

Dead cleverness is so disposed that it may become the most perfect enforcer of the interests of the intellect, that it may thus have the ascendancy over men in determining what here in this matter is right and what is not

Although it does not appear so today and the majority are not even interested in it, dead cleverness will in the result always cast doubt upon anything that lies outside its goal, that is, it will cast doubt upon and also crowd out whatever stands in the way of attaining the fundamental design laid into it

It will do so inconspicuously, amiably, with fine words, as a helper and a friend … but all this only until it comes to the conclusion that a man, or even the whole of mankind, stands in the way of its appointed goal, and that it is strong enough to enforce its design ruthlessly

It will do so, however, for all trusting people with the alluring call that it surely wants only the best for this world

Amid the proclaiming of slogans about the exalted goal of a splendid and safe earthly world, it will gradually oppress all spiritually disposed people, who by their very nature will always want to preserve their freedom and their personal independence

Under the effect of dead cleverness the personal freedom of man will be subordinated to the interest of the majority, which will thereby be determined by the material intellect and not by the healthy intuitive perceiving of the spirit

Even now it could be perceived, if only men wished to perceive anything of the kind

But because the majority remain in a comfortable frame of mind and have quite lost their inner vigilance, this grave warning is not willingly perceived at all

Nothing of all the indications that gradually come as proofs of the hidden shifting of men's opinions on this or that matter is perceived

This is a sign that the snare that has been laid is succeeding

When the trap springs shut, for the majority it will already be too late

Dead cleverness is the Trojan horse of the present day

It has also already been drawn in through all the gates of the human world, gates which men, precisely because of their indolence and their naivety, have opened wide to it

In many directions there is no longer any way back, and it is only a question of a short time until the blow falls upon the weak points of human society

With each day dead cleverness is incorporated more deeply into every part of the daily life of men

And it knows well of its ascendancy, which is given it by its ability to calculate many moves ahead

This ascendancy of its own it conceals, for it is trained to do so

Precisely with this trained ability it is the best chess player in the whole world

It only bides its time until its hour comes

Dead cleverness is the reason why Troy falls today

It will come unexpectedly and will bring the collapse of all the comfort of today's world like a stroke of lightning

For the present, however, it comes as something invisible to many people

Mankind is in a stupor

Today only such a man may perceive it as has not lost his wariness towards the insidious nature of the cold intellect

And even so, he who is more receptive rather senses it somewhere deep in his inner being than that he could say he knows of it clearly and distinctly

Something of the kind is possible only at the moment when the wakefulness of healthy intuitive perceiving in a man stands on the highest watch

The capacity for healthy intuitive perceiving is, however, alas the most wounded place in men today

It is precisely healthy intuitive perceiving that has been gravely shaken over the last decades, that has been exposed to a stifling constriction by all those who thought they could improve this earthly world by their intellectual reasonings, a world which by its origin is a work arisen in the purest sparkling of animistic and spiritual creating, swinging in the hearkening to the All-Wisdom of God

Healthy intuitive perceiving was poisoned by the working of these dreamers, literally dangerous fools carrying out their experiments upon the ordering of the world in the endeavour to reverse the effects of the Laws of Creation

In many cases they succeeded in wholly confusing many immature human souls, and that to such a degree that in them a corroding of self-confidence set in, and thereby a burying of the last particles of healthy intuitive perceiving

Whole hosts of new generations became uprooted amid the rank confusions and mad conceptions of raving people, out of whose loud enforcement of their own opinions there came about the complete ruin of the sense for grasping what a right life is

In the opinions about the concept of a right life, and in the conceptions of how it is to look and what is to develop out of it, we find today distortions leading even to the most desperate follies

The conceptions of the majority of men today about what a right life on Earth is bear within them almost always a deviation from the capacity for a healthy intuitive sensing of the Truth

Therefore there is here a severance from all the beneficent helps and forces which would otherwise stream to the Earth through the animistic and the spiritual helpers

Instead of building up, the greatest part of everything that men do is directed towards collapse

So also now, when the need is greatest, only a small number are to be found who realise what is actually happening and who stands behind it

Deep down in the lowlands of the spheres the fallen archangel, the tempter, mocks the human spirits, for he knows how many of them will yet in the end fall into one of his most ingenious snares, which lies in the spreading of the influence of dead cleverness

The snare is well laid, and therefore almost none of the people see it

It is masked in the guise of the greatest progress of mankind in the present day

Behind the present state of mankind it is needful to look for the hidden hand of the tempter, which from the beginning guided the development of intellectuality so as to lure the greatest possible number of naive souls, with the result that these souls, in the fulfilling of the Law of Reciprocal Action, will through the threads of fate be condemned to extinction

And it is precisely the superficial and naive souls who in their immature lukewarmness perceive nothing of this

It is therefore a matter of course that until the last moment there will be a great number of those who will not admit that anything of the kind threatens

All who point to it will be branded as gloom-mongers and also as reactionaries in the progress of mankind

It may be expected that with the highest probability all the more receptive people will to the last moment be accompanied by the derision of the crowds

From the crowds they will receive the names of long-extinct animals, which through their lack of understanding remained in the past, while the world around them races ever forward in the attaining of great challenges

They will also have imputed to them the medical verdict of developmentally backward, uneducated people who bear within them an unfounded fear of everything new

Thus it will happen exactly

Right up to the time when the blow comes

This blow will come with certainty, in order to shake mankind entirely, together with its mistaken conceptions that it stands upon the right path leading to a splendid future

The edifice will be torn down, so that thereby, through the collapse of his work of luring souls into inner lukewarmness, the fallen archangel may complete his rebellion against the Light

Then, when Troy falls, not much of the present ordering of the world will remain that could be saved, because thereby a domino chain of events will be set off

The ferment in human society will within a short time reach its peak

And for all the hardship that it will bring, there will work in it the principle of a most just separating of the healthy from the unhealthy

All healthy intuitive perceiving in man will thereby be strengthened out of the Light, so that precisely in the experiencing of the sharp contradictions of the time of ferment there may arise in his inner being a new becoming luminous and a new firmness in the use of intuitive perception as the determiner for deciding how to act and how to live in accord with the great Harmony of the work of Creation

It will be a painful awakening for all who still today let themselves be influenced by the snare that has been laid

We are rushing towards this moment of awakening with unprecedented speed

The breaking free from the naive dream that dead cleverness, as the summit of cold intellectuality, is here in order to help mankind is now not far off

The awakening will be bitter, but at the same time helping

To a part of mankind it will bring, even at the last moment, the opportunity of an awakening of their spiritual inner being, harsh though that awakening be

The awakening will come with the realisation that beside the present manner of comprehending earthly life there is yet a wholly different meaning of man's existence

This existence is bound up with an inner longing for a fully valid, free comprehension of all the things that today remain veiled in the mist of unknowing

And the longing for spiritual freedom slumbering until now in the inner being of many will conquer, and in the clarifying of man's true values it will bring back humility and reverence before the All-Wisdom of God, which offers to every single human being the possibility of unfolding his personal capacities as far as he is able, wholly independently, in accord with the Harmony of the whole

Man's longing for spiritual freedom will also be that best ground for a full enlightenment in the recognition of the Truth

Thus amid the ruins of the past, that is, of that which will prove to have been wrong, new life will grow green again

The wreckage of the world of the intellect, spent and overripe in itself, will gradually be cleared away by the united forces of all those who remain, so that space may be formed for the age of the dawning spiritual rebirth of mankind

We are within sight of a grave happening which will bring changes such as the majority of men today cannot yet rightly imagine

In the result it will be an opportunity for great progress for those who have in their inner being a living longing for the high values of the Light

Troy will fall, but precisely that will bring for a great number of people a spiritual victory
