Strengthening in abundance is mediated by the Light to the spiritual inner being of man precisely in the time of sleep

„The Lord gives it to His own in sleep“, so runs one of the sayings of the people

There are also still the known words which say: „The morning is wiser than the evening“

These are all realities which confirm how very important healthy sleep in the time of night, fully experienced in the spirit, is, for precisely at that time much of what was hitherto halted in its development from some cause can be carried a great part further

Literally overnight new things ripen for man, which then with the dawning of the day suddenly enter into the life already fully consciously perceived

It is not only those counsels, or the well-known promptings, which come in dreams and of which people speak from time to time

In reality they are things which appear as though seemingly unconnected with the activity of the spirit in sleep

Nevertheless it is precisely the night which is the foundation of many events that then show themselves to man in the following hours or days

This has already been spoken of in the discourses which brought nearer the task of the exalted animistic servant Celeine

She takes part also in some of the happenings relating to the body while it sleeps

In the night a new sickness can come suddenly to man, or conversely a sickness or a pain of long standing can again suddenly depart overnight

Thanks to the liveliness of the spirit, threads can also penetrate more closely to the earth, threads which then, upon some small impulse of something symbolic in the time of day, at once receive a visible material form in a progress which before appeared as impossible

This holds good, among other things, also in the learning of something purely earthly

That which long before was not clear, or in which one perhaps did not succeed because the needed skill was lacking, becomes suddenly, on awakening after one of the nights connected with the time of learning, much clearer, and that in which man did not succeed until then suddenly goes easily from the hand

All these, however, are only small things connected with the working of the spirit while the body sleeps

Above all, however, it holds good that precisely in the time of nocturnal sleep there often take place very important battles which are significant for the individual spirit in how it frees itself from many a bond with baseness and with dependence upon the material, or even from a connection with the darkness

Beside this there are then also spiritual battles waged for the purpose of freeing this whole part of the Subsequent Creation from the influence of evil

It is not, however, a battle in which armies would clash, but it is in the first place the attaining of a state in which ever more Light may come through the spiritual inner being of man into these places of the universe

That, however, in itself already means great spiritual work, and often truly even a struggle, for to make it possible that more Light may flow through the inner being of the spirit means to advance in something in ripeness, that is, in the grasping of something which hitherto remained hidden to the spirit, or which was for some reason not yet rightly received by it

Always is this battle connected with an inward progress in the receiving of something which the spirit was not before able to encompass

This shift alone, in which it is always a matter of a certain tension contained in this happening, is in reality the spiritual movement which is needful for a shift to come about

In the case of victory it is completed by inner joy and by a refreshing intimation of something great, which however means that a battle in some spiritual matter has been successfully fought out and that once again the comprehension of the inner being has widened, and thereby has drawn nearer to accord with the great Harmony of the work of Creation

In the time of night man grows and strengthens inwardly out of that which was experienced before during the day

This does not, however, happen so often, for precisely the inner will of the spirit to living movement is needed for it

As a rule this state is often experienced through the dreaming of the brain as a battle with a hostile superior force, or as a happening in which man is pursued in the dream, or is exposed to adversity of some kind in which there is a constant threat of losing, or often also, as it is experienced by many people, it is a desperate endeavour to flee from something, in which however one does not succeed

In the end, however, the ever-repeating happening disappears and is by the morning awakening almost forgotten

Over against this there are then the experiences of the state in which something hitherto unseen comes easily to man in the dream and appears to him all at once as quite childishly light

Here belongs the flying experienced in dreams without the need of any machine, that is, flying only with the help of the unfolding of the inner will

The experiencing of such dreams bears within it the mediation of a joyful progress of the spirit, which in loosening itself from the body was perhaps permitted to grasp and to receive something significant, and this called forth in it in the dream the state of easily soaring higher

There are yet many further pictures which people certainly know, for they have sometimes experienced them

Only for the most part they do not know how to connect them with anything such as the living activity of their own spiritual inner being

Yes, these are all things which are known to people, but which they have never hitherto connected with the fact that these happenings are the result of the work of the human spirit, which in the time of nocturnal sleep, loosened from the body, receives something which is still to enter its path here on earth, as a strengthening in its ripening towards complete spiritual becoming luminous

Nocturnal sleep is therefore a time in which many important things happen for man

However much the body and the brain rest, in the experiencing of the spirit many threads are untied which have ripened for release, or through the radiation of the stars new threads are tied which are only to come in turn for full utilising in the time of waking

Therein lies concealed great help, which hitherto is not recognised by most people

Thereby, however, we can in it all only see the confirmation of how superficially so valuable a gift for the spirit, lying in the possibility of an inwardly fulfilled nocturnal sleep, is handled by men

It is precisely because there are only very few people who lie down to sleep with the awareness that although the body and the brain make ready to rest, at the same time their spirit goes to work in the highest activity

Therefore only now and then do truly significant events in spiritual progress take place, for the spirit of most people is weakened and can no longer sufficiently utilise for itself the time of the release in the night

Thereby it is then dependent only upon those happenings which in their urgency come to it of themselves

But that the spirit itself, in the loosening of the radiation, should move away from the body upwards towards the Light and fully use the possibility of being permitted to ripen more quickly in experiencing, that remains with most people an entirely rare occurrence

And yet, as to how he determines his inner attunement for the time of sleep in the night, the greatest part of mankind holds an altogether unique privilege of decision

It lies wholly in the hands of the individual man with what he lies down to sleep, and whether his spirit is loosened by all the outward circumstances important for the right attunement in such a way that in a joyful soaring upwards it may in the time of the sleep of the body accomplish much that is needful on its path

Assuredly everyone has already experienced the difference between the sleep which is marked by that which precedes it in agitated restlessness, or also in a strong concentration of the intellect upon something earthly which people call the cares of this world, and that in which, in a pleasant weariness of the body, man falls quickly into deep sleep without needing to struggle with importunate thoughts

It is remarkable that for their earthly work people are able to undertake many important preparations, be it a matter of adapting themselves through their education, of travelling to their work, also of different clothing for the work, or of the equipping with many other special aids which are a condition for their earthly work, but that for the work of the spirit, which in the time of nocturnal sleep is for several reasons far more important than earthly work in the time of day, they will not devote even a few moments of preparation before sleep

But all this only confirms how far the human world on earth today is removed from a real understanding of what spiritual life is

The negligence with which the state of sleep is approached by most people is a confirmation of how everything really important escapes man today and how a disproportionate amount of strength is devoted to things which from the standpoint of spiritual existence are wholly secondary

That, however, like everything else which is overlooked by men, had gradually to become for most people the cause of increasing difficulties, which show themselves precisely in unhealthy sleep

Today for many people sleep does not bring that refreshment which should otherwise be something self-evident, that man feels fresh and joyful in the morning after a calm night filled with deep sleep

How few are the people who are able to experience anything of the kind at least once in a certain time

And yet everything which was woven by the animistic servants into the background here for the spirit through the earthly body is – as it is said – so ordered by nature that it could become a part of every night

Everything is perfectly adapted to the spiritual substance of man, so that in the time of the nightly rest of the brain it can loosen itself and draw much for its spiritual progress

And the body too, which is to a certain degree left by the spirit, is better prepared for the animistic weavers, who may then tend the body and to a certain degree fill it with the radiation of youth, so that with the morning dawn it is again ready to serve the spirit fully as the best of instruments

That, however, is also something which will only in the future become a higher degree of knowledge of a more advanced mankind

That is, that the body, which in its foundation is of unconsciously animistic origin, is precisely in the time of night more easily permeated by animistic radiation, because the actual spiritual radiation is further away and therefore does not bring through its nearness an excessive glowing, which in a certain long duration of the connection acts through its radiation upon the body with excessive pressure

The body is composed of the little particles of unconsciously animistic life, and these particles need to draw for themselves an inflow of a purely animistic kind of radiation, which is possible only in the moment when the spirit is to a certain degree distant

Many knowing people suppose that it benefits the body when it is lastingly and strongly irradiated by the spirit

They regard it as a sign of the full mastery of the instrument of the earthly body and derive from it the strength of their inner spiritual will

It is, however, arranged by the Higher animistic in the fulfilling of the Wisdom of God somewhat differently

And this in such a way that the body is here in part for itself and therefore needs also an inflow of a certain kind of animistic radiation, which then makes it possible for the spirit to be permitted to return into a dwelling repaired and set in order by this radiation

And precisely this setting in order and all the repairs come in turn in the time of night, when the spirit is at a certain distance which does not disturb the animistic in their work

People occupying themselves seriously with the knowledge of the body ascertained already millennia ago that it is precisely the body of a child which grows to size and strength best and also most healthily precisely in the time of night

But it is likewise so throughout the whole of life

All the repairs upon the body which can come from the side of the animistic working take place predominantly in the night

At this time there also comes about the tying of the threads which then begin towards morning to take up their influence upon the body

It is not so very far from the reality if people connect this happening with the working of the stars, when the radiation of the night is not overcome by the strength of the shining of the sun

And exactly the same holds good also with that nearness of the spirit

If it keeps itself always closely by the body, then this works with exactly the same effect as if the sun never set over the world of nature

Everything would be driven by the rays of the sun to exhaustion and to swift ageing, and this despite the fact that it is otherwise clear to everyone how needful the shining of the sun is in the time of day

It is likewise with the spiritual radiation in relation to the body

If there is not a sufficient distancing of the spirit from the body in the time of night, then as a result the body exhausts itself more quickly, for the rejuvenation from the inflow of animistic radiation is not granted to it

Such a man ages more quickly and his body loses its freshness, for there is not granted to it the refreshing inflow of purely animistic radiation for the enlivening of the unconsciously animistic particles of which the body, as the dwelling of the spirit, consists

Therefore we can also observe that there are people who age in their appearance more quickly than others, and conversely we can see people who keep for a long time, in spite of their years, a youthful freshness

People often say that it is a gift of nature and that it is different with every man

Also that it is given by a certain manner of living

That, however, is not the whole knowledge about the earthly body and its health

He who does not sleep healthily, that is, in such a way that the spirit can freely move away from the body, will always age more quickly in the body, for his spirit consumes with its kind of radiation the unconsciously animistic, much as the sun would consume the blossoms and the fruits in nature if it shone upon them in the time of night as well

In the divine work of Creation everything is, through the animistic forming, so wisely ordered that it can serve its purpose in the best possible way

This holds good also for the part here of the Subsequent work of Creation, of which the material worlds too are a part

Here too everything was from the beginning wisely made ready so that it could serve all creatures in the best possible way

The earthly body too the human spirit

And a part of this wisdom was also that in the time of night the spirit would in a certain release move away from the earthly body in order that it might itself work, for the spirit does not need earthly rest for itself

At the same time, however, the body, which is of a material kind and is enlivened through the radiation of the animistic as an anchorage for the higher radiation of the spiritual kind, needs sufficient time in which it can refresh itself through the radiation of the animistic kind, which happens best in the night

If people consider the lengthening of earthly life, then they must take as an inseparable part of this longevity the condition of the right use of the time of night for sleep

There is much more in it than people think

It suffices only to reflect that the liver too heals best in the night, when the inflow of animistic radiation mediates to precisely this important organ the strengthening for its refreshment and repair

Only the medicine of the new age will confirm that the cells of the liver renew themselves precisely in the time of night, when the spirit is loosened from the body

It is so because the radiation of the spirit has upon this organ an influence which shows itself precisely in a certain inflow of heat

That is given, among other things, by the lastingly great flow of blood through this important organ of the body

Whoever lets his spirit loosen itself from the body in nocturnal sleep makes it possible for the radiation of the blood to change to a greater cooling, which corresponds more to the animistic radiation

Therefore he who does not let the liver cool through the distancing of his spirit from the body burns the unconsciously animistic particles of the cells, and his liver must lose the strength for its renewal

But whoever begins to sleep rightly, to him there returns gradually also the strength of the liver, and thereby everything needful for a gradual healing and rejuvenation will be given to him

It is therefore all really simple, and it suffices to listen rightly to all the orderings of the way given by the animistic servants, and at once things can go better for man in all directions

But there is much more which is connected with the conditions of right healthy sleep

Not only longevity and health, but above all it is the gaining of new threads towards the opportunities for a really fully valuable utilising of earthly life

The spirit loosened from the body may, in the case of its striving towards the Light, prepare for itself in quickened measure many threads which through the radiation of the stars can be guided by the Alphar into its life as helping ways for the laying aside of many previous faults and shortcomings

It has already been spoken of earlier that precisely then this working of the spirit at the receiving of new knowledge in the time of sleep can more or less consciously order the ways so that the daily earthly path of man may afterwards appear as a sequence of events confirming that such a man is spiritually led, so that he may free himself as quickly as possible from everything which holds him back on the way to the Light

The life of such a man then becomes a sequence of happenings which appear to other people as something well-nigh incredible

Many then consider such a man to be chosen by a higher power, for in his life there can take place unexpected turns and meetings with other people whom he never before knew earthly, and who are nevertheless strikingly sent into his path in order to help him or to enable him to make good the most varied past failings

Thereby they always help him

He walks through life as through a great work of an epic written by the hand of an artist who has bestowed upon him a multitude of experiences which must remain denied to other people in the grey of their lives

It is, however, only that path of ascent so greatly longed for by men, conditioned first of all by the pure and simple movement of the spiritual inner being

A great story can become a part of the life of every man, for it was already from the beginning woven into the path of the spiritual spark at the very birth of its conscious participation in the work of Creation

All this is therefore only the natural consequence of the striving of the spirit, which is to be heightened here on earth through the fully valuable and healthy use of the time of nocturnal sleep by a living spirit

Many called ones from the Light, who are known to men as the Heralds of the ancient times of the nations, would not have accomplished even half of what they finally did here on earth for the Light, had their sleep not been fully used by the spirit for the highest work at the time when their body rested

For this state there holds the designation „the livingly creative working of the spirit in the vibrations of the Light“

That is, it is the time of night used so that the state is attained which brings it about that the body and the brain rest, and yet in spite of this the knowledge received from the Light is impressed by the spirit into the consciousness of the brain

Then in the time of day also such a servant of the Light is fully mindful of all that took place in the night in the finer happenings, without however anything being taken away from that which is the condition on the part of the animistic for the healthy state of the body

Anything of the kind, however, people today can no longer accomplish, although it would not be so very difficult after all

With rightly ordered conditions, everything which stands today in relation to healthy sleep strengthening both spirit and body could return quickly to the original flowing of the forces, as it has been made ready for man from the very beginning through the work of the animistic servants

The condition for this is the understanding of the time of night as a time destined for the living work of the spirit in loosening from the closer connection with the body, which is needful for the daytime of waking

Whoever finds for himself in the pictures mentioned an incitement to change his hitherto approach to the time of sleep, he can seek for himself every evening the ways in which to move purely and naturally therein to an ever higher degree of spiritual work

Never will this state reach the complete exhausting of all the helps and gifts, and so there will never come in this for man the moment in which he would not be surprised by something further in how active and how all-embracingly bestowing the working of the Light is

And it has already been mentioned that the determining of how creatively and how spiritually fully the time of sleep is used lies in the hands of every individual man

He alone holds in his hands everything needful, with what he goes to lie down to sleep and how his spirit is in the right attunement made ready for the full use of the bestowed time of loosening from the body sleeping at that time

Therein is also contained, among other things, the way to the regaining of mastery over the whole instrument of the brain, so that this may return gradually to its original task determined by God, which lies in its helping the spirit here on earth

How to proceed in this, and where the way leads to this regaining of the rule of the spirit over the brain, and thereby also over the intellect, will sometime in the future be treated of more fully in a separate text

First, however, it is needful to begin with man approaching entirely anew the time in which the body and the brain draw the needed rest in the state of sleep

As a time in which the spirit can and also is to be fully active in its striving towards the Light

With this it is needful to begin, and also to recognise where in the evening time changes need to be made, so that the man striving in this way may become truly one who listens to the demand of the Will of God, which is contained in it all from the beginning of all times
