The inner being of many a person trembles whenever he hears words about Satan

A great part of them suppose that this is merely another name for Lucifer

There is also a great number of people who live in the conviction that this name, as well as the figure connected with the name, is only an ingenious invention of the churches, which wanted to frighten their faithful so that these would live in a better way

It has become customary that the figure of Satan appeared long ago in history as the personification of evil and was fostered so that people should fear him ever more, which was to lead to greater piety, for those who fear him can all the more flee to hide themselves with God under His Love-filled protection from the constantly attacking fiend

From the angle of vision of today's material people it is thus held that Satan is only a fairy-tale figure for children and also still for a small band of simple-thinking people who believe in something of the kind

Today's modern world in its advancement has also given the figure of Satan unprecedented room in books and films, and that in many forms evoking either dreadfulness or, on the contrary, a certain grotesqueness

People suppose that with their present scientific knowledge of the coarsest outposts of matter they have dealt once and for all with such a thing as the personification of evil in Satan, and that therefore it makes no sense for them today to pause seriously over anything of the kind at all

Alas, it is only a foolish notion that mankind has perhaps already risen entirely above the pernicious influence of the principle of Lucifer and also above the aggressive working of Satan, and that people are therefore sufficiently protected from both these influences by not believing in anything of the sort

That people today are, as the saying goes, "above it all" is only a wish which creates a deceptive impression when one looks at reality

If we look well about us, we must see that on the contrary we live in a time which is the manifestation of the utmost spreading of the darkness's principle of temptation among people

The perniciousness of the principle dwells upon the Earth, and alas, in many people this principle is deeply rooted, for in them it finds fertile soil through their weakness of "knowing everything better"

The principle of Lucifer and Satan's working, dreadfully devastating in its consequences, found an echo in many souls, and now, alas, in the great time of the coming enlightenment, a living-out among these people among themselves must still take its course for some time under the pressure of the Light

A world still strongly marked by the manner of thinking and acting of those people who, without being in the least aware of it, bear upon their soul the mark of evil, because they let it in through adopting the principle of Lucifer

It is therefore a fault that the eyes are so stubbornly closed to something such as the seeking and also the clear naming of the principle of evil, which is handed on among people through many generations

Indeed it is rejected by people with a striking obduracy, and names are given to it which seek to make light of the principle of evil and to lend it seemingly good qualities, as for instance the so very widespread notion of the invigorating effect of the struggle of competitiveness, and also of all contending in which the aim is to prove oneself better than others

This is because evil fears its visible unveiling, whereby it would be recognised in the very core of its origin

But this will soon change

If only people really wanted to, then in spite of all the great philosophical quotations about human evil they would have to recognise quickly and clearly the original core which is the actual driving force

Evil surely always bears the mark of narrowed self-centredness, which is the opposite of the Love-filled Harmony proceeding from the All-Wise Creator

It matters not how strong a manifestation of self-centredness it is, for what decides is not the degree of the consequences but always only the essence of the principle out of which evil is born wherever there is soil homogeneous and suited to this principle

Thus it matters not whether it concerns great matters of society-wide extent or whether they are small matters of the personal working of an individual within the family or among other people

Where self-centredness reigns, where therefore this self-centredness in a person is what primarily influences the course of things in their development, ahead of complete harmony, compassion, kindliness and considerateness, there the conflagration of evil always threatens to blaze up

People should therefore watch vigilantly over the principle of Lucifer in themselves, so that it may not find in them even a particle of conceited self-centredness or any other impulse causing an unhealthy approach to life

For anything of the kind, however, the needed effort would have to be exerted in the right perceiving of the true motives for the thinking and acting of other people and also of themselves

If they strove for a truly objective examination, it could bring them nothing but benefit

Of objective examination, however, only very few are capable today

Objectivity is also lacking even where it would serve the understanding of the principle of evil and of the manner of its influencing of people

We can therefore speak only of a very small number of people who have ever occupied themselves with this concept with the needed earnestness and also with the aforementioned objectivity, which is a condition for a right understanding

If anyone has occupied himself with this with the earnestness that conditions a deeper penetration into the connections, then right at the outset such a person found that here two names are joined into one person

Lucifer is mentioned and also Satan

There are thus two different names which at first sight create in the eyes of people the impression of one principle of malicious revolt against God

Serious reflection upon whether in the case of Satan it is not after all a different figure rather than merely a differently named personality of the fallen archangel Lucifer can, however, lead to an important clarification

This clarification is the recognition that in this case, among other things, it is really a matter of an actual figure having its origin in the historical development of the work of Creation

From this it follows that they are two different beings

Lucifer is an archangel who failed in his glorious task, to which he was called by God

It is he too who is the originator of the principle of temptation

Satan, however, is a created spirit who succumbed to that principle of temptation and became its zealous fulfiller, with all the consequences that had to follow from it in the Laws of Creation

Satan therefore became only subsequently the one who attacked all the working of the Light in its beneficent and helping labour within the materialities

He was the one who was always instantly ready, through his servants, of whom he gradually had ever more, alas thanks to the way human spirits entangled themselves in his snares, to strike insidiously against every helping endeavour from the Light

Wherever on the part of the Light there was a pure helping activity, there it was always possible at the same time to find also the creeping threads of the dark creatures, which in the Subsequent Creation under Satan's leadership hindered the arising of every lighter deed

Lucifer is therefore the beginning of the principle of temptation in the unfolding of thoughts that want to know things better than the perfection of God

Satan is the one who spread this principle abroad like a conflagration of destruction

In the gradual recognition that he stood on the side of Lucifer as the ever more distinct adversary of the Love of God and of the Wisdom of God, he poured all his powers and skills into having as many places in the Subsequent Creation as possible poisoned with the venom of temptation

All the aptitudes that lay within him for an originally noble and lofty service he threw into that scale of the balance which was doomed to destruction from the beginning

His skill and craft he brought to a gloomy mastery which became known among people as the compulsion to seize as great a part of the worlds as possible for his own purpose

In this he influenced, among other things, for millennia whole hosts of earthly rulers, warlords and tyrants

Therefore Satan is better known than Lucifer himself, and therefore he is also subconsciously more feared by people in his aggressiveness than the fallen archangel himself, who through his origin is too strong for the human species and also alien to it

It is because Satan was for all a recognisable opponent of the Light, who led the attacking ranks of souls influenced by the tempter's principle, which always fought with every means that offered itself against the God-led endeavour to rescue and support immature human souls

He is also more comprehensible to the humanly spiritual species through his created origin

Therefore too there prevail around Satan so many dreadful fantasies and conjectures about his strength and his power over people, unlike Lucifer, who is far less comprehensible to human thinking

From all this it thus emerges that the figure bearing the name Satan must in his working really have been situated in fact precisely in the planes of the Subsequent Creation

Those people who sense that behind this name too there is something having a genuine foundation and origin in the line of development of the work of Creation are close to a clearer knowledge about Satan

Satan, so ill-famed among people, together with his minions, is thus indeed a figure having his origin in the work of Creation, and thereby also his path of existence forming a trace along which it is possible to go

Satan, who in the planes of the Light is known rather as Samael, is by origin a created spirit who arose to his consciousness in the planes of Patmos

He arose to his consciousness in glorious places permeated at all times with blissful Light, and his original task was the helping of human spirits in their strengthening towards maturity through the ruling and leading of whole hosts of souls

He was to work from the heights downwards and thus to draw near to all who needed inspiration for the wise leading of those who stood at the very beginning of development

In his glorious task he was to work at all times at the side of Ismael, as a servant closely similar to him in homogeneity

For all this he received at his arising to consciousness as a created spirit many gifts, and especially a great spiritual power which in a certain sense may be called dominion over human souls upon their paths of development through the Subsequent Creation

Out of the very essence of this task of his he was also drawn to Lucifer from the very beginning of the archangel's working

He followed him and did everything so that the human spiritual sparks should gain maturity and wisdom in their independent deciding upon the way upwards to the Light and to God

In Samael's power lay the support for everything that was to lead to the strengthening of the capacities of rulership, and thereby to the coming into their own of those spirits who were to become leaders in many directions of human activity

As in Ismael, so in him too was formed a service to a higher principle, in which by his kind is contained the leading and directing of those who at their stage of development still need close guidance through a strong spirit

In both servants therefore lay the aptitude for a certain ruling over particular parts of the planes in Creation

The place of departure was precisely the island of blissful service to the Light, Patmos

From here Ismael worked out of his starting point, who remains at all times in his faithful service to the Will of God

Samael was then to descend down into the planes, where he was to be one of the strong preparers of the paths of the Light

Precisely with this task he was sent out at the time when there passed through Creation a vibration containing the tidings of the sending of a mighty helper from the Divine realm, who was to be a supporter of human spirits in their development in the planes of the Subsequent Creation

This helper was the archangel containing Divinely animistic radiation – Lucifer, the Light-bearer

Samael was enraptured by the radiant power of this emissary and was irresistibly drawn to him

He became his admirer and also his faithful servant at the time when everything was succeeding according to the original Divine intention, that is, when help came together with the vibrations of the Love-filled leading of the young human spirits in their development

But when Lucifer turned and rose up against the Will of God, and when all those left him who in horror fled from the icy coldness of his eyes, it was Samael who remained at his side and promised to serve him faithfully further, despite all the enmity towards the Light already contained in the radiation of the archangel

Lucifer could not have had a better adjutant

In Samael's strength there lay a certain power which was able to influence many human spirits so that they let themselves be drawn into the plans and intrigues that Samael laid before them

In this there was always skilfully contained not only the fighting against the Light, but all those who joined were also at once marked by the Laws of God as allies of the Antichrist, against whom, soon after his fall, a great campaign of the hosts of knighthood from the Light was ordained

As a dreadful seal they bore it upon their soul coverings, so that they were visible to the Light

The intimation that they were on the wrong side, however, drove them ever more and more in fury against everything lighter

Together with the merciless cruelty with which they dragged all weaker souls down to themselves, there was nourished in them the craving for a still greater destruction of everything lighter

Fury drove them, and therefore they became a growing army of the darkness, in which the law of the stronger was continually nourished

Whoever did not strive for dominion and power over the rest was at once enslaved by these very ones and had to serve their appetites

And above these hosts of the raging there towered the strongest among them, Samael

Ruin was his aim and also his fate

For a long time already he had known of all this, that it would one day come

It aroused in him again and again fury in the awareness of all that he had lost together with the original luminous promise of eternal duration

He was driven by fury against the Light, and into his enmity towards the Light he dragged more and more weak and lukewarm souls which followed him

Thus there was whipped up in these hosts of lost souls an immense force which threatened to reach the very boundary of the gross material planes, where the spiritually lighter servants were always to meet helpfully with those who needed their help

In incarnating into the gross material covering of the body every single one of the emissaries of the Light was thus endangered in his task by dark souls incarnated at the same time on Earth across the bridge of degenerate womanhood

Samael always skilfully arranged the paths so that a clash occurred at the gross material boundary between the lighter spirits and the spiritual creatures sent out by him

So it was also in the world-part Ephesus, where the Light met the darkness in the most obstinate struggle, for the world-part Ephesus counted as the beam of the balance for the duration of the whole Subsequent Creation

For whole millennia an unequal struggle was waged, for the Light was always at a disadvantage under the conditions of the gross material world against people ruled through the intellect by the principle of Lucifer

Everywhere that people are driven into strife and wars there is to be found the influence of the principle of Lucifer, which is woven into the intrigues of power-hungry spirits who thus, knowingly and in ignorance, serve Samael's plans

The darkness under Samael's leadership encompassed whole parts of the Subsequent Creation

But from the Light rescue was promised

This rescue lay in the promise of God the Father through the sending of Love, which became flesh in the person of Jesus

The Son of God Jesus through His incarnation truly redeemed the further duration of the whole Subsequent Creation

He did not redeem individual human spirits, as is supposed, but through His coming He brought the anchoring of the help of God, in which lies the promise of the duration of the whole Subsequent Creation

Jesus conquered Lucifer through the anchoring of the Light in the materialities

It was His Word of Love which withstood all the assaults of the darkness and was a strengthening for everything living

He conquered Samael also, although it was precisely through his intrigues that the earthly high priests were led, who in the end drove Him earthly into the terrible end upon the cross

It was a rescuing victory for the duration of this Earth, in spite of the fact that Samael with his hosts strove for a long time to distort the Word intellectually and to trample it in the world of human thought

In the spiritual radiation the Word of the Son of God had to remain untouched by them

It shone and radiated as the promise of a further development leading lawfully to the complete liberation of the Subsequent Creation through the Emissary of God chosen for it

The fulfilment of this work of redemption, after a certain lapse of the time needed for the preparation of the working of the Justice of God, was brought by the Ray of Parzival

Parzival, as the emissary in Creation appointed for this task by God the Father, descended in the separating off of a part of His Ray down into the lowlands, in order to bring the Judgment and the ensuing liberation in the enlightenment of everything

Part of the fulfilment of the task of Parzival was also the binding of the fallen archangel

This came about after Parzival, with the Holy Light which was strengthened in Him through the radiation from Imanuel, blinded Lucifer's sight for a short time in the struggle, for in his fall he could no longer bear the Divine Light

The Light, which long ago had been to him a life-giving source of happiness, this time blinded his sight with its power, and he faltered

In that moment he was overcome and his original great power was bound

Parzival gained in the struggle the spear of Lucifer, which until then he had held as the God-appointed commission of his power over the Subsequent Creation

And with this very spear Parzival struck Samael as the first of Lucifer's servants

Samael lost consciousness

As the first spiritual being he did not stand firm in the Holy Judgment of God

The sword of Parzival accomplished the necessary work when Samael fell

His ego was scattered to the winds

Just as he did, so also the greatest part of his hosts lost consciousness, which could not bear the searing heat of the judging Light radiating from Parzival

The darkness was shattered

People on Earth have no inkling that this great struggle was fought out for them by the Light against the darkness, which under the leadership of Lucifer and Satan threw itself into revolt against the Will of God

Nothing of this is known here on Earth, that the battle in the planes deep beneath gross materiality has been completed and the darkness in its original revolt destroyed

It is because people still carry in their heads a portion of the ingrained principle from Lucifer and suppose that they know everything better

Thus it will yet take some time before this principle lives itself out here too, so that it destroys itself within itself and wholly clears the way to the refreshing liberation of mankind in the time of enlightenment that has come

Only then will it also be rightly understood what it means when the name Lucifer or Satan or Samael is uttered

It will not, however, be repeated by people in fear and lasting anxiety for their inner being, for the knowledge will bring to all the assurance that everyone who lives in a lasting volition for good and strives for an all-embracing accord and harmony with other creatures is best protected from the darkness and also from his own lukewarmness and spiritual sleep

This knowledge, and much else besides, is the harbinger of the approaching coming of the great enlightenment, which will bring to this Earth at last the so longed-for peace, a refreshing creativeness and an unprecedented spiritual ascent for all who are pure in heart

People should occupy themselves with this, so that a still deeper impression may inscribe itself in their hearts for the understanding of the grace of God, which always finds for them paths along which they can go

The Light always extends its helping hands to every creature that longs for the nearness of the Divine radiation, in which alone every kind of life in its full worth can dwell in the experiencing of its own happiness

If it swings as is granted to each particular creature by the life-giving Harmony of the Will of God, then it too is itself a part of this Harmony

It should then also always see to it that it does not fall out of this Harmony, for thereby its threads of fate would at once begin to unwind along far more sorrowful paths, which make the return conditional upon the redeeming of everything wrong

This Law of the Justice of God resounds and reaches far down into the depths, where all those are to be found who can still hear the call of the Light

May the people on Earth and also all the souls motionlessly bound in the depths of the worlds be saved, for the promise of the possible return of the lost son still stands

The Grace of God watches over the worlds and continually affords the possibility of rescue

People need only to recognise this Grace of God rightly, to grasp its outstretched hand and to step out upon the path upwards to the eternal Light in the heights
