The Prayer of the Grail

Now the New Year draws swiftly near
It contains within itself a further advance of the great events unfolding in this part of the gross material universe
We draw near to a happening which will bring for everyone strong moments in which it will not always be easy for man to find his bearings so as to have sureness for his dealings, which thereby, through the pressure of circumstances, will often be required of him at once, without the possibility of longer reflection
The events will unfold in an ever swifter advance, and much will not be able to be postponed for long, as until now was the custom with men
To stand firm in unexpected situations and not to lose oneself upon the way to the Light, that is the question which resounds through the inner being of many a reader of the Word of the Grail Message
In reality it is easy and simple to recognise what the way of the Light is, whither it leads and what it requires of man
It is indeed lighter than anything else, for the key to it lies in the childlike, longing and humble directing of the spirit towards the Light
Whither the way leads through all the moments in everyday life everyone could therefore easily survey
Yet around man today there are far too many secondary things which distract him and divert his attention and which above all corrode that which is most precious in man – his pure humility of spirit
The multitude of small things in which today almost every man on earth loses himself overlays humility within him, and together with it also the clarity and the distinctness of this way
In many men there is strongly anchored the volition to attain these small things, which precisely through the effort expended by man then seem to be great, and with them there grows also his conceit and the impression of a false value of man himself
They are trivialities which were created by the overstrained endeavour to make oneself at home in the matter here
In the endeavour to settle themselves here for the longest possible time of life men create for themselves conditions in which they wish to feel as well as possible, indeed downright comfortable
For this they then need a multitude of things which give them the feeling of this comfort and of this exceptionality, and thereby the impression of a right life lived upon a recognised social level
Thus the ordinary earthman needs an ever greater multitude of these things, until at last they multiply for him to such a degree that in the end they become for him a disobedient herd which he must guard without ceasing, so that it may not run away from him and he may not lose his feeling of supposed success and of esteem before other men
He then stands in the very midst of all these things and consumes all his forces in the defending of all that he has acquired and of which he supposes that it belongs to him
And all this surrounds him so strongly and so densely that, apart from small moments, he is no longer able at all to experience pure joy in life
The greatest part of his precious forces of the spirit he squanders upon the husbanding of things which one day he will after all leave behind here, for they come out of matter and in matter they will have to remain
How much more precious for the Creator were the first Christians, who had nothing to spare, who claimed nothing for themselves and who often sought every evening where they might newly lay down their body to rest
With gratitude to God and to the Son sent by Him they extolled the greatness of the Love of God for this, that they were permitted to know the Word of Jesus
In contrast to them the men of today must daily exert themselves in sweat and in cares for the defending of all that they have won, and their spirit, which longs to experience in a childlike and pure manner with a clear outlook upon the way, must content itself with a poor alms
Always there are here anxieties about all these small things, such as the fear for property, for one's health, for one's earthly relatives and fellow-men, for one's position, for the certainty of the fulfilment of the wishes one has set, by which man judges the success or the failure of his life
No one even admits to himself that all these are small secondary things, beyond which that truly great spiritual which is supremely important for the directing towards the Light can then no longer be seen
This supremely important thing is the experiencing of the spirit in its simple laying of itself into the higher guidance of God
Instead of this surrender, however, man has lost himself entirely in the layers of all that he has heaped up around himself and to which in many moments he still clings more than to his pure volition towards the good
He clings to it more strongly than to the following of the Will of God itself
Therefore he can no longer stride through life brightly and freely with his free spirit filled with joy
Alas, man has lost this ability in that he cannot comprehend the words of Jesus: “Be as the children”
Man here on earth cannot be a pure child of Creation
Many also of those who recognise the Word of the Grail Message do not indeed admit it to themselves, but it is so in their lives too
For the sake of small things of the material kind even the knowing man is able temporarily to deny his purity and to force out of himself the humility of the spirit
Together with humility, which is lost in the unending thicket of all the small wishes, there is then lost also all that survey from above which is needful for the free striding upon the way of the Light
And alas, precisely in this men perceive that fulfilment of human life, when they cling to these wishes and to the things arising out of these wishes, which they heap around themselves, whether of their own impulse, or only because others do so, or because it was the custom in the family
After a time almost everyone surrounds himself with a multitude of things for which he must care, which he must tend and pamper, because only through these things does he perceive that which is called the full value of earthly life
Earthman cannot live simply, and above all he cannot live so as not to cling to something of this world, even if it were only his supposed personal importance and the esteem of himself and of his name before others
This esteem and the clinging to it is a great snare of the darkness, it is the pride with which it has caught men
It is a trap in which many otherwise good and pure souls are also caught
The earthly esteem of man bound up with his earthly name has grown into the minds of men, has become unhealthily important and is a great obstacle to the humility of the spirit
Pride in one's lineage and in one's ancestors, also in oneself, in what one has achieved, what position one has gained, all this is only the result of the play of the darkness through the human intellect
And precisely this earthly pride in name and in lineage is bound up with the striving after the heaping up of flatteries, through which man derives his esteem before others
Thus man maintains these things around himself as fetishes which are to remind him of his abilities, of his earthly position and thereby of his earthly esteem before others
Yet every past esteem is nothing, it forms no claim to merit if it is not again and again confirmed by the pure striving of the spirit concerned in the present
Alas, many men live in the supposition of merits and expect that for the sake of their name, or for the sake of what they did in the past, marks of reverence will continually come to them, because in a certain rigidity this has become a custom on earth
There are so many small things which men wish to make great and which are thereby in sharp contradiction to the movement of the spirit, that it is beyond belief how all this can take root even there where there is the recognition of Truth
That these are the trees for which the wood cannot be seen, as the saying goes, many do not wish to admit until the time when suddenly they no longer know what they are to do, how to act and how to find their bearings in what is really right and what is not
Moreover many men are also persuaded from all sides by other men that these ways are the most right ones
Upon this today is founded all the allurement to the human trinkets which are not at all needful for the natural and pure development of the spirit
The pressure from other men who persuade their fellow-men is strong, and it at last sways many a one to decisions which he afterwards regrets and regards as wrong
Only after a time do they discover how they let themselves be confused and how greatly they have become entangled in the threads of their conceptions about life and about that which in it has real significance
Many then begin to make opposite decisions, until at last they are tossed about in the confusion of the happening as though they were caught in a dense net which does not permit them free decision
Then they call for help and lament how hard it is for them and how greatly they need counsel as to what to do with it all
They do not admit to themselves that many of the things which surround them they have gathered into their arms themselves and that the Light never urged them to anything of the sort
It was the human world which surrounded them with the manifold layers of all that it offers, and they took of it like those who love sweets and who for a time were left to their own choice at an overfilled counter in a confectioner's shop
But it is not to be pointed out here how all is sunk into an almost hopeless entanglement, for the coming happening will overnight make much of that which now appears important entirely null and insignificant
And for this coming happening the will towards the Light is to be strengthened in every inwardly open man
He is to be strengthened in the inward perceiving of the truly great things in Creation, for if he begins to give more heed to these things, then the way lying before him will grow clear and will become evident in that simplicity and plainness which it has had from all time
Help is to be given to those who mean it earnestly and genuinely and who exert themselves in this striving really and lastingly
The human world in its conception of life attaches importance to entirely secondary ways, which only confuse and scatter the clear intuitive perceiving of man
The strongest and the surest rope which is to hold man in the right direction is, however, entirely simple, for it is the lasting experiencing of the pure striving towards the values of the spiritual kind
According to this everything is to be approached by the knowing man
There is not to be a looking upon others and upon their judging of what is right and what is not
The greatest part of the men of today in this world know nothing at all of the real meaning of life on earth
Only the inward humble volition towards the good is that anchor which holds the spirit upon the way to the Light
In this direction the spirit is to be ready to lay aside all that in the earthly world leads him to moments in which he must dissemble or must depart from the purity of his conscience
Upon this way man may err, and many things he will recognise only when he has experienced their wrongness
In the awareness of his possible erring he is thereby always to be ready to change, thus to move further upon the way and to instruct himself with his spirit towards a still finer intuitive sensing
And for this he needs precisely humility as a strong instrument for the dissolving of his conceit, which holds itself in the folds of a certain over-sensitivity about his own person
Only he who frees himself from conceit can be truly free inwardly and outwardly, and he will then be able to confess his faults and to change
Where this is not in man, there humility cannot assert itself against the power of conceit and of a high self-estimation, and there the possibility of an advance of such a man in the recognition of his faults and thereafter in the finding of a new way is almost excluded
It is evident that in today's entangled world of the intellect man cannot have a clear view of everything that he is to do in order to stand in harmony with the Light and also with the human ordering of the world
He has then the full right to answer to the many importunate questions of the outer world that he does not know, that he has no clarity in this or that matter and that he needs more knowledge in order to be able to answer
No one then has the right to force from him a decisive standpoint if he himself has not arrived at it and cannot say that he knows all that is needful about this or that for his decision
With a clear and calm voice every pressure in the sense of the attacking words is to be refused: “You must decide!”, “You must have an opinion on this matter!”, “It is surely clear, how can you not see it!”
Freed from this urging of individuals and of crowds is to be everyone who truly strives for the Light and who seeks for everything the right way to a decision
For this there is also given to him from the Light a help which lies in prayer
This help, however, men do not yet know, and therefore they do not make use of its strengthening kind in their daily life
Many men earnestly striving towards the Light also seek the way to have always with them the right knowledge of the Grail, formed into a simple prayer for swift help to their spirit
Therefore we bring here a simple prayer, as one of the many forms of the invoking of the Creator and of His all-wise Will
This prayer can be permanently at hand for each of those men who do not wish to lose the mentioned living connection with the heights of the Light in their everyday life
All the knowledge brought by Parzival, the promised Son of Man, is here united into a prayer which the man who has accepted the Truth of the Grail Message is to glow through to the highest flaring up of his spiritual flame
THE PRAYER
I believe in the GRAIL,
the Chalice of Life, bestowed upon the work of Creation by GOD THE FATHER
I believe in PARZIVAL,
the King of the GRAIL brought forth by God and the Guardian of the work of Creation
I believe in JESUS,
the Son of God, the Love of God, Who is with GOD THE FATHER in the realm of His eternal Light
I believe in IMANUEL,
THE HOLY SPIRIT, Who remains above all that is created, so that the Justice of God may always be fulfilled in the wise effect of His Laws
I unite my spirit with the Light,
which is also here on earth all around and which in every moment bears witness to the tidings of God and of the Grail
In prayer to Thee, Lord, I beseech the angels, the animistic and the spiritual helpers, the servants of the Grail,
liberation and salvation, let them now come in Justice, in Purity and in Love to me and to all other men, even as we deserve it through our lives
AMEN
Let this prayer, together with other forms of the fervent linking of the spirit with the Light, become a helping signpost in the most important moments of the being of every pure man faithful to the Light
It may be experienced as a whole and also in parts, as a connecting rescue rope independently brought to life, in which the spirit will find trust and sureness for himself and for others
Whoever among the readers fulfils with certainty all that is contained in the prayer may raise its power, even as all the servants of the Light in the heights of Creation perceive it
If this is really so, then in the first part of the prayer such a spirit devoted to the Light may exchange the word I BELIEVE for the word I KNOW, that is, “I have complete knowledge”, and the unshakable conviction flowing from it
If, however, he swings wholly in accord with the Will of God and does not let himself be deflected from this Will, then he may lay into the prayer the word I SERVE
The prayer then reads either:
I KNOW OF THE GRAIL, the Chalice of Life, bestowed by GOD THE FATHER upon the work of Creation …
or:
I SERVE THE GRAIL, the Chalice of Life, bestowed by GOD THE FATHER upon the work of Creation …
The power in which the spirit longs to find himself and with which he longs to unite himself is always to proceed from his inward surrender to the sublime service
He may therefore choose at the beginning of the words, according to his healthy self-judgment, from the words: I BELIEVE, or I KNOW, or also I SERVE
Yet it should always be right, entirely free from self-overestimation, for as it is ordained by the Laws of Creation, all that swings in truthfulness is valued, and therefore the words should be rightly chosen, so that along them a proportionate help may descend to man
Where there is a reaching after too strong a setting, there such a connection is easily glowed through in the power of the Light, and if this is out of proportion to the real maturity of man, then the connection will not bear such a too strong radiation and will burn up and collapse, without granting even a part of that help which in the given moment could have been very helpful
As in all things, so also here it holds good, less is more
Genuine warmth and inward opening will always mediate to man all the needful helps which are offered for him
Let the prayer given above therefore be taken as a strong helping rope which is offered for the coming happening on earth
The prayer is to be experienced and intuitively perceived in childlike trustfulness towards God and towards His Lovingness, which every human spirit unburdened by intellectual doubt and narrowness bears within himself
Prayer is an instrument for the spirit, and as with such it is to be worked with
In ever new degrees of experiencing it is to be intuitively perceived, and with it the highest swinging of intuitive perception is to be linked
That does not come about without trying, without exertion, even in such a matter as prayer
Men need to learn to pray rightly
Only thus will this living manner of connection be able to serve them and to help them upon their way through life
Whoever does not occupy himself with prayer in the living work of his spirit does not bear within himself sufficient trust towards God and towards His Work, no matter how he may call it
The greatest obstacle is precisely the intellect, which endeavours to weaken the fervent trust with unfitting thoughts and with doubts as to whether such a thing as prayer can have any effect at all
This struggle man must take upon himself and must also gain the victory in it with his spirit, so that the intellect may gradually be set aside and may no longer hinder the fervour and the living power which penetrates from the spirit through the words upwards to the Light
Blessed are those who learn to pray, so that they may glorify God and His Work
