The Path Blessed By the Light

Very many men ask ever more often how they are to guide their steps through life in order rightly to fulfil the Holy Divine call to the human spirit contained in the book In the Light of Truth

On the one hand the earnestness of the words of the individual texts from the work The Grail Message naturally weighs upon them, which with unyielding emphasis summons them to the highest spiritual striving for the rescue of themselves and of other men

At the same time, however, they are on the other hand exposed to the disproportionate pressure of the present age, which claims for itself the greatest part of their attention if they wish to hold their ground and are not to make the slightest mistake in daily life in their obligations towards their fellow men in the family, towards friends, in the earning of money

The utmost attention must also be maintained towards the state administration and the authorities, where by purely intellectual procedures ever new regulations are devised, which are then demanded without regard to the diversity of human natures

For every hesitation and wavering the society of today harshly punishes above all those who are the most vulnerable

Many men are oppressed by the pressure of society with fear of the time to come, which often causes in them a complete paralysis in thought and in deed

It may be said that life today, with its dangers lying in wait around man both hidden and visible, has already gone far beyond all the conditions which may still be regarded as suitable for spiritual ripening in the earthly

Almost daily the vigilance of men living in an earthly body is tested by every possible artifice of materialists heavily schooled in the intellect

Thereby many a life of a spiritual man is entirely fettered, and in the end wholly diverted from the original mission for which he was perhaps born on Earth

Such men, who came perhaps with a mission of a higher kind, do not then succeed in fully unfolding their abilities, because the greater part of their strength is swallowed up by the insistence of the individual tasks and duties which have nothing in common with the spiritual ascent of man, since they arose in the intellectual ordering of materialistically acting men for the earthly world alone as such

Thereby much blessing is lost which could arise for this Earth if the many human spirits who come to mediate help of a purely spiritual kind were not disturbingly drawn away from the weaving of the fine luminous threads which are vitally needed for the refreshing of the earthly world

This holds good especially for a part of earthly womanhood, which has already quite departed from its most important task, that of bringing down help of a fine kind as connections with the ideal planes situated high above the Subsequent Creation

All this, however, is corroded by the thousand petty customs of social life which were devised in the course of centuries by vain people in the endeavour thereby to prove that they know everything best

Thus fashion arose, styles of life were created, there is also the glorification of the body, the pressure for equality with men in activities which originally were never to have arisen on Earth at all, and many other matters which grip man from childhood to the end of his earthly days

The inner connecting is lost under the pressure exerted by the present ordering of human society upon the task of woman

The exalted service of receiving the streams of Light is thus almost entirely lacking precisely in the present time of great changes which are already drawing near to the Earth

There are lacking the so greatly needed threads of the pure helping streams which in the finer world mediate support and a way out for all who strive towards the Light

Therefore we find among men today so much hopelessness and despair in the world of the forms of thought and of intuitive perception, that is on the psychic plane, as modern medicine today jointly calls it

And in addition there is the ever more manifest working of the forces of the animistic servants, who follow the Will of God in the fulfilment of all the threads returning with accelerated speed in the Law of Reciprocal Action

It appears as though demands were rushing upon earthly man from many sides at once

Still worse, however, is the state of the world of thought-forms which surrounds present-day earthly mankind

Unsurveyable hosts of the most bizarre forms and shapes, among which the most threatening to man are the furies and the harpies, which lie in wait for his slightest wavering in order to fling themselves upon him at once in a merciless tearing of his inner being through fear, doubt and hopelessness as to the further prospect of earthly life

Such is the present state, which almost without exception weighs in some measure upon every one of men

Truly there are but few who can say that over a long time they go calmly and without wavering upon their way through life, so that they can speak with certainty of a lasting ascent without anything outward disquieting them the while

The original ascent, which was to have been the most important part of the meaning of men's earthly life, both the inner spiritual ascent and the social and material one, changed already millennia ago into a desperate struggle to preserve the personal worth and honour of those who still admit anything of the kind

Honourableness, the pure charm of womanhood, the fearless chivalry of men, all this has long since become something that again and again slips from the hands of those who long for it

Yet the recognition of the Truth points towards these values a plain path which every single man is able to walk

This path leads through the finding of an inner peacefulness, which for the human spirit arises out of the recognition of truly firm certainties to hold to

To these certainties belongs the recognition that human life has a spiritual foundation and that the high meaning and goal of human existence lies in the blessed return to the spiritual home, which is to be found high above everything material

The awareness of this recognition pours at once and directly into every inwardly open man the certainty that if he permanently maintains his striving in the longing for the nearness of God, and adapts everything in his life to it, he will one day reach that spiritual home

The certainty of attaining Paradise lies in a persevering, childlike pure striving to draw nearer to God

The difference lies only in how swiftly the human spirit reaches his home in the Light

Thus we always find here a certain number of inwardly living men who hold before their eyes the inner picture that the spiritual home must be reached as swiftly as possible, in order once and for all to escape the danger of all the temptations which they fear are for them a lasting threat leading to a fall into perdition

Precisely in such men there then most often grows an inner pressure called forth by the supposition that they are missing the precious time appointed them for the ascent

If, however, this pressure grows all too swiftly, then it brings such men an uprooting from their own firm soil, upon which they were formed into what they are today

Thereby they are in the end wholly uncertain within themselves

On the basis of this perception they let themselves be carried away to various rash acts in thought and in deed, which they suppose to be that very accelerated path to the Light

In their state of unrest they then also open themselves too trustingly to the influence of various visionaries who proclaim that they are here for the rescue of the few granted grace and to lead their host to the Light

The opposite of this, however, is often the reality

An unhealthy unrest, haste, and at the same time a great immaturity are the accompanying signs of such endeavours

In every respect those who hasten towards the Light in an overwrought manner are easily influenced, so that another may lead them to a severance from the present or to the awakening of some form of religious rapture or fanaticism

This inner unrest of the soul is not in itself something bad, for it is often a sign of an inward recognition, filled with living receptivity, that the Earth is not the place appointed for the attaining of “the blessed fulfilment of the spirit”

That place is truly the Paradise of human spirits, situated high in the Light

What is unhealthy in all this is above all when to the inner unrest of the soul there is added a wrong conduct towards those around who think otherwise, when the failure of everything is laid to their blame, which causes these more receptive men suddenly to feel themselves uprooted on Earth

This wrong approach is the judging and the condemning of one's fellow men, to which many suppose themselves predestined through the knowledge of The Grail Message, which awakened in them an oversensitive receptivity

Receptivity, however, does not entitle a man to accuse others of the fact that he feels himself unhappy

For everyone there still holds good the great strengthening from the Light, “Boldly forward is dear to God”

Beyond this stage, which in some form comes to almost everyone who has inwardly awakened, he is however to move further to a new activity, which likewise opens before him

He can and shall go further, so that through his kind of working he may be a gain for this world

In The Grail Message he also has described for him all the conditions for attaining that he become one of the ideal men

He is to go further without becoming stuck in an endless complaining about other men

Therein there is contained for him a new refreshment and a new strengthening, that he may go further in his whole ascent

Whoever remains for a long time in such a state of oversensitive receptivity exposes himself to the danger that he himself will bear the responsibility for all the forms of aggrieved and injured thoughts which he created and sent out into the world of thought

Anything of the kind is not to be the consequence of the soul's receptivity

On the contrary, a strong connection should always be sought with such men as more readily divine or even recognise that all existence is not bound only to the material world, but that a strong and pure connection with the Light is the most natural path of inner joy and of confidence

To grow rigid and to halt in the permanent supposition that the world is only evil and bad is something unhealthy

Unhealthy also is the violent tearing apart of family and social bonds, when the connecting bridges to other men are pulled down in the conception that in this lies one's own spiritual rescue, without such a withdrawal being preceded by the living out and the laying aside of all the threads of fate resting in those relationships

The harm which such conduct of men otherwise wishing the good brings about does not then lead to the liberation of the spirit, but solely and only to the knotting on of further threads of fate, which out of the unhealthy unrest of the soul must be woven by the weavers if even a small part of the conduct bears within itself overwroughtness and traces of obstinacy or of complete confusion of thought

Instead of an accelerated rising upward towards the Light, the wrongly worked-through tension of the soul towards movement brings such a man only a delay upon his path, for sooner or later there will come to him a new necessity of atoning for his blunders, through which in his zeal he perhaps caused a disturbance of the harmony and an injury by feverishly pronouncing a wrong judgment upon someone among other men

The way out for liberation from all the threads of the past with other men is an all-embracing forgiveness, together with the readiness to make good all that has been caused by the man himself

Anything of the kind cannot be done in haste and in inner disharmony

It first needs to be preceded by an inner progress to the stage of a complete release from everything that in some way intervened in a man's life

In many a case haste works rather against spiritual progress instead of any support being contained in it

Thus it happens that those who feverishly hasten forward often give the more mature man who sees the ethereal happenings the opportunity to behold how, in the very straining of all their forces, they drag behind them threads from the past which cling to them and, through the endeavour after accelerated progress, are not laid aside but only stretched like an elastic web, or like firmly wound climbing tendrils

At a certain moment this stretching of the threads then causes a man to be snatched back exactly to the place from which he wished to free himself in a wrong manner

In this place he will be held fast until, only in a growing calm and in the finding of his own harmony, he rouses himself rightly so that he can really begin to free himself and thus walk freely and unhindered upward

There is a great difference between an immature unrest and the movement which arises out of the knowledge of all the connections concerning the true path of the human spirit in the Subsequent Creation

Where knowledge is to be found, there this unrest of the inner being also changes into an active mobility, which is the most precious thing that helps man's inner being to advance

It is therefore needful always to add to that inner urge towards movement forward the enlightenment which bears within itself the knowledge of the Will of the Creator

Knowledge in itself creates the ideal conditions for the spiritually striving man to walk calmly and perseveringly forward, mastering step by step one stage of spiritual growth after another

The concept “calmly”, however, in no case means idly or slothfully

A calm perseverance in advancing forward belongs to the highest art of the human spirit in acquiring the ability to strive by the right paths upward to the blessed spiritual homeland

Precisely therein there is also contained, for this healthy manner of walking through life, the so important and precious blessing from the Light

Instead of the exhaustion which comes almost always when there is a feverish hastening forward, in a calm walking the spiritual forces increase with every step

In a calm advancing in the work of the spirit ever new abilities also gradually open up, which heighten the strength of effect in the working of such a spiritually active man and spread the reach of his pure striving ever further among men

Truly nothing can be hurried, for in the wise ordering of the work of Creation everything has its place, and for the connecting with the Light there hold good conditions determined from above downward

Therein much important knowledge lies hidden

Every striving which in its volition outruns the ripeness of the spirit becomes in the end harmful to the Light, however sincerely and honestly it may be meant

It also holds good that for a truly great working it is the Light that determines the paths, and not the human will, which in contrast to the All-Wisdom of God, working through the helps from the Light, has narrow limits of comprehension

This alone shows how important a condition for a true walking upon the path blessed by the Light is the ability to learn to listen inwardly to the counsels and the directions granted to the spirit from the heights

To acquire something of the kind is also a condition for the true service to the Light which many a man with The Grail Message in his hands perhaps longs to enter upon

Therein lies the true guidance, at the end of which stand inwardly open earthly men in gross material bodies

It is the wise guidance of the Light, which in its manifested effects in the earthly world is then of a lasting kind, thereby bringing to individuals and to the whole of mankind a long-enduring help and rescue

Such guidance now comes through the Way of the Grail

It is a guidance bearing within itself a scope appointed not only for the brief moment of the present, but in it there are always laid the foundations for the prospect of millennia of human life on Earth

The emphasis of the wise guidance appointed from the Light will always be directed towards the need for an inwardly pure, joyful and at the same time calm striving upward

Therein is contained the foundation of all that is healthy and needful for the ascent in any age and out of any conditions of life on Earth

An ascent founded upon this foundation can begin at any time and is, in its growth upward within the forces of the human spirit, without limit

This because the human spirit, throughout his duration in eternity, will never exhaust for himself the possibility of an ever new recognition of the vastness of the work of Creation

In order to attain the possibility of his duration in eternity, he needs to develop and in ripening to reach a high degree of radiance of his spirit

That is precisely the work which no one else will do for him

In reality it is not work as such, as we know it here on Earth, but a living childlike longing to recognise in what manner the Will of God expresses itself in the most varied happenings on the various planes of the work of Creation

Therein lies the gaining of a degree of spiritual wisdom, if the inward comprehension in man penetrates into the fine degrees of knowledge in matters which for a less mature spirit remain shrouded in an impenetrable veil of ignorance

For this living recognition no special conditions are needed, and it may be begun directly and at once

The only thing needful for man in this is childlikeness and the courage to leave the former limits of the rigid tracks which were created by other men as a temporary intermediate stage of the knowledge about the Creator and His work

If the spirit maintains sufficient modesty in this, then there will also gradually open to him the ability to perceive streams which other men had to pass by

Modesty is the best soil for the listening to and the receiving of anything higher

Modesty in itself excludes the work of the intellect with its loud cry that it knows everything best

A modest, joyful activity is therefore that path blessed by the Light for the human spirit

It is at the same time also the path which naturally holds man in the golden mean between the extremes of restless feverishness and lukewarm sloth

To acquire the walking through life upon this path of the golden mean is to acquire the holding of a lasting harmony within one's inner being

Unhappily there is today on Earth only a very small number of such men as have attained this high degree of ripeness of the spirit

Their number is pitiful compared with how many should in reality already be here in the full deployment of their forces

Since, however, the promised spiritual enlightenment through the nearness of the Ray of Parzival ever gains in strength, it may be expected with hope that a great part of those still sleeping will yet soon awaken

Thereby there will subsequently also be set in motion on Earth hitherto unknown forces flowing from the divine blessing for the establishing of the new age of the promised awakening of mankind

Thereby there will gradually be able to be more Light among men again
