The Lifeless World

If a man hears the term lifelessness, and if he tries to form some image of this term within himself, then with the greatest certainty a landscape of strange desolation will arise before his eye

To one there may perhaps appear a waste land gripped by endless ice, to another sharp inaccessible cliffs, while yet another will have before him the picture of the cratered surface of a celestial body upon which there have as yet been, and evidently never will be, the slightest conditions for the forming of life

Many further pictures may still show themselves

Always, however, they will bear one common trait

In them the warmly living play of colour will be lacking, and the whole aspect will awaken the impression of a motionlessness enduring through all ages

Thus in most men the pictures belonging to the term lifelessness take shape before their eyes

There streams from them coldness, anguish, and the impression of a condition which offers no possibility of a change for the better

In the thoughts of many all this refers as a rule to distant planets and stars circling in the depths of the dark interspace

Yet it does not occur to anyone in the least that this picture holds good not only for the mentioned places in the far universe, which by their constitution are deprived of the possibility of life, but that it is a spiritual condition on earth, if we look with the inner eye upon the human world here

From the spiritual point of view the world of men today is lifeless

However actively men may outwardly appear to move, often even in a movement whipped up to a feverish degree, it is precisely their inner spiritual world that for the most part bears motionlessness within itself

Everywhere there stretches a grey mist in which the whole earth is enveloped, where instead of bright living colours and hopeful joy everything bears the marks of spiritual faintness

Only here and there does the small light of a spark gleam, which still strives to tear itself upwards out of the constricting mist, so that it may be permitted to receive into itself the Light which even now in its nearness stands not far above this earth

Most men, however, sleep deeply within, and their sleep approaches the mentioned condition of motionless rigidity

The longing for the inner soaring upwards towards the Light has been extinguished in a great part of mankind

The individual man thus passes through life in such a way that, by mechanically repeating all that he has learned in the family and all that school has impressed upon him or that he has himself acquired in intellectual knowledge, he arranges for himself the best possible use of time outwardly in the external world of matter

The experiences of previous generations have shaped for him well-worn material grooves in this, which are continually being polished to something better, so that the everyday life of the majority may flow quietly and comfortably, without great shocks

Mankind has formed the outward social conditions of life in such a way that within them their spiritual inner being finally lies motionless, without any necessity for movement

Thus it goes on year after year, already for many decades

Mankind has grown spiritually rigid, as though nothing of importance were taking place in the universe close above the earth

Here and there reports emerge confirming the great changes which range themselves ever more thickly one after the other, yet these are outwardly doggedly suppressed and silenced

Ears and eyes are sealed with wax kneaded from the successes of the human intellect, which tenaciously denies everything that calls for a more inward perceiving in man

The result of this is the spiritual lifelessness prevailing in the majority on earth

Spiritual movement is suppressed, it is crowded out of the daily round of the inwardly empty multitudes surging to and fro over this earth after gain or after enjoyments and amusement

The only cares which men still have are connected with a lack in one of the three mentioned things, which are the driving force of the masses

None of this, however, is a reason for the movement of the spirit

The serious questions of human existence are replaced by an occupation with ever more artificial problems, which awaken a bitter smile in those who hold within themselves at least a part of the higher knowledge of the true meaning of human life

Before the eyes of men the media set cares painted into comical connections, at which half a century ago the majority of the inhabitants of the earth would still have laughed, because for their own lives these would have seemed to them wholly unessential

All this bears witness to the confusion, the immaturity and also the decline of liveliness in the thinking of a great part of the men of today

Wholly fallow lies the soil in the human spirit, which yet urgently calls for fructification and ennoblement to the highest degree of a human existence glowing through and through

The motionlessness of intuitive perception has, however, become so ingrained that no one any longer perceives it in its threatening devastation

On the part of men all attention and strength is directed solely upon the outward forms of the gross material world

Into these all energy is flung

To this are subordinated all the human sacrifices which men prize, which alone are acknowledged and which are celebrated according to their greatness

Without anyone reflecting whether it was thus originally willed from the Light, the path is thereby set for the deification of the intellect as the leader of all materialism

Only those results are valued which have a visible form and can be turned to material profit

For mankind today only that has worth which is visible

That which is hidden from the eyes appears to carry no weight

The original path set from the Light, that is, from the Will of God, shows meanwhile sharply and in contrast that everything was meant to be exactly the reverse

All the strength of the human spirit should always first have been devoted to the inner recognition of the meaning of existence, and to the soaring upwards vividly born of it towards the high values of the purest humanity

Only afterwards should the effort of men have been directed towards the shaping of progress outwardly

Only out of the inwardly living recognition of the Creator's purpose with this earth and with the mankind dwelling upon it should the outer world have been shaped and formed

For all development it should always have been the alert spiritual movement which determines the direction

It is not the thoughts of men that are to be the guiding creator of human life, but precisely the inward intuitive perceiving which is to be decisive for the direction of development

The alert intuitive perception making itself heard through the voice of conscience should never have been thrust back to the level upon which it stands with men today

It should always have stood in connection with the All-Wisdom of God, which determines whether the path in the earthly world is the right one, and therewith blessed with the helps descending from the Light

This, however, has long since been forgotten

Therefore we can speak of an inward lifelessness

Spiritual lifelessness is the exact designation, for it is precisely the intuitive perception which is the most precious thing that should always have counted with men, in contrast to the present manner of thinking, in which the intellect with its orientation towards outward forms keeps the chief influence

If liveliness in intuitive perceiving is lacking, then from the human point of view all else is already cold and lifeless

And alas, this spiritual lifelessness has penetrated into everything, it has surrounded all the doings of men from the very moment of the arising of the volition

It holds good for absolutely every activity of men

Nothing that belongs to the present way of life is exempt from it

Thus it comes about that everything which concerns the actual endeavour to comprehend God and His Work of Creation merely through research in thought without experiencing it in intuitive perception, that is, through the intellectual investigation of what is and what is not Truth, as is generally done today, has hitherto necessarily had to suffer enormous harm in the hands of earthmen through the influence of the spiritual lifelessness in their doings

The arid striving of thought is here too falsely exchanged by most men for the original movement of intuitive perception

Without this leading even to the least hesitation, under the pressure of the intellect that important spiritual intuitive perceiving is deceptively exchanged for the work of thought in the comprehension of things

Thereby, however, all such striving necessarily ranks with lifelessness, however high and noble the original aim may perhaps have appeared

Here too, therefore, all the effort of men is directed outwards

Outward forms are regarded as the most important proof of the mobility of man

Thus the impression arises that where nothing happens outwardly there is death

Herein, however, lies the greatest error of men, including those who consider themselves as so-called spiritually striving

Often it is precisely the reverse

Where everything is done only for the sake of outward visible movement, there is found not seldom the inward immobility of the spirit, in which precisely the receptivity for the important vibration of the human conscience has become wholly paralysed

The manifestations of such visible activity will always bear a lack of that all-embracing beneficial and noble kindliness

In such outward striving, in which no room is given to the receptivity of the inner conscience, there always comes about the assailing and oppressing of other men who do not resonate with the established direction of the visible activity

With spiritually striving men it is therewith a twofold indictment that they are unable rightly to recognise this exchange

We can observe it very clearly precisely in the history of most religious and philosophical currents

Today we still see it also in all endeavours to spread political and economic influence

This points to the faultiness of men's approach to outward life from the very foundation

Where the intuitive perceiving that manifests itself in childlike simple receptivity and pure nobility of character in all dealings does not stand in the first place, there the remaining effort necessarily lacks the spiritual core in which alone lies the germinating power of a lasting ascent

This condition has been given from the beginning, when the humanly spiritual species was permitted to enter upon its activity on this earth

In this lay, and today also lies, the true task of man

All building up needs to unfold from inward liveliness, from the receptivity of intuitive perception and from alertness

Everything else, however much it may appear to be working for the Light, that is, to the glory of God and of His Work, carries within itself wings already broken beforehand, which cripples every soaring upwards towards the steps of God's throne

Laborious studies, the rummaging in writings and the endeavour after a materially intellectual comprehension of something so living as the Truth are something that weakens all spiritual enthusiasm to the point of complete suffocation

The drawing near to the Truth demands of man solely a pure fullness of intuitive perception at the level of the perceiving of radiations

If this work of the spirit is replaced by the intellect, even though the man concerned speaks of the very highest happenings in the primordially eternal planes of Light and carries the loftiest concepts in his mouth, then, from the standpoint of the demand of the Will of God upon the humanly spiritual species in Creation, he appears inwardly lifeless

When will men at last comprehend that one cannot draw near to the Light through intellectual knowledge of dates and of all the events on earth surrounding the working of the Divine Trigon, but solely through the vibration of pure intuitive perception

The precious work of the Son of Man, the Grail Message, as the earthly formed Holy Word of Truth, was not given to men for intellectual study, but in the first place to be experienced in living pictures

Through living pictures fitting into one another the Word of Truth was to be absorbed into the spiritual inner being, in order to strengthen the spark in its becoming luminous towards a life-giving flame

That which was laid into earthly words through God's working remains, alas, unused

This because, as a rule, immediately after the first reading of the lectures the enthusiasm of the spirit at the recognition of the Holy Word passes swiftly over into dissecting brooding in fussy labour, in the endeavour to sort everything out so that it may be better understood by the clumsily thought-working part of the overgrown cerebrum

Thereby the Word in its beneficent radiation is at once broken up into single pieces, and instead of the refreshment contained in its wholeness there sets in an aridly laborious work with the details of words and sentences, which is held to be valuable because for the intellect it is visible and therewith tangible work

Swiftly the intuitive perception is thrust aside even there where, through the Wisdom of God, everything has been prepared by the inlaid radiation in the most ideal manner for the human comprehension of today, so that the spirit may preserve its liveliness and not permit within itself the return of the rule of thought-bound cleverness

In the first place it is precisely the intuitive perception in the inner being of man which was and is to be struck by the radiance of the Ray of Light contained in the Grail Message

If only earthmen were permitted to see that great experience of those who, after laying aside the earthly covering of the body, soon discovered with astonishment that what they had laboriously striven after their whole life long was in reality not asked of them, while on the contrary that which was expected as the most precious thing with which they could have equipped themselves for their further path had in the end remained unused in complete neglect

Sadly then stands this or that soul with a poor alms in its hands, when it is called to render account for the way in which it was permitted to husband the Holy Word on earth

Only in the beyond does it recognise how it too, almost without any resistance from its intuitive perception, succumbed to learned old habits in so important a moment of the opportunity of transformation to become more permeated by the spirit, when through the Word an undreamt-of help of the Light was granted to it

It becomes aware how that which it took for the work of the spirit was again only skilfully masked work of the intellect

There the detailed knowledge, going year by year, of all the events surrounding the earthly working of the Son of Man, and of all the circles of luminous spirits then working around Him, avails it nothing, if at the same time there was not contained in it the living receptivity for the comprehension of the All-Wisdom of God, which in all happenings always acknowledges as alone valuable that which springs forth from the ardent volition of the spirit

On the contrary, that delicately radiant and pure thing with which the spiritual inner being overflowed, however much it was lived through on earth in stillness and seclusion and therewith outwardly invisible to earthly eyes, is to the astonishment of the soul valued beyond measure, in place of all the hours of intellectual research, which of a sudden appear entirely empty, if moreover the Justice of God has not found in them the element of vanity in wishing to know everything better than others

If knowledge is ever spoken of as an acquaintance with the Laws of the Work of Creation, then this knowledge is to become the living possession of the spirit, that is, it is to pass over into all intuitive perceiving, thinking and acting as an expression of maturity and nobility of character

Without this natural outward manifestation of the liveliness of intuitive perception we can speak of the danger of an inward lifelessness, however great the words about God and His Will may sound in the mouths of many men

But today everything is so buried beneath a thousand motives in the self-assertion of men among one another, that only after laying aside all that is earthly may the soul recognise the terrible delusion to which it was itself exposed on earth through the influence of the intellect

Nothing then remains for it but to sink upon its knees and fervently to plead for forgiveness

In the laws of the Work of Creation much can naturally be forgiven, yet the imprint of the wrong example of men who call themselves spiritual on earth remains still further

Thereby the condition of grey lifelessness continues on, without it being possible to find the promise of a kindling hope of a genuine spiritual upsurge of mankind

The working of the souls from the beyond who strive for the awakening is today only very little perceived by earthmen

Meanwhile with every further day the pressure of the Light increases, demanding that in men a soil be formed for the great spiritual enlightenment

Under the increasing pressure of the Light all animistic activity awakens refreshingly

Thus immediately beside the general desperate condition of the human spirits the vividly weaving animistic works as a contrast through its aliveness, its wealth of colour and also through the rhythmic vibration which quivers everywhere around

Everything calls earthman to awaken, so that at last the right path may be entered upon by him

For many men fervently striving to enter upon the path blessed by the Light there comes within sight the approaching Festival of the Outpouring of the Power of the Holy Spirit, the Festival of the Holy Dove in the Grail at the summit of the Work of Creation

This Power will very soon again be granted to the whole Work of Creation, and thus also to the human spirits on this earth, if they open themselves to it

Therein one may divine the promise of hope that with this new influx of the Holy Power of God the state of the happening will so shift that the lifelessness present throughout all mankind will be shaken, and that at least with some men an awakening will come about in their inner being

Those who know of the approaching Festival of the Holy Dove are to prepare themselves inwardly already now, so that the soil within them may be made ready in the purest striving of the spirit

Through the reception of the Power out of the graciousness of God it will be possible for more radiance to be given through inwardly enlivened individual men into the grey lifelessness here

In this lies very much

Contained in it is an awakening that goes in the right direction, that is, from within outwards

What is then formed from it in the visible world of gross materiality, and maintains for itself a lasting connection with the Light, that will be able to be called a true human activity according to the Will of God

Men who know of the approaching Festival of the Holy Dove should therefore already now be open to the lofty happening of the influx of the Power from the Divine into Creation, so that through them the Light may at last be permitted to take effect in the manner willed by God

The taking effect of the spiritual in man rests upon the mobility and the liveliness of intuitive perceiving
