The Human Spirit in the Reflection of the Divine Creative Power

From time immemorial many men have longed to become divine

Driven by this vision they endeavour forcibly to break through the boundary which spreads above them as an impenetrable vault given by their spiritual origin

Between the Divine and the spiritual there prevails a great difference

And man in this respect is and will forever remain spiritual

In spite of this, however, this or that man wishes to attain the heights lying above his kind, for in his comprehension of something higher he sees in it the possibility of a less limited degree for his volition

He therefore wishes to swing himself higher above his kind and thus to become one who influences from above the course of the things of the rest of the world

Openly or in secret he longs for whole worlds to be co-governed according to his own will

Some speak of it openly in enthusiasm and endeavour to persuade the others to occupy themselves with it too, because they are certain of the rightness of their wish that the divine state can be attained by the concentrated striving of their spirit towards this goal

Others keep it within themselves and long for such a thing only in secret, in the presumption that it could be a satisfaction in the fulfilment of that otherness which they feel within themselves

The wish to attain the divine is always closely connected with the maturity of the human spirit

In the tasting of all that free will contains within it, the spirit not yet wholly mature longs to master as much as is possible, and for this he needs to hold before himself the prospect of a possible divinity within him

He wishes to have the prospect of the possibility of his development upwards as high as possible, indeed he wishes to have it unlimited

He therefore supposes that to climb upwards even to the boundary of the divine is solely and only the work of his own awareness

He is certain that if he decides upon such a thing there are then no hindrances which would stop him from attaining his goal

The knowledge of free will tells him, after all, that it rests upon himself alone

He even supposes that he is called to this goal out of the divine heights themselves and supported in it

At least this presumption proceeds from the statements of those who as mystical masters spoke of it

He is convinced of it without knowing what the reality of the subsequent development was that awaited these mystics further on in the effects of the Laws of Creation

He can think of it in this way because he does not know that all these prospects of the divinity of man are only the reflections of all those who groped forward in the presumption that they had ripened enough to grasp the essence of the free will working in their spirit

And it is precisely that free will, wrongly recognised in the immaturity of the spirit, which incites many men to the arrogance of becoming one day the one who co-determines the development of all Life, standing thereby at its summit

He longs strongly to raise himself at last from the plane on which he is still only one who is led and brought up, to the plane of one who is himself leading, bringing up and determining

Of course this is skilfully veiled in words full of humility and renunciation which speak of a great love for the whole world

In this a likeness is sought with the way God does it, after all, and it is said that they only draw near to His greatness in humility

However pleasing this sounds outwardly, in the depth of the inner being there blazes that burning wish to attain the highest summit as the chief driving will of all the striving

This strong will is connected with the spiritual spark and with its gradual becoming aware of itself

It is a certain degree of maturity, or rather of immaturity, which fortunately passes many human spirits by entirely, but a part of them linger in it for long and become entangled

The developmental maturity of a spirit who walks purely and with childlike trust the ways of Subsequent Creation is touched by these reflections only lightly, often, however, not at all

In part, therefore, the coming of reflections upon how far the paths of the development of the spirit may lead is natural, and for a certain time such thinking may accompany man through his existence

Since it is in part the rebirth of the human soul out of its initial path of childlike feeling out of its own abilities onto a higher and wiser degree, it is in part understandable that men long to become divine, and therefore there are only few men to whom such questions have never come

In part it may for a certain time be natural, if we view it as a part of the degree of maturity of the given man

The majority, to their good fortune, soon recognise the natural limitation of the reach of their own will, and along with the inner acknowledging of this limitation of the human spirit they fit themselves back into the cycle of everyday happening, which offers them other experiences and other questions

With advancing maturity this volition falls away of itself, for in further knowledge it then appears to his spirit as something childish

Many a one is then ashamed of such folly and would gladly take back his earlier zealous reflections

Such men should then no longer be tormented by having their previous reflections in their spiritual development recalled to them

It should be forgotten in the same way as the most varied naive notions about the world are forgotten in the case of small children

If the spirit advances further in his maturity, then he is also perceived out of the Light already upon the new plane of his becoming luminous, and at the same time the past is gradually lived out and balanced, for instance merely by a state of earnest inner shame over his earlier talk

This degree of maturity in the recognising of the essence of the gifts of free will can in reality be overcome very easily

Nevertheless with a certain part of men there remains the burning question whether and how they can draw near to God with their consciousness and their comprehension

By becoming aware of its own I, the inner being of such fools wishes in the end to become divine, for they suppose that it is only a question of their development

Such a thing is a wrong understanding of the very essence of man

In the spirit there lies, from his very beginning, a natural limitation given by his origin

He awakened, after all, as a creature in a work which had already been made here by the Word of the Creator, and only subsequently did man arise out of this Word to his own consciousness

Thereby he lives and works in Creation, and without its space he cannot be self-aware

The Creator in His unsubstantiate nature, however, stands above all that is Created, and His Will works in wise loving-kindness towards all life

Thereby that which is spiritual in man differs fundamentally from the Divine

Let us consider once in the sequence of the happenings

God – the Creator created the work and laid into it with His all-embracing Will the enduringly and wisely working Laws of Creation

The human spirit arose out of these Laws of Creation only subsequently, he was born out of them and remains permanently their child

This, sadly, many a man does not admit to himself in his preoccupation with the wish for his ascent even to the divine

He wrestles with it and will not admit the defeat given in advance in a struggle which in reality is also only a struggle called forth by his own wrong wish

But here we are again at the essence of the matter

In much of the reflection of men upon the world and upon Creation there prevails today obscurity and confusion

The knowledge of his own consciousness and of the ability of his own free will therefore bears within it for man a multitude of unanswered questions

Thus it holds good that when man not seldom becomes aware of his own will in deciding, he wishes in his limited outlook to transfer it forcibly to an outward influence, so that things within the work of Creation may be governed according to his notions and wishes

Against the unlimited assertion of his will, however, there stand the powers of the Laws of Creation, which cast him down again and again, whether he wishes to circumvent them or crowds them out of his life

With his volition he always somehow strikes upon these Laws, and they then lead him along firm rails which he cannot cross

Therefore many a man then finds that he has not the power to climb above the effects of the Laws of Creation, which work upon him and which in many an hour intervene implacably in his life through the fulfilment of a will higher than his own

This then leads him to defiance, to irritability, or on the contrary to a loss of will, to dullness or even to the complete rejection of life

Only rarely does it lead to a purely experienced humility arising out of the knowledge of all that is really given him by the Creator to change and to form in accord with the primordially eternal Laws of the work of Creation

And yet in the human spirit there lie many lofty and precious abilities which could be shown him, so that in the right mastering of them he might learn the use of the gift of free will and thereby raise himself up to that degree of maturity upon which he can become a real co-former of life in certain parts of the work of Creation

How very much is given into the hands of the human spirit, of that almost no one among the earthly men is aware today

It is so because in general that will to rule is perceived wrongly by men

Distorted by notions of omnipotence, it became a false way, and therefore in the end a binding even of those abilities which lie in the human spirit necessarily had to be effected on the part of the animistic servants

And yet the human spirit could in a certain sense rule with his inner power over well-nigh all the degrees of life in Subsequent Creation

For Subsequent Creation his powers suffice, however much he is here permanently subordinate to the omnipresent Laws of Creation

Here, however, a space is set apart for his abilities in which he may bring his impulses to expression, that is, may bring them to life

Thanks to the abilities which were granted him as a spiritual inhabitant of the work of Creation, he can lay his will into the planes of the ethereal and of the world of thought

In this possibility of expressing his impulses and his volition there vibrates a real, however distant, reflection of the Divine, granted to the spirit as his equipment for a life of full value in Creation

With this gift he may forever be a participant in the development of whole parts of the work of Creation

He can draw joy and love for himself out of this forming, if he learns to use his will to a good and wise purpose

The lofty power which flows to him for such loving and wise co-forming will raise him ever more and more to the blissful state of devotion and of faithful service to the Light and to the Love of the Creator

The volition to be a master, glowed through by inner loving-kindness, will experience the highest happiness in the knowledge of the true content of “to serve”

To serve the Light means, in the highest degree of experiencing, “to be permitted also to rule over the powers which proceed from the possibilities of the given spiritual, or also animistic, kind in the work of Creation”

To rule over great abilities and powers which flow through the spirit by virtue of his capacity creatively to fit himself into the whole of the great harmony of the work of Creation is something that men can one day use quite consciously for the support of the development of whole parts of it

All this the human spiritual race bears within it, and it is to learn to stand in it rightly and purely with a conscious responsibility

But let us look about us at how these abilities are husbanded by us men, how they are used by us precisely here on Earth, which is given to man by the Creator as the place of spiritual learning in the use of free will

There where the pure power of the spiritual abilities could at once be applied by men to the forming and shaping of nothing but beautiful works, where a strengthening and lasting harmony could and should rule, everywhere there we find only desperate caricatures, worlds away from all wise forming and ruling

Man in his volition claws after becoming equal with God in the fulfilment of the wish to have an influence also upon the whole work of the universe, and yet we can look at the inglorious result of his ruling in the exercise of free will here upon this Earth alone

This Earth here is a gross material plane of existence which was from the beginning entrusted to the human race so that it might husband upon it and live according to its best conviction of what is right, and thereby be like a reflection of divine forming

Today we see how this formerly so blessed plain has long been destroyed by the brutality and the dullness of men who never asked after the true Will of the Creator

And yet for such a result only the very smallest part of the human abilities to rule over matter is used

In order for today's man to master matter he must intervene in it with equivalent instruments, that is, again only by the material ways of his intellect and of his hands, for he is unable to do it otherwise

He also intervenes in the finer planes of matter through his thinking and his intuitive perceiving

We can see it both in the outer world and in the world of thoughts and in the forms awakened by inner volition in the still finer parts of the ethereal planes

Everywhere there we find the result of human forming

We see the testimony of his creative ruling with these powers in the planes which were entrusted to him for this purpose, for the developmental part of his path, from the beginning by God the Father

The lamentable result of today's state testifies more than plainly how irresponsible a ruler and steward of life man is in this part of the worlds entrusted wholly into his hands

Let us but look about the plane of the kind of thought, where man is a real former of forms and of beings, for which the substance for the shaping was granted him by the Love of God the Father

That is in its result an accusing testimony of the state of the real direction of man

The forming and shaping of monstrosities, of basenesses and of ugliness is proof of how far man is from the understanding of his abilities and also of the responsibility arising out of these abilities

In all that now lives here on Earth and in the thought worlds of its surroundings, the lamentable attitude of man towards the gift of being permitted to shape and to form with his will is demonstrated

The result is the defiling and the ruining of all those parts which were handed to the human spirit at the beginning as virginally pure planes of the materialities, irradiated by the Light, which awaited the sowing of the seeds of his kindly volition

It is not even worthy of the designation of the work of a spiritual creature, let alone of a bearer of divine nature, such as so many men longing to become divine would gladly wish for themselves

Not seldom there is lacking in it even the smallest part of purity, of dignity and also of the genuine volition to bear within oneself the responsible awareness that thereby, as men, we share in the co-shaping of the harmony of the whole

Only here and there does something a little purer and beneficent vibrate in these planes of thought, which still bears within it a partial promise of blessing

For the most part, however, this creative world of human volition testifies plainly to the inability to master one's own wishes and appetites

It is far remote from the true wisdom of the human inner being, which always expresses itself through the pure forms of all kinds of virtues

Let us therefore reflect here once more from a somewhat different point of view

All this testifies to the impossibility of the human spiritual kind having anything closely homogeneous with the divine, precisely already in that we speak of the development and of the maturity of the human kind

The Divine, however, is divine and has no need to develop

The human spirit, however, needs to develop, and in this development he not seldom strays from the path and becomes, to the harm of himself and of all the other life near him, stunted in his intuitive perceiving of the good and of the light

Such a thing is excluded in the Divine, for the divine is the starting-point of all Goodness and Light

The Divine is the source of the Light by its original nature as the Divine

The Creator is the Creator because everything that unfolds out of His Will is complete in Him from the primordial beginning

In this there prevails between the Divine and the spiritual an insuperable difference

The Divine is the giver of Truth and of Life, whereas the spiritual needs this Truth and Life about it so that it may only then develop in its spiritual gifts and abilities

The spiritual therefore changes and develops in its knowledge of the Truth about Life towards a higher understanding of itself and of its task in Creation

And precisely everything formed by men today speaks plainly of their inability hitherto to recognise the Truth and Life rightly and to stand in accord with them clearly and firmly upon the plane of spiritual nobility of character and high birth, which belongs inseparably to the human spiritual kind

Here too this calls forth in an earnest observer a contradiction which is very hard to overcome

What is there to be found in the working of men on Earth hitherto, over whole millennia, as a ground for the confirmation of a growing maturity

For many men are themselves afraid of their own creations, whether material or of thought, they have a fear of them and will not acknowledge them as their own

A spirit who himself fears his own work, as is the case with the forms of thought and also with the Furies and Harpies born out of the intuitive volition of evil, is a weakling and not the bearer of a promise of divine self-awareness

Let us take the concept of fear just mentioned

Fear prevails among men everywhere that there is anxiety about what is coming

It makes no difference whether it is in the near present or still in the distant future

Out of that which is to come there grows in man fear and anxiety

There is therefore a fear of the future development, which is unknown to the human spirit

In foreboding, the coming of the bad, the painful, the worse and the evil is expected

Instead of the trust in Goodness and in Light that grows out of the purity of the inner being, men form shapes of fear which in return rob them of a great part of their so precious powers

Everywhere that a fear of the coming development prevails there is proof of a complete ignorance of the course of the work of Creation

Whoever does not know the work of Creation and the Laws working in it cannot shape with his creative power the right and blessed forms of life around him

He has no inkling that faith in Goodness, together with courage, wisdom and the indispensable purity, always brings only victory

Where victory is expected, there shapes of fear which turn back to attack their own formers can never arise

But faith in victory can be had only by him who knows the Laws of Creation and who in his inner being strives for pure and honourable conduct without regard to the outer world

This lawfulness, however, men do not know, they therefore have no trust in it, and for that reason they are anxious about what is to come

Thereby man proves that he is neither one who rules nor one who rightly subordinates himself to the Laws of Creation, for he does not know these Laws and does not trust their working

He remains one who gropes, and he is like a creature lost in a deep jungle full of unknown shadows and sounds

And yet in the human spirit there permanently slumbers the capacity to recognise all of this

He can become one who knows the work of Creation and all the natural Lawfulnesses working in it, if only he wills it

Thereby all fear and all anxiety about every future happening would fall away from him

Creation with its planes and worlds would become for him a friendly place filled with the presence of the divine pulse of Goodness and Light, and thus a source of omnipresent help

His widened knowledge would lead him ever more to places of higher outlook and to heights illumined by the Light, from which he could swiftly behold that nothing is accidental and that everything is subject to the perfect course of the wise Laws of Creation

He would also recognise that he himself as a human spirit is endowed with a power which enables him to form bold works, if only he listens and is governed by the rules of the great harmony which the real Divinity of the Creator laid into the work of Creation, He who in His inconceivable wisdom and love stood at the beginning of all life

Thereby he could gradually become a co-former who in a continually growing wisdom breathes life into those parts of the worlds which were entrusted to him here in Subsequent Creation as the bearer of a spark distantly split off from the Divine power

He could become one beneath whose hands there germinates and grows a life filled with beauty and with joy

He could be a bearer of the knowledge of the Truth instead of a spreader of the fear that comes of ignorance

And the world in his nearness would come alive, it would arise at once in a new strengthening from the touch of the fervent volition of the spiritual spark

All the servants of God in Subsequent Creation, to whom belongs precisely all the animistic of Valhalla and also the pure spiritual beings out of Primordial Creation who bend down towards the materialities, all of them would draw near to man in order to support him in his at last clear and wise striving to use his abilities for the co-shaping of the worlds of Subsequent Creation

Mankind today also needs urgently to attain such a development, for otherwise there

threatens it destruction together with all that it has hitherto, in its blasphemous frivolity,

in the presumption of its own greatness and exclusiveness above the rest of life in Creation, brought about

Hitherto it was only a groping in the unconscious exercise of all that is lower which led man and drove him forward through life

But this now needs to be raised and, in an awakening out of true knowledge, lifted to a degree worthy of the forming of an enlightened human spirit

Scorched will be the wild thickets of erring evil and of the base craving for an unwarranted ruling without a responsibility fully and consciously accepted beforehand

Torn down will be the dominion of the mistaken forms which proceeded from man and which deceitfully placed him at such a height of Creation as he never belonged to and never will belong to

All this is now given over into the hands of the High animistic servants, so that it may be swept into the depths of damnation

And during this purifying happening in the worlds around the Earth man needs meanwhile to attain that awakening through enlightenment, so that the opportunity to become the former of a new world of thought may be granted him once again at all

Of that world which is the real field of forming, upon which there shows itself the reflection of the distant particle of power split off from the Divine nature which the human spirit bears within him

It is not, however, the Divine itself, but only a many times distant reflection which slumbers in the spiritual nature of man

And it is precisely with this power that he can lay his will into the world of thought, so that here at last for the first time he may form with full responsibility only all that benefits the whole, for in that there vibrates his own accord with the great harmony which passes through the entire work of Creation

In this man is a real ruler and a king or a queen

Nevertheless he always bears inseparably his share of the co-responsibility for all that his creative power shapes out of the substance graciously lent to him for it

He can and should be the steward of the worlds around him

But a steward fully conscious and responsible, who takes care that the power of his volition shapes only good and a kindly strengthening for all the creatures around him

He will also be able to release himself from this his own work only if the work bears witness to his nobility of character and to the conscious stewardship of the powers entrusted to him in the materialities

Then also the abilities hitherto bound will be released, and man will be enabled, in co-operation with the animistic servants, to move with greater ease the very matter of the gross material kind

Hitherto this was not made possible for him, for he would swiftly have brought it all to catastrophe and destruction

Therefore the keys to the powers have not until now been given him, which at the same time bear within them the possibility of using energies as yet unknown, carefully stored by the animistic servants in every single particle of the material kind

So many powers are stored here in the form of radiation and of waves, which can be fully used for the transformation of matter on a scale hitherto unseen

The adding and the dividing of these kinds of waves makes it possible for a mobility to slip into materiality even of the grossest kind, which will make it possible for matter to be transformed into new shapes according to the volition of the governing will

Powers too can then be released out of matter in another way than is now known

But this is possible only under the condition that a predominating degree of wisdom will prevail on Earth among the majority of the men sojourning here

And to such wisdom it is needful first to work one's way through one's own maturity of spirit, who keeps himself permanently in mobility and liveliness through his intuitive perceiving

Spiritual maturity leads to perfection

And only this ripe perfection of the human spiritual flame in man enables him to exercise a certain particle of the divine creative power dwelling in his innermost spark

Whoever wishes to draw near to God will always strive to become truly mature and thereby perfect in those abilities which were given him by his origin

He can and should begin with this already now upon this Earth

True perfection in the spiritual sense, however, awaits him only at the entrance into the blissful gardens of the spiritual home, in the Luminous planes of Primordial Creation

Only there, in experiencing, will he grasp much of that which here on Earth remains for him only a shadow of knowledge

He will know himself wholly in his spiritual splendour, and he will also know the joyfully glorifying reverence of his Creator, the Holy God and Lord
