Of the grave happening which took place in the halls of Valhalla many of the created in the luminous planes knew nothing for a very long time

Only a part of the primordially created knighthood in the Grail knew all that had taken place, and it was they also who at once sent forth a fervent entreaty to God the Father for help

No one yet divined it exactly, but in the halls of the Grail, where the faithful guards stood, there streamed in waves the pictures of a development which no one had known before

These waves bore within themselves a hitherto unknown vibration which could be called "struggle"

But all was yet distant, and the spheres of the Light were still filled with bliss and with grace

The Light-bearer remained deep in the misty vapours of the Subsequent work of Creation, and no one knew what occupied him

Still there ascended upwards the sparks of the developed ones awakened by the earlier working of the Light-bearer, and in the ethereal spheres they were permitted to reach places almost within sight of the steps rising to the radiant gate into the home of the Blue Island of the blissful, ripe spirits

Everything still appeared as blessed, and no one in the luminous planes divined how greatly the further development would change

Then suddenly, out of the lowlands of the nebulae, there rose a ray which bore within itself the formed volition of the Light-bearer

It ascended through the spheres and bore within itself a strange flicker of a call to service

Many of the created greeted this ray joyfully, for never before had they had experience of guile and of falsity

They rejoiced in this ray, for in it they perceived the confirmation that all was being fulfilled in complete accord with the Will of the Creator

Many in the spheres of the spiritual Creation rejoiced at this and made themselves ready, that when the ray of Lucifer should return back into the Subsequent Creation filled with blessing Light, they would join themselves to it and would follow it in a great helping working

Now, however, the ray ascended ever more and more upwards, passing through the planes, and lastingly it summoned all the inhabitants there to unite themselves with it

A strange fine mist strode in its tracks, and there where spirits drew near to the radiance of the ray it enveloped them, and they hearkened to the sounding which was borne along with it

In this sounding there was contained the word "service"

This word repeated itself ever anew, and everywhere through the space in quiet repetition there sounded "service … service … service …"

Its radiation was intoxicating and enticed to a drawing near and to a joining with this message issuing out of the work of the Subsequent Creation

The ray ascended ever higher and higher

At last it reached even the highest parts of Creation, where it passed through the primordially created planes

The only place to which it did not draw near in the planes flooded with Light was the radiant and mighty castle of the Grail itself

In its enticement it waited to see whether it might succeed in altering the opinion of the inhabitants there

Its intent, which was the real aim of why it had ascended as far as hither, into these planes filled with Light, was, however, for many strong primordially created ones ever more perceptible, for it had slumbered in the ray from the very beginning of its deviation in the depths of the materialities

The knights in the Grail knew of this happening beforehand, for more had been imparted to them by the archangel Michael than the other inhabitants of Creation were permitted to receive

The archangel Michael, surrounded by blinding Light, who had been appointed by the Creator to the protection of the young king's son in the halls of the Grail of this Creation, warned the knighthood of the approaching drawing near of the volition of Lucifer

For the time being, however, the volition of the strong, Divinely animistic servant Lucifer, gathered together in the ray, circled through the planes and in its calling still worked in part attractively upon many

Behind its shining brightness of a blinding kind it was, however, possible ever more clearly to observe a pallor and an emptiness which removed itself from all that is pure in Creation

Whoever remained in connection with the powers streaming in the Grail, whence in a ruby-golden gleam there poured forth the life-giving Power of God the Father, he recognised that that calling was only an alluring, enticing to a joining with the volition of him who had exalted himself

In the brightness and the radiance it was possible to behold through the ray a picture which bore within itself a strange serpent-like form

Then of a sudden, uncovered by the gazes of the faithful knights, this likeness of a serpent coiled itself in its circling and darted in the direction of the luminous youth who was in the castle of the Grail

Against this volition which drove the ray forward there was, however, already set a dam of the knighthood in shining armour

The ray – the serpent halted before them and whispered

"Service … service is the highest that ye can bestow for the life in Creation"

"Serve, serve me, for I know Creation better than the youth"

"Even as He, I too come out of the Divine, yet I in my mission know the Laws of Creation even to their most distant spheres"

"I know this work of Creation completely, He does not"

"I am the Divine which was chosen for this Creation"

"I shall mediate to you more Light than He Whom ye have in your midst, if ye will serve me and open to me the halls of the Grail"

"Never yet have ye known the power which I shall bring to you from God's throne"

With the hissing of a quiet temptation this sounded through the space, and the ray thereby circled around the ranks of those faithful to Parzival

The ranks trembled, but not a single one of the knights gave way or yielded to the allurement of the voice

Then in answer to the whispered words there rang out a resounding cry:

"I, I Am!"

"I am He Who Am!"

Like a ringing voice of hope the great cry of the youth sounded, and all recognised that in His voice was God the Father Himself

By the sounding of the words there was at one stroke blown away the creeping oppression which had intruded upon all in the whispering of the ray of Lucifer,

Self-will and false arrogance in Creation was broken

All the servants faithful to the Light were strengthened

The ray of the Light-bearer trembled, and it seemed that, shaken by the words which long died away as an echo through the whole space, it would at last give way and draw itself back

Suddenly, however, the serpent darted forward and wound itself about the feet of those knights who appeared to it as the weakest links of the firm rank

It tore the knights from the courtyard and through the gap darted after the youth, Who was in the highest hall of the Grail, irradiated with Light

Here, praying, He dwelt in trust in the protection from His Father

The ranks of the knights pursued the ray, and again the faithful closed together for the protection of their young steward of the Grail

The four strongest protectors of the Grail set themselves in the entrance gates of the hall, ready to hold back the scaly serpent into which the ray that had emerged out of the depths had now completely changed itself

Mighty powers clashed in their radiating through the halls of the Grail, and this clash shook the walls of the mighty building

A roaring and a wailing was borne down into the depths like the echo of the struggle

With their power the four strongest halted the serpent for a short while and thereby made it possible that the Primordial Queen Elisabeth, who had hastened thither, might be permitted to lift the radiant youth upwards into the Divine part of the Grail, into the protection of the eternal ones, into places beyond the reach of the serpent

In that moment there rang through the heavens "Enough, thus far and no further!"

Immediately thereafter there appeared out of the blinding Light a form of most glorious knightly appearance

The archangel Michael, who had been sent forth by God the Father to the protection of the youth of the Grail, descended to the halls of the castle, borne by his mighty pinions, in order with the power bestowed by God to intervene in help of the primordially created knights, who otherwise could not have withstood the ray, which was still equipped against them with the spark of the Divinely animistic nature of its kind

There was the threat that the serpent which had developed out of the ray, if it could not strike the youth, would attack the sacred vessel of the Grail, in order to deflect it and thereby to cripple the influx of powers coming through it into the work of Creation

With a sure stroke the radiant archangel, standing already upon the ramparts of the Grail, struck the serpent with his shining sword, and this one, crippled, fell down into the depths

Struck down by the blow of the stronger, falling through the planes, it wound itself about those who were not firm and tore them down with it, or at the least shook them, in order to make them uncertain in their hitherto service

Thus it influenced also a part of the spirits in Creation, who yielded to its whispering and, under the impression of the allurement and of the entwining promises about their greatness, let themselves be drawn down

Several luminous places in Creation were touched, and for some time the deflection which had arisen had to return back into the original balance

At last, however, the ray could not hold itself in the Primordial Creation and, writhing in fury, already in wholly open enmity towards the Light, it plunged into the depth of the work of the Subsequent Creation, where there closed again above it the nebula of the divination of an ill-boding further development

In the halls of the Grail, under the influx of God's strengthening which the sent-forth protector, the archangel of Divine origin, mediated, everything at once settled itself, and no one remained deflected

In the renewal of the powers which again flowed in radiant blessing, peace returned, and an all-permeating harmony poured itself together with the influx of Light out of the Grail into all the places which before had been touched by the ray of the fallen archangel

The other spheres of Creation also swiftly healed the places where, under the effect of the ray of the fallen one, a deflection had come about for a short time

All was renewed or replaced, and the regular pulse again passed from above downwards, as ever before

Jubilantly there was borne through the spheres the tiding of the return of the youth Parzival out of the Divine part of the castle of the Grail back into the highest halls in the spiritual annexe of the Grail

The Primordial Queen Elisabeth remained with Him in this part for some time, before she returned again back into her home in the Divine plane

All the inhabitants of Creation let rise up in their extolling prayers the confirmation of the vow of faithfulness to the King of the Grail and to His Holy Father

A blissful pulse trembled peacefully, calmly through all beings and through all things

Nevertheless in many places there remained a strange imprint of that which had been experienced, and it bore within itself forever a reminder of a new knowing for all the inhabitants of the work of Creation, who carried the gained experience as a new dimension of their wisdom

In many there remained this gained recognition of an adversity and a falsity until then unknown to them, as an imprint which will never more be effaced and which will ever be helping for all working in the planes of the Subsequent Creation, where there lastingly dwells a certain degree of lukewarmness out of the nature of the more difficult penetration of the direct Light

Through this experiencing, expected by none of the inhabitants of Creation, the work of the Creator was permitted to receive a ripening as a whole, in its eternal duration

Forever there will now remain here the recognition that the Light can be endangered if watchfulness and purity do not form a harmony together with ripeness, with deep wisdom and with the bright sharpness of discerning all that is false

A new vibration of faithfulness descended through the spheres and brought to the blissful devotion to the Light the addition of the watchfulness that had been gained

It filled with overflowing joy the hearts of all who had stood firm in that which was experienced and who had endured unshaken at their places of service

At the same time many promises were borne out of the heights of the Light, and hosts of the faithful offered themselves for service in help towards their fulfilment

The luminous servants waited in all the planes until the time should come for them to join themselves to the Son of Man, Who, having been announced, was to pass through the work of Creation, in order with His presence to heal all the wounds made after the passage of the ray of the fallen archangel

Exalted great expectations filled all the planes, and joyful service was a part of all the preparations for the new happening which was again to move forward the great gearwork of the whole work of Creation
