For centuries already mankind has been searching in the ancient history of this earth
It seeks back in the past for grains of hope-filled knowledge showing the way to a better life in this world
Many people seek for themselves in the history of mankind, and also in the times of the origin and the forming of the planet, something valuable which could help them to make clear their further direction for the present
Also here and there, along with this, some more sensitive people seek something about God as the Creator, acknowledged by them, of the material universe here
They seek the meaning which should lie in it all and which should surely give the answer why the universe and this earth came into being
There are also lacking answers as to where the Wisdom of God is to be found in this imperfect world of men, if this world is for the Creator the important centre of what He has formed, as it is set forth by the religious leaders
Many are still the questions hovering over mankind, to which, however, the answers are lacking
Mankind lacks very much of that which should already today be spoken of with seriousness in all the significant places of the society here
An inward intimation warningly suggests that of the time allotted for the finding of the answers there is ever less
As the existing earthly world shakes in its foundations, which hitherto still hold at least in part, there is today searching and investigating with a still more feverish tenacity on all fronts
Yet in spite of this tenacity no clearer knowledge has for a long time been reached which would bring the calming that is the proof of a successful gaining of knowledge
It is well intuitively perceived by men that true and complete knowledge, as one of the manifestations of its genuineness, mediates to man, together with refreshing joy, calm and the fullness of peace within
Where therefore there is among people no peacefulness and no fullness of peace, there is no genuine knowledge of the Truth and of the Creator
Nor is there in such a place the knowledge of His Wise Will, which is decisive for all Life in the work of Creation
In the case of the humanly spiritual kind we may even take it as a lawful happening, holding good always, that one of the visible signs of the holding of true, more complete knowledge about God is in the first place precisely the matter-of-fact fullness of peace manifested towards all other creatures
Nothing of the kind, however, shows itself today among men as a prevailing trait
On the contrary, it is possible to observe in ever more places a growing chaos, embitterment, anger and hatred
Also despair and hopelessness
That this is now so, and that it is an ever more visible phenomenon of the present, testifies only to the lasting evil state of the world of men
This state, however, is here only and solely because all the forces in the investigations hitherto are fixed upon far too small a point – upon matter and upon everything bound up with matter
The forces destined for research are cast only upon the exploring of the history which took place within the narrow boundaries of the earthly world
Thereby is set in advance for any research a boundary within whose frame the complete original knowledge can never be traced, and thereby neither the enlightenment able to refresh the spiritual inner being of man
Nevertheless people, stuck fast within the boundaries of the material universe, strive after all this in the foolish belief that through the exploring of the material world here some higher knowledge can be attained
Out of this striving there arose already in past centuries earthly science, working dissectingly at the knowledge of all the great and small history of mankind, but also striving after deeper knowledge in penetrating into the mysteries of matter
Science was born unobtrusively as at first only the timid assembling and recording of the findings of scholars about matter and its laws
It developed through the comparing of these records and their continual supplementing
Nourished by the zealous participation of intellectuality, which perceived therein its opportunity to assert itself, it developed and advanced ever more ingeniously, until today almost all human thinking is subordinated only to the manner of scientific research and investigation
Everything, however, which is investigated by men through science is narrowly bound to this small planet and to the universe surrounding it
Thereby is determined in advance the result, which must lead to failure in the endeavours to know by scientific ways something higher, and thereby of another kind, than matter
Many researchers devote a great part of their life to this small planet earth, however much it is in reality, in relation to the great work of Creation, only an insignificant particle of the whole
Again and again scientists of all fields plunge into the endless exploring of material matter, of that matter which is in reality only the place of the temporary sojourn of the human spirit in earthly life
It is only a small part formed by animistic hands for the possibility of living in the gross material universe, as against the wholeness of the existence of the spiritual inner being, to which the work of Creation affords incomparably greater planes and worlds, and above all also the possibility of eternal duration
The human spirit, being of another kind in its nature, reaches beyond this gross material world, with which it is bound only through the bridge of the connecting threads of radiation to the earthly body
The earthly body by its material origin predetermines the temporariness of this connecting radiation
When this radiation is severed, the spiritual inner being continues onwards already independently of the discarded body
Everything on this earth may be called temporary, but the Primordial work of Creation, in the other kind of the higher spiritual planes, is lasting
Yes, it is self-evident that this earth also and the life upon it have gone forth from the workshop of the High animistic forming, which, in the fulfilling of the command of the Light, shaped the world of the materialities and offers hosts of numberless beauty with a harmony fitting perfectly into itself
There is therefore also here on earth much beauty, and thereby opportunity to experience a certain delight, or even an intoxication, through it
Yet it is nevertheless only the enjoying of a small part out of the great existence in the planes which are afforded to the spirit within the work of Creation
In the history of this earth, be it in the development of mankind itself or in the history of the development of nature, there cannot be found that which is so often sought in it all and which researchers wish to designate as enlightened knowledge of the beginning of the universe and knowledge of the meaning of its arising
For such knowledge there holds the condition that people need to occupy themselves not with the history of the earth, but with something far more extensive, greater – with the history of the work of Creation
That, however, necessarily means to seek higher, above matter
It means to direct one's attention in an entirely different direction than has been the case hitherto
To loosen oneself from the small world of men here and to look upwards to the true Starting-point, which is to be found above the materialities
Into the planes above matter, however, the human intellect cannot penetrate, and therefore neither can any investigating science, but only the spiritual substance dwelling in man may enter there
Only this inner substance of man can, through inner experiencing, come to know the greatness of the whole of the work of Creation, and out of this greatness also grasp the real dignity of the Light and the Holiness of God
To anything of the kind, however, people do not devote themselves, so as to let their inner being rise upwards in inner openness
Therefore on earth only very little, or rather nothing at all, is known about the work of Creation
Everything is lacking here for the spirit to be really healthy and strong
And only an inwardly healthy and mobile spirit, in its perceiving of noble intuitions, bears within it the capacity to soar higher to the planes in which far more is known about the history of the work of Creation than here on earth
Let us look upon a picture:
The human soul, which one day, in the moment of laying aside the covering of the body, must with certainty leave this earthly world, gradually comes to know, if it bears within itself sufficient purity and also a certain simple childlikeness, that the further path opening before it, even into immeasurable heights, appears such that these have no end in sight
Everything seems to it mighty and great
Never in the time of earthly life could it even so much as picture anything of the kind to itself, for in the earthly world there were no thought-forms for it
The distant Light of the golden glowing Life radiates high above it
In the dignified splendour which streams forth from it, it appears forever unattainable for any of the inhabitants of Creation
It is the Light radiating from the Grail at the summit of Creation, the starting-point realised by God for all life in Creation
The soul experiences that greatness of primordially eternal power which it never before experienced in earthly existence in connection with the name God
It seems to itself suddenly as nothing in relation to how mighty is that place which is for it the intimated beginning of all Life
It intuitively perceives a distance which is not possible for it to describe otherwise than as an abysmally eternal remoteness between the Starting-point of the Living Light and itself there where it just now finds itself
Nevertheless there descends to it from these heights ever more strongly the promise of help and of strengthening
It sounds like ever more fervent tones speaking to the inner being of each single soul, of each single creature
As the soul ascends, it comes to know an ever greater beauty which compels it to blissful rejoicing over it all
On the way there accompany it many guides, who in every moment show their most genuine endeavour in the care for its spiritual inner being as it becomes luminous
This new world is entirely different from what it was in the time on earth, which appears in looking back as a place of coldness and estrangement as against the regions now shone through with light which surround the soul
It all appears also as a distant past, which the soul would gladly have quite forgotten already, for it is surrounded by so much that is new and which holds a lastingly refreshing inflow of knowledge about the Light, about the Love of God
At the same time it intuitively perceives within itself how, amid all this splendour, it is still far from the starting-point of the aforesaid Love of God, and how little it knows of it all
Shame passes through it before all that which clearly suggests to it how very far behind it is as against those who accompany it here with kindly wisdom
And perhaps for that reason there comes to the soul in some moment a stirring holding within it the question:
Why did it know nothing of all this in the time when it was permitted to dwell in a body on earth
Why did no one tell it anything nearer about it
Why, in all that which it considered important in its earthly life, was there not mentioned even in part that which is for it in the present moment the most valuable experiencing of real happiness
Beside it there sounds the voice of one of the friends, of those who accompany it:
„That is because on earth the incarnated souls follow only that which is formed in the insignificant world of thought-forms, which are grievously narrowed down to everything material
That which is perceived and experienced by men on earth is drawn from the ballast of thoughts formed over a long time, which surrounds the earth
People take over everything which is part of this covering of thoughts surrounding the earth, and most of them have not the strength to penetrate through it further into the space which is entirely different from how it appears to earthly human thinking
The thought-covering of the earth has become in the millennia of the human world for most people a constricting cage, formed by the prevailing baseness of interests of a purely material kind
Out of these thoughts are formed the interests, wishes and conceptions of the majority of those who follow them, without striving themselves to free themselves from their constricting baseness
The thoughts do indeed slowly change over the centuries, yet for the greatest part they remain always aimed only at the material interests narrowly bound up with human life in the earthly body
Although there is a certain movement in the thought-currents, there is here no development towards a better life illumined with a clearer light
The world of men thus forms on earth, under the Law of movement, a history which outwardly appears indeed as development and progress, but which in reality is only a turning in a wheel, without prospect of real ascent
Mankind only repeats again and again the same circles of experiencing
The few years of peace and of building up among men are always replaced sooner or later by a time of envy, hatred and wars
The time of better striving is in the end always destroyed by baseness arising from the impulse of material possession and the ruling over other people bound up with it
The forms change, but the real knowledge of the meaning of it all is always the same, that is, none
All this happens because there is lacking the strong and fervent will to change the direction which has been formed predominantly by the material striving of generations long past and likewise also by the people living in the present
As long as the human spirit does not, in the awakening of its capacities for noble intuitive perceiving, raise itself higher above matter, it will never free itself from this destroying cycle and will have to be destroyed like an over-ripe fruit“
The listening soul trembles, because it becomes aware that it too on earth strove in most of its conceptions and wishes predominantly only after things narrowly bound up with material survival in the body
How little there was of that which sounded forth as the stirring of something higher, which sought the meaning in all that stumbling haste cutting away from the preciousness of the earthly days bestowed upon it
The soul becomes aware how foolish its question is
For indeed it too was no different, it too did not occupy itself, together with its earthly fellow men, with the most natural questions concerning what the true mission of man is and how to draw nearer to the fulfilling of this mission
In all its hurrying striving, devoted to the daily cares and joys, it did not occupy itself either with what was before and what will come further after earthly life
In the moments which in its own opinion it considered exceptional and valuable, it studied the history of mankind, and this only so as to be able afterwards to dispute with those near to it over which age was better or worse
Although it sensed that all this acted as a barren wasting of time without the kernel of real knowledge, it seemed to it at that time as something valuable when in the judging of the past it could give expression to its own view
It was likewise also when it could express itself with dissatisfaction about the present or estimate all that would come as the future on earth
It was convinced that all who visibly determine the direction of life on earth do it worse than it ought to be done, without reflecting upon how it should in reality be
Of anything of the kind it did not think, although it considered itself educated and standing above many who appeared to it as a lukewarm human multitude
Out of its earthly education it did not understand their low needs and considered itself as standing above small wishes for a simple survival in life
It proceeded from the assumption that all who appear as wise and educated, and thereby as valuable earthmen, do it so
It had no inkling that in the result it too is just as lost as the other multitudes, lost solely in everything material which is immediately bound up with earthly life
It was indeed cleverer in this and fared better, but in reality all its thinking was also narrowly limited only to the best possible providing for itself in matter
Now it perceives how empty and void of content was that wasting of time which should have been fully used for the knowing of precisely that which reaches beyond earthly life, which in the end came to a close for it just as with all other people in a fear-filled expectation of what would come afterwards
How small, how insignificant it now appears to it, when it may perceive how all this in reality stood entirely aside from all the real happenings which meanwhile unfolded in joyful creative activity in all the planes of the work of Creation shone through with light
By how many steps of knowledge it could have been further, had it already known at that time how, through pure spiritual harmony with the work of Creation, it may await with confidence all that must come, provided the inner being of man is pure and filled with the will to good
It could surely have known long ago that Creation has a path made ready for it, which with kindly certainty leads its steps in the way corresponding to the disposition of its spiritual inner being
It could even have looked forward to how in a beneficial inflow the knowledge of the history of Creation would come to it ever more, for which longing overflows its inner being, although at the given moment it does not yet know even the smallest thousandth part of that which may be called knowledge
It could already on earth have experienced at least in part the stirrings of the splendour which streams through the whole work of Creation
All this it could have done, if it had longed strongly for it with its inner being
The great wisdom working in Creation would have led it already on earth to the knowledge of that which alone can satisfy the urging of the inner being calling for something higher
In the pure attunement of the inner being to accord with harmony it would have been permitted with its inner being to free itself from the cycle, repeated by men, of the fulfilling of activities proportionate to the passing days, months and years
It would already have been able on earth to live fully with its spiritual inner being, and every day would have been for it, in connection with the knowledge of the work of Creation, a thousand times more valuable than it was
A great sorrow spread within the inner being of the trembling soul
But then, strengthened by the longing to make up for all it had missed, it took heart and set forth upon the path which led it to further valuable experiences…
That is a picture of the gradual awakening of one soul, which after its earthly end came into the world of the finer spheres, which are yet still only in the planes of fine matter in the Subsequent work of Creation
And so it is with most human souls, which from the standpoint of the Light we may call at least still so far pure that it is gradually made possible for them to ascend to the brighter places in the ethereal planes
The awakening of these souls is always accompanied by astonishment and also by growing happiness, when the newcomer from the earthly world receives gradual knowledge about the work of Creation
So it has been happening already for whole millennia, and it is only proof that the souls incarnating on earth for the sake of certain experiences which make progress possible for them, alas at the same time with the incarnation on earth lose all connection with the knowledge of whence they came and what the real meaning of their earthly life is
On earth there is still always formed in the thought-world a world of an earthly kind, torn away from all else, in which nothing has a place that is not connected with the material interests and endeavours of the majority of mankind, of that majority which at the same time considers this earth to be the centre of all its existence
Even the conceptions of God and of the spiritual paradise prepared by Him for man were dragged down by the believers in the Creator into a purely material understanding and produced many caricatures in which hosts of otherwise good-natured human spirits are drowning
Everything in the thought-attunement is directed only to one point – to this earth, into which people strive in their conceptions to cram everything they were permitted to know about God
Thereby, however, the whole forming of thoughts must necessarily be wrongly directed, because the exalted concepts of the happenings in the divine work of Creation belong to other planes than to the small material world of men
The right direction therefore needs at last to be set in this
That brings responsibility for all those who were permitted to come to true knowledge of the work of Creation
People who have this knowledge are to be the bearers of the torch of enlightenment, in which alone lies the way out for all from the confusion and hopelessness hitherto
Enlightenment bearing within it the great knowledge of how much greater in reality the work of Creation is as a whole, which is to become in the thought-attunement that which surpasses everything hitherto
It is to become the strongest shining of an all-clarifying knowledge, like a foundation soil out of which there can then blossom forth only beneficial fruits of a peace-filled ascent for the individual man and for the whole of mankind
With seriousness there is therefore to be spoken of the great history of the work of Creation, so that there may step forth more outwardly that pettiness of all the still enduring discords and wars of the mankind torn away from Creation on this earth
He who has true knowledge of God and of His work of Creation is to ask himself continually:
„What is this earth with its gifts, and what is man with his earthly riches in relation to the work of Creation, if accord with the harmony of the whole of the divine Work is not maintained here“
It is nothing
Although many an earthman deems himself great and important, his true worth from the standpoint of the Light lies solely in how he lives in the vibration of his inner being in an attunement willing the good, which is in full accord with the whole of the work of Creation already here on this earth
But how many such people are there today on earth
To live in accord with the whole of the work of Creation means to grasp and to experience the work of Creation as one all-embracing great Work of God, which has no gaps and which is lastingly and consciously lived in the inner being of man in every moment of existence already here on earth
Precisely for every spirit endowed with the Truth it is a work which is to become the most living activity in the daily thinking of him who is enlightened
He is to help to spread enlightenment through his blessed thoughts and deeds
Only in approaching everything in the conscious knowledge of the work of Creation as a whole does the participation of those people become meaningful in the present life on earth, of those who have their knowledge of the work of Creation built out of living Truth
And this perceiving and experiencing of a lasting conscious grasp of the wholeness of the work of Creation leads the spirit to a living participation in the building up of an entire new structure of thought, which can bring strengthening and the fullness of peace to all who seek the meaning of their existence
This building up of the new thought-world is the way to the attaining of the transformation which lies in the great widening of the hitherto narrow boundaries of human reflection
In these widened boundaries there is then to be found a living harmony of earthly men with the whole work of Creation in one single voice
That will in the end bring, as a natural part of the human world, also the knowledge of the great history of the work of Creation
Only then, together with the humility of men, will there also dawn the time of peace and of the mutual helping of all on the way upwards, to the Light
