The Furies and Harpies

Various questions arise in readers whenever the concept of the Furies appears

This means that there is an obscurity about it, and obscurity can often lead to erroneous conclusions

The Furies – they are formations which bear about themselves both a certain mystery and also a certain measure of horror and of dread

Many will also know them under the designation of Harpies, with which the Furies are identical, the difference lying only in the naming

If therefore we speak here of the Furies, then everything holds entirely the same for those who rather associate these qualities with the Harpies

In their origin the Furies – the Harpies may be likened to creatures which are, so to speak, living and lifeless at the same time

The Furies are not alive, but they are only formations quickened by the intuitive volition of man

It is similar as with viruses, which need a host, for otherwise they cannot survive and multiply, with this difference, that the small attacking particles of life such as viruses, bacteria and others are under the administration of the High animistic servants such as Haerthemis, Hareiars and other animistic ones subordinate to them, who release them when they are driven to it by the necessity of upholding the law of movement, or when O-dio-nar himself directly summons them to it upon higher command

To the Furies men themselves give a part of their spiritual power, if their attunement is of the homogeneous kind in which the Furies work

Men ought to reflect upon this but a little

They are therefore not beings having within themselves directly a spiritual or an animistic core, but they are creatures which have become living through the strong intuitive vibrations of the spiritual volition of men, and thereby they have a spark of life-power from the side of men

Their predatory heart arose to life at the prompting of men in the volition towards unlovely things, in the many kinds of burning, ill-wishing thoughts, such as we all know them

They are therefore creations which arose out of the strong, evil inner volition of the human spirit

A certain spiritual power which streams forth from man into the world of thoughts has fastened itself upon the gathering-places in which we may find thought-forms of various kinds, which in the case of the Furies belong precisely to the unlovely thoughts that are spurred and nourished not only by the energy of thought, but also by intuitive spiritual power bearing within itself in that moment something negative, destroying

Thought-forms strongly nourished from the side of men in this negative, ill-wishing attunement always after a time gain for themselves so much strength that out of a certain independent cloud composed of thought-forms of a moth-like kind there arises all at once a being holding within itself more life-power than the other forms

This happening may be pictured as a swarm of insects in which the greater part is made up of the lower representatives – the thought-forms – yet after a certain time there appears in their midst a ruler or a queen, bearing within herself, through the glowing heat from the human spirit, a power many times higher than the lower forms had until then

The kind is the same, yet the inner power is all at once of another kind

Thus out of the thought-forms having the appearance of weaker creatures working in the given kind of volition there emerges all at once one or even several beings of a higher order, which have within themselves in a certain sense the capacities for independent action and for dominion

Out of the original forms of thought-volition there thus developed beings which gained for themselves a certain independence, and in this independence they subsequently developed within themselves their own consciousness and an instinctive intelligence, quickened by the power of the volition of man

It may here be said that if we were to take the human spirit, at a certain remove, as capable of creating beings out of himself, thus distantly imitating the Primordially Eternal Creator, then the Furies, just as on the other hand many other beautiful and helping beings arisen out of pure volition, are the created “children” of the human spirit

Here it is needful to remark that the human spirit does not possess the creative power of his spiritual force within himself, but that under all circumstances he himself always draws for it from that ever-streaming neutral Power which has its origin in the source in the Divine

He is therefore doubly guilty who not only creates horror-filled formations reflecting his attunement, formations which are to attack others, but far greater guilt flows to him from this, that he shamelessly uses for it the translucently pure neutral Power flowing hither to the Earth from the Divine

The creatures which he creates testify unequivocally against him, for it is always easy for the seeing one to observe the threads which stretch from these monsters back to their originator, because they are interwoven with him

They are in a certain sense his creations, in which he has a share and which arose out of his intuitive volition, being nourished into a certain independent life and activity

In the case of the Furies we may then speak of a working which contains within itself a part of his immature, but above all of his perverted, evil volition

It must here be noted that a share in the creating and the nourishing of these beings has for man always an evil end, for since this kind of being always remains bound with its creator or its nourisher, the conclusion of it all in the case of the Furies is this, that they, like evil, wild beasts of prey, in the end turn upon their nourisher and fall upon him, in order to tear him inwardly to pieces

Yet that is not the sentence itself, for there still flows to such a man the necessity of atonement towards God, Whose life-giving Power he used for his evil manner of volition

This atonement is not easy, for it requires very much will in man towards progress forward, that in the understanding of what he has done he may find, together with humility, the strength to create benevolent, pure beings which will in the end outweigh his transgressions upon the scales

If he is not able to do this, then he is burdened with his own creations and is dragged ever deeper into the planes of perdition

If we take into consideration that today not even the smallest part of mankind knows anything of such a thing as the living-lifeless creatures of the Furies, arisen out of the thinking and the volition of man, then he who once thinks upon it in depth must be shaken by the picture which truly exists in the more delicate world around us

From this there flows a grave warning for man, that in every moment he should be master over his intuitive impulses and never give passage to any form of uncontrolled anger

Thus many play childishly with thoughts of cursing others in their vengefulness, and in the feverish wish for the fulfilment of their satisfaction they expect that furious evil will fall through this curse upon those intended, in order to harm them, and they do not realise that, according to the Law of God, the final victim of their evilly intuited wishes must in the end be above all they themselves

There need not even be any magic for something akin to the Furies to be born in the end, which will testify against such a man who allowed himself to be drawn down into this kind of evil volition

The Furies which arise out of such evil, especially intuited by man, are bound with him and wait for the opportunity of his own weakness, which sooner or later will come, in order then, as we have already mentioned, to tear him to pieces and to suck out a great part of his life-power

We have here a greater number of kinds of Furies, which work according to their origin and thereby manifest themselves as living expressions of the qualities of impure human volition

We shall find Furies of envy, of hatred, of lewdness, of mistrust and of lying, also Furies of fear, which arose out of the wish that another man should be afraid for himself, there are Furies of mammon, of pride, of vengefulness and others

There are also Furies which, though at first sight they might seem harmless, are in reality the most destroying for the human spirit

To these belong above all the Furies of godlessness, that is, of the furious rejection of all that is luminous and of God Himself, and of the evil attacking of all men who trustfully strive for the path to God

Many a man will now ask how precisely such Furies can be dangerous for man

This lies in the fact that if such a man is driven into straits by some events of life, then precisely these Furies, nourished by him, will not permit him to open himself with his inner being so that in trust he might turn for help to the Light, to God

There returns to him again and again, through the wild Furies, with the power of a gale, exactly that which he sent upwards against God, or that with which in fury he attacked other men who before that had seemed to him naïve in their faith and in their conviction, and provoking to him, although they themselves had perhaps done nothing to him

The Furies of godlessness will not permit him to open himself, for with their beaks, which most of them have so as not to leave their victims a moment's peace through their attacking, they do not grant such a man to lay hold of anything higher, more luminous, because they do not wish to allow him, through his hitherto existing set of thoughts, to overstep their influence

And it is precisely the Furies of godlessness which are the strongest that man upon Earth has let arise to life in the last century, and now these wild figures lead so many a man, who perhaps would gladly under the influence of some events occupy himself with something higher, into a state of deep inner conflict which may culminate even in a despair leading to self-destruction

Such a man, in the experiencing of some events, calls hesitantly to God, begs for help, but no other answer comes to him than a grinning mockery which brands him a weakling, taunts him for the state in which he finds himself and rejoices in his despair

That is an example of the working of the Furies of godlessness

We may here say that of the Furies there truly exist several kinds

In their gradually acquired independence the Furies became servants under those dark servants who, in their own fall, had again taken the side of the fallen archangel

The Furies developed into creatures serving the darkness, for out of the dark volition of men they were born

In their partial independence they also formed for themselves a shape, that is, an appearance which is more than terrifying

In part they bear a human likeness, yet this is deformed into monstrosity and even into dreadfulness, in which however it is possible to find the origin of the kind of volition out of which they were born

The Furies, unlike the demons, are of the feminine kind, yet their forms are truly horror-inspiring

We may in part find human features upon them, yet there is in them always a doggedness, an aggressiveness, a fury in the most dreadful appearance

They have within themselves either a certain feverishness, or on the contrary a dreadful coldness in which they work upon men like machines, exactly and unswervingly, in proportion to the uncertainty and the timidity within man

The predatory look of the countenance is always filled with a certain superiority, for out of man they always bear within themselves a part of the pride and the haughtiness with which they consider themselves to count for much more than man

Their eyes bear within themselves nothing human, but they come nearest to the eyes of evil, dangerous beasts of prey

Endowed with claws, and often also with wings which the fallen archangel completed for them with his will, so that they might be swifter than the human mind, they are able to surround a single spirit who bears within himself homogeneity with them in some direction of his impure volition, and to pursue such a one until his complete exhaustion unto destruction

Throughout the long history of mankind upon Earth some of the Furies were, by animistic servants such as Thonorun, Orkanos, Sirius, Haetheine and others, at the entreaties of spirits from the luminous heights, always after some time encircled and fettered behind bars, so that they might not destroy the human spirit more than he can bear

These were always periods of a peculiar, brief respite for mankind

Yet this held only until the time when men created new creations of Furies and again gave them new, often still greater power

For thousands of years the Furies were at various moments, above all in the times at the end of wars, in the complete exhaustion of men, fettered by the High animistic servants, so that mankind under their furious working should not in the end destroy itself and also this glorious planet Earth

From the Light it was not willed that Ephesus also should follow the path taken by other world-parts, which in the end had to be left to destruction, or which at the bidding of O-dio-nar were destroyed by his animistic servants

Thus it was for a long time upon Earth

Under the abiding radiance of the Son of God Jesus the Earth enjoyed a special protection flowing from His intercession for this world with the Father

Yet already for decades, at the bidding of Parzival, in the fulfilment of the strengthened Law of Reciprocal Action, these Furies have been gradually released, so that they may fall directly upon those who bear within themselves homogeneity with them and who are therefore in a certain sense co-nourishers of these living forms of evil

Thereby we can observe ever more distinctly their increasing influence directly in the conduct of some men

Despair and self-destruction are wont to be the consequence of the working of the Furies upon man

Thus already a considerable time ago there were released from their chains the Furies of lying and of mistrust, also the Furies of hatred and of envy, the Furies of mammon and others

Only a short while ago there were released from behind the bars by the mighty Hareiars the Furies of dread and of fear, which lead man to wholly incomprehensible conduct in his terror before all the dangers which he imagines might come in his life upon himself, or upon those close to him for whom he is afraid

Such an attunement is possible with every one who has not within himself trust in the protecting forces from the Light, or who inwardly senses that through his way of life he is far from them

Now there still remains the releasing of the Furies of godlessness, which will bring to many a man the heaviest experiences, without his yet sensing anything of it

In the highest distress many will thus call upwards for the help of God, yet the answer will be only vanity, accompanied by the mocking croaking of the Furies

We may thus expect that the real time of the veiling of the countenance of God, when the Furies will be about almost every one of men, is yet to come

According to the way events are developing it is to be expected that the time of the Furies is not far off, when in the hours of the night they will fall upon the homes of men, and these will find no place in which to hide from them

A great part of mankind will succumb to them upon the plane of the psyche, and almost overnight will wholly disintegrate in their personality, so that they become destroyed wrecks without the will to live

Yet no one is exposed to these peculiar beings, which the ancient peoples in their power even held to be goddesses of wrath and of vengeance, without help and protection

If the inner being of man truly calls fervently for help, and he strives at the same time to bear himself towards the world around him with pure humility, in the complete lessening of his own self, then protection from the Light will surely be granted to him

No one, therefore, is given over to the influence of the Furies without having the possibility of defending himself against them

The power of the pure, fervent calling of the inner being of man for help is always in the end the stronger, if there is at the same time within him that mentioned fervent volition to change himself for the better

The will to change for the better in the genuine renouncing of all that is impure is the decisive moment for beneficent beings to be permitted to descend to the help of such a man, beings which in their luminosity are always stronger than the seemingly invincible Furies

The Light always triumphs over all the darkness

That is a Law working in all places in Creation, and it is a rescuing rope for every one who does not let his trust be taken from him in this Law, which springs from the Light, from God Himself

Therefore no one who is of a pure disposition in his inner being should fear the Furies, however they may assail him through the most varied experiences

If man maintains within himself the inner connection with the Light, then he can never be driven by these beings as they wish, but on the contrary his inner light will in the end always put them to flight, just as the Furies themselves are driven away by the mentioned Light-bearing beings which constantly protect the good man upon his paths

The starting attitude for the true certainty of man in his walking through life is the laying of himself in trust into the protection of the Grace of God

This trust always brings inner calming and a clear mind, which are the best helpers for every situation

Therefore also some time ago there went forth here upon the pages of the Way of the Grail the call that as many purely striving people as possible should join the Circles of the Peaceful

In a common striving people thus attuned may then send one another strengthening from afar in the form of protecting, beneficent beings, if perhaps some other man should waver and in the moment of the sinking of his trust should need such help

Mutual helping from afar in deeply intuited helping thoughts can help many people whom we ourselves do not even know

We need neither know them nor judge whether they are worthy of our support, for all this is ordered self-actingly through the attunement of the inner being of such a man

The long-term attunement of the inner being itself determines to whom the helping being sent forth may come, just as it is precisely the long-term attunement of the inner being which determines who will evidently become the victim of the wild Furies of fear and of many other kinds, which a short while ago were released by the High servant Hareiars, so that the reciprocal action in the lives of men might be fulfilled with acceleration

The Furies were also released for this reason, that in the end, when the last man who let them break into his nearness sinks exhausted beneath their claws, the Furies will then fall upon one another, in order to tear themselves wholly to pieces unto extinction

Then their wild dance will change into a mist which the animistic Orkanos will blow far away, and over the whole Earth there will spread an unprecedented, peace-filled silence

All this will come to pass in the Laws of the Wise Will of God, which works therein constantly, exactly and clearly, and it is only the confusion of earthly men which does not let them recognise in it all the greatness and the perfection of a high kind

In the end, however, all will be transformed also in the men who remain here, and thereby the unending questions will cease as to why this or that happens to man

Together with humility there will enter into their inner being recognition, and subsequently also great thanks for the possibility of being a part of the glorious work of Creation of which we are permitted to be the inhabitants
