A great advance in spiritual maturity is, for the man striving towards the Light, that moment when there comes alive in him a whole, by nothing conditioned volition to help other men

It is a fundamental shift in the perceiving of true existence when the spirit experiences a volition, no longer separable from itself, to help other men upon their way to the Light

There are not many such men on Earth who would exchange their own interests and comfort for the pure joy which the inner being of man is permitted to experience precisely in the moment when he helps others, at the cost of his own lessening and self-restraint

Never is it to be something which is laid aside by man after an inner struggle with himself, but it is to be the result of a state of the inner being, attained only in the complete attunement of that inner clarity and greatness with which he approaches the noble service to the Light

In this decision there needs to be the highest degree of freedom and of liberty

To such a degree, however, only a few ripen

This because the condition for such a disposition of the inner being is the full experiencing of the consciousness of a mature spirit, whereupon he then bestows his whole power and his abilities fully upon the service to the Light

Although in the heights of the Light something such is an entirely natural happening, here on Earth there often precedes it the experiencing of the strongest changes in man, which bring a freeing from anything that forms the need of personal distinction and of asserting oneself in life for oneself

In this setting, in the need of the satisfying of one's own wishes and also of asserting oneself so that it may be appreciated by other men, is to be found the greatest part of earthly men with their endeavours in life

It is not, however, only those wishes leading to the longing for visibility and for glory, for ruling over others, as it might seem, but this state of asserting oneself hides itself most often precisely in the very smallest things also

It is therefore not only the strong experience of possessing things, of tasting of the great feelings of satisfaction in something earthly highly prized and acknowledged, but this fulfilling of wishes is hidden in the finest vibrations of a volition of an almost invisible kind, which nevertheless in the result sets itself as an obstacle against the blessing of the helping service to the Light

For example, it is the volition to cling to accustomed rest and repose at a time when it was precisely far more valuable to think of others and to expend one's powers upon something important, upon the helping of other men

It may also be skilfully hidden in the needs of anchoring oneself in some established rhythm of life which, however, may manifest itself as a brake upon the expending of the powers needful for the help of one's fellow men

The carrying out of pursuits dear to man, which are a delight especially only for himself, however much these are generally regarded by men as very noble activities, all this has often a root holding deep in the thinking of oneself in the first place

Thousands of hours devoted to one's body, to one's home, to the little garden, to travelling, to the study of the sciences and of philosophies, and further the devoting of precious time to much else that exists on Earth, all this may easily tip over from a healthy, natural experiencing of life into the degree of an absorption in one's own world, whereupon such a state then necessarily brings the loss of that which is most precious – the progress towards the spiritual maturity of man in his interweaving with other men

There are many kinds of self-absorption, whereby in the end the main direction of the striving of the spirit here on Earth is entirely lost

Thus it may also be precisely an inclination to a manifold comfortableness, which often skilfully hides itself behind the outward mask of modesty and humility with which man justifies to himself his unwillingness in the helping of other men

Often then such self-absorbed men hold in their own thoughts, for example, already formed words

“I am not the one who is to devise how to help other men today. For that I am too small and insignificant. For something such let there be others here”

Or there will resound in the head of such a man an excusing thought

“Yes, someone should at last do something for the bettering of the world. But that must be someone other than I, because it cannot be changed merely by some small things, for which in any case I am hardly sufficient”

At another time man almost already decides to do something, but with him it ends in the end in a condition of the intellect

“Of course I am ready, when at some time in the future a man asks me for help in a concrete matter who from my standpoint will be in all respects ideal and unambiguously working for a good cause. Such a one I shall be willing to support in his helping of others with all my powers So far, however, I have found no one such”

And also very often there resounds an apologetic voice

“So gladly would I do something but I still need to arrange these and those important matters and then at once I shall be ready to occupy myself with the helping of other men”

There are endlessly many such moments when regard for oneself and for one's small wishes is an obstacle to the true helping of other men

It is a sign of a certain unfreedom of the spirit, which is entangled in the snares of the earthly view of life

Almost always it holds that it is a matter of some kind of volition to experience something which still turns aside upon side ways, other than what the true direction of a helping volition for other men, filled with love, requires

The spirit which has awakened in the Light, however, lives of itself in the helping volition of its inner being and cannot do otherwise than continually seek ever new ways

It therefore holds that he who still needs here on Earth experiences for himself, for his tasting of various sensations, such a one is not yet spiritually inwardly free, for there have not yet fallen away from him all the wishes of a material kind

Such a one is not even to compel himself and to struggle within himself, because only a free awakening to the will to wish to help others is the right moment of the transformation of his spirit

His spirit will advance and will draw near to the moment when it will be given him to drink from the spring of the eternal lovingness of the Light of God

Only he who inwardly, entirely freely, uplifts himself above his personal dimension of being with the great wish to help others, only he will find a fulfilment and a joy of a higher kind, which will thereafter join him manifold times more with the Light in the heights of Creation

His spirit will break its way through to the freedom in which, in a drawing of breath, it will at last catch a glimpse of the existence of the blessed ones in the luminous heights, where these blessed ones live perpetually in a helping, loving happiness in which they work, in union with the wise Will of God, for others

A fulfilling happiness will enter into his life and in every new day will bring him the knowledge of a high spiritual wisdom, if he goes on perseveringly and rightly and does not turn aside from the main direction again upon one of the side ways

Every new experiencing will open before him a more whole prospect of the true understanding of what true spiritual existence in the great Home of the Creator is

With every advance of his spirit he will come to know the simplicity and the translucent plainness in which all the existence of all the light-filled inhabitants of the Work of Creation unfolds

In this experiencing he will ever more easily spin those streams of helping volition for earthly mankind, those streams which are like mighty rivers of the Light

These luminous rivers will draw near to him in order to uplift and to lead him, and he may then help them wisely and purposefully to find for them the direction towards further men

It will be made possible for him to live easily and freely, as though with a part of his self he were already permanently in the Light of the spiritual home

His liberation will lie also in this, that inwardly he will be freed from the experiencing of the attacks and the enmity of other men, and in his entering into a genuine volition of a helping kind he will bear with greater lightness the immaturity and baseness which will perhaps set itself in his way in the shape of men who still bear within themselves their own unhappiness, weaknesses and faults

He, however, will not perceive them as those who hinder him, setting themselves obstructively in his way, he will not behold in them enemies, but he will be aware that they are those who have not yet freed themselves from the confusion of the earthly world, from its narrowed boundaries of judging, and who in this their perceiving will not understand such men as long to help men lovingly in the service to the Light

He will bear with a certain conscious understanding that many men cannot recognise his own motives for a helping service to others, without the need of glorification and exaltation, and he will sense that always on the part of these men there may easily arise the possibility of imputing to him self-seeking and side aims, for those who think thus proceed for the most part from their hitherto experiences with other men, or proceed directly from their own intentions and wishes

Neither upon such men nor upon all other men will he look with thoughts of bitterness and with the wish for satisfaction in their further experiencing

Filled within with the Light, he will pass the Light on further and will look always in the first place to be helpful at all degrees to human striving, if there shows itself the need to give other men effective help for the strengthening of their self-confidence and of their hope upon their way through life

Surrounded and pervaded by the Light, he is to stand in his service wisely and lovingly

Only in such a conscious attunement, through a man wholly open to the Light, can there stream to the Earth blessed help containing strength and strengthening, which refresh the individual and the whole

He passes on this help of the Light without himself separating anything from it for himself, or expecting for it, on Earth or in heaven, thanks and renown

He simply gives in the helping of others upon all the levels of his being, because his inner being cannot act otherwise

He gives, because his spirit experiences in this unconditional giving the fulfilment of an inner happiness and joy

What against this is the understanding of the earthly world

Out of the Light he weaves help and blessing, and anything else is for him not comparable in its nobility and greatness, which he finds precisely in the giving of himself to others

Such is the picture of those who through themselves direct the streams of the helping rivers of the Light to this Earth

Only few among men have ripened to it in their spirit, that they should give themselves into the service of the Light wholly with their consciousness and expect nothing special for it as recompense

The pure joy flowing from it nourishes their spirit as an exceeding recompense, which they themselves in fact do not even perceive, for the very awareness of it would tear away a part of the sacredness of the noble vibration of their whole attunement with which they serve God in love

Oh, would that there were on Earth as many as possible of such as nourish their spirit out of the Light and do not await for it human praise and reverence

Would that there were on Earth enough of those who weave from the heights, in their thinking and in their acting, the rays of pure love, through which whole streams of helping aid can flow to the Earth, destined for the refreshment of all the souls still living and healthy within which are here at this time
