Many men striving towards the Light, who were permitted to come to a higher knowledge and became knowing ones, strike in their earthly life against a steep wall which sets itself in their way and hinders them from being able to help effectively the men around them

This wall hinders them from helping and brings also to many an inner tension in the intimation of the unfulfilled promise “to be of benefit to the Light”, which sounds forth from time to time when in man the voice of his spirit fights its way to the surface

If we leave aside that the most frequent thing of which this inner wall is composed is comfortableness in thought and a lack of courage to compel oneself to the deed, then a great obstacle in the helping is precisely the seemingly immense gulf between the demand from the Light for the ordering of the life of men on Earth and the actual state which today presents itself

The difference prevailing between these two poles is for many knowing ones in their helping activity a great obstacle with which they know not what to do

Often men bearing within themselves still freshly the knowledge of the high meaning of man's existence on Earth, drawn from the Word of Truth, are almost paralysed in the seeking of ways to other men, for they are unable to bridge within themselves the distance between the newly recognised ideal and the reality which prevails around them on Earth

On the one side they have the knowledge of the highest demand of the Creator upon the striving of man towards the spiritual ideal, and on the other side there lies before their sight the surrounding world of men, such as it is

Many a one perceives this as a reason for turning his face away from the present world, for this world of today, through its distortion and its faults, outwardly cannot bear at all the measure of the strict demand of a life according to the Will of God

At the same time, however, it is clearly visible that in this world there is a great number of men who are not so corrupt within, but who are often only entangled in the snares of a distorted view of the meaning of life, thrust forward by the darkness

The wall which separates the mankind of today from an openness to receive the knowledge of Truth seems to knowing men often insurmountably high for any finding of connecting threads

The demand of the Will of God upon mankind, from their standpoint, entirely passes by the world around them, and the knowing man gradually comes to the conclusion that men here on Earth can hardly be helped, for everything seems vain and ineffectual for the desired great change

Besides this, there is also generally still a waiting for the appearance of someone who as a strong spirit would first break through and show the way to the others in the living of a pure life pleasing to God, visibly filled with true service, so that they too might walk upon it

Let us leave aside here that in this expectation there is the admission of a certain comfortableness which none of those who reason thus wishes to admit to himself

In reality everything is far simpler, and there is in it not nearly so much complexity as is sought in it

Everything is simple, but it requires movement and the volition to occupy oneself with such a thing as the serving of the Light through one's pure life, whereby at the same time other men are helped

Knowing men give up all too easily their task “to become the salt of the Earth”

Of course there are here courageous exceptions, and to these great thanks are due for their untiring work

In the endeavour “not to defile themselves with the world”, however, many knowing men today flee from the exertion of seeking effective ways to help their fellow men, and as the best way they seek to move themselves into the singular, precious role of “keepers of the treasure of high knowledge from the Light”, which in the end does not permit them to occupy themselves with the other men on Earth in helping them towards their spiritual awakening

For years they are immersed in texts in which they study round and round without end, with their clumsy intellect, things which their spirit has long since comprehended and accepted as its own

But they will not listen to their spirit and strive desperately to grasp with the intellect that which is by the intellect ungraspable

Thereby they only confirm the words of Jesus, that the spirit is indeed already willing, but the flesh – the intellect, is weak

In this, however, they rather behold their own exceptionality and greatness, instead of reflecting upon why with their intellect they make everything so complicated for themselves

In this singular disposition the knowing man who reasons thus feels himself moreover also a little as one standing higher, in the relishing of his knowledge, and this attitude may easily make him arrogant as well

He looks upon the world and upon other men sharply critically, without however having within himself also sufficient pure wisdom, which alone enables the spirit rightly to judge faults, when at the same time a clear and whole way out of these faults is also offered

The sharpness of the implacable criticalness of such knowing ones indicates, however, that these men who know Truth have in reality nothing at all to offer, or that they hold within themselves conceptions of short-sighted solutions which, if room were given them for their application in the manifold human society, would lead only to new suffering among men

Such a convulsively black-and-white approach of these knowing ones towards other men indicates that they themselves would swiftly bring back the times which have already been here and which, under the pressure of a fanatical implacability, caused in history countless injustices and grave blunders in the forcing of others against their will towards seemingly well-meant ideals of a better life

Such men, who through their critical sharpness overlook the necessity of an enduring liveliness in the balance between the ideal and reality, are not truly knowing ones at all and in reality only do harm to Truth

In their attitude towards life there is a certain mixture of aloofness and of fanaticism, when they suppose that with their arrogant attitude, with which they hide behind quotations of words torn out of the wholeness of the Word of Truth, they serve the Light and the Creator

As an incantation there is to hold good in their case also the cry “God demands it so!”

Precisely this human cry has brought in the whole history of mankind countless sufferings into human destinies, for in reality there was never meant with these words a serious following of the wise Will of God

The Creator never demands anything so overstrained from those who wish to serve Him

Neither does He desire a service in which aloofness from other men is to be, forsooth, a proof of exceptionality and of greatness upon which everything else is built

Men who build their service to the Light in the first place upon an exceptionality which is to be shown towards them, without its resting upon the natural greatness of their personality, have not yet matured for true service

Nevertheless it seems that there are always enough on Earth who see in themselves a person exceedingly precious for the further development of the world

Without having offered the world anything truly helpful which could be regarded as the fulfilment of service to God, and which at the same time would bring uplift to mankind even if only in the smallest advance towards a healthier life, they bear within themselves the supposition of their exceptional role, which from their standpoint is grossly under-valued by earthly men, and this irritates them most of all

Very often they live in a bitterness flowing from this lack of appreciation on the part of other men

They live solitarily, cut off from the surrounding life into which in reality they fear to step out, because they sense that their supposed greatness would, at a meeting with unknown men, swiftly suffer in its lustre and glory

Then there are here knowing men who, on the basis of their hitherto experiences, have come to the weakling conclusion that they hardly fit into the world of today, and that they will evidently have to suffer their life through until they reach the end here, wherein they behold for themselves only the beginning of the glorifying appreciation which will be accorded them for their earthly struggle with the baseness of men, as they call their sighings over the world

In his continuation in the spheres beyond this earthly world, more than one such man beholds himself as one returning from the vale of tears of earthly existence, who will surely be joyfully welcomed by the Light as a radiant spirit who has overcome it all and has not become entangled with the erring earthly world of men, which has no knowledge

Such a “great spirit” already looks forward to entering one day through a triumphal gate into the lighter planes, which will at last correspond more to his inner nobility, and to finding there a corresponding understanding among glorious luminous friends in how greatly they will be in understanding accord with him in the view that on Earth nothing at all could be done for the bettering of the life of the reprehensible inhabitants there

He supposes that the Light will understand his painful earthly experiencing and with full sympathy will assent to him in his complaining about the whole erring mankind, in the looking back upon his grievous way through an unwelcoming earthly world

Such, and alas not otherwise, is very often the established thinking of many men who were permitted to know Truth and who became knowing ones in the recognition of the great connections and laws of the Work of the Creator

Yet this view is only a deceptive seeing which will not strive for the overcoming of the wall between the ideal demanded from the Light and the actual state here on Earth

It seems that for men who reason thus the essence ran through their fingers in the reading of Truth

Such will always strike against the said wall which separates them from true service to the Light

This because the said wall is always to be found in man himself, not in the outer world

It can be overcome only in an entirely new setting of one's volition, with which the knowing man is to look upon the world around him

In the first place this new thing lies in the seeking of all that is here open to a harmonious attunement

It suffices only to try it and to have therewith within oneself the awareness that the creator of harmony is to be in the first place he himself, as one versed in the principles of the Light, not the others, who do not know this and from whom therefore more conscious striving cannot be expected

If the knowing man takes this important step, then he will see that it is in fact simple to draw near to men, that it is easier than he ever imagined

It suffices to take this inner step forward

And behold, all at once it often shows itself that there is here no small multitude of men who do not indeed know the great Truths about the Work of Creation, who have not even clarity within themselves in the question of the Light and of the existence of God, but who are open to an attunement to a creative harmony which is graspable for them as the experiencing of something meaningful that gives them hope of a better world

Even this, in itself, is very much, for the attunement of harmonious accord is not easy to create today, and still more so to maintain enduringly

That to hold harmony for a longer time in the relations of men among themselves is not possible without the exertion of all concerned, we may see in this, that not even knowing men are able to do it among one another

They are not able to do it, although they should have all the prerequisites for it in the knowledge of the great Laws of the Creator

This shows that it is therefore not only a matter of knowledge, but above all it is a matter of the genuine volition of the spiritual inner being of man to attain something such

The attunement of harmony is therewith the foundation which is always to be sought as the first thing, upon which alone there is then to be built further

Without the maintaining of a certain degree of harmony it is not possible to create and to hold any degree of nobility of character among men

And men who wish to help the Light here on Earth surely also wish here a better, more noble world, whose inseparable foundation is naturally precisely harmony, which has many forms and degrees

The serious striving for the seeking of harmony is indeed a sign of a spiritual maturity which has made its own the experience that the “loving of one's neighbour as oneself” mentioned by Jesus is always formed out of the offering beforehand of reverence and of respect towards the other man

For this man may develop out of himself all the manifestations of intuitive perceiving and of nobility of character which came alive in him and unfolded in his work upon himself

It is good to make one's own the giving of reverence and respect to others before man will expect it from others

And precisely in this striving there will appear for everyone much refreshing work, if he has begun to occupy himself with it in earnest

He will always find places which he may still improve, polish further towards a greater becoming luminous

He will also easily discover that in such an attunement, when even in the smallest and most ordinary meetings with other men he seeks the attunement of harmony through the offering of reverence and of respect, that formerly felt wall which separated him from others is all at once not at all so high and insurmountable

Indeed he will even discover that there is here no wall at all, for by the lessening of himself he has drawn near in the natural course of things to other men, without anything exceptional having to be found in it

At the same time he will also recognise the fact that he indeed has knowledge within himself, but that often he himself is in fact no better off than other men, if there is to be talk of the forming and the maintaining of harmony in the approach to the most varied situations

This may lead him to occupy himself with it all the more, with humility within himself, and gradually to discern in it an important key to the hearts of many men

Yes, precisely that important key which lies in the pure warmth of his spirit, which wishes to help others

His own inner seeking of accord with others will of itself draw to him the hearts of all who are still open within through their spirit

All at once there is here for such a knowing one a new joyful soil which gives him the possibility of weaving in the streams of helping volition for all who are not yet within themselves so far from the Light as not to wish to experience harmony with other men

He may stand beside other men and have with them the attunement in the seeking and the holding of harmony in all the most ordinary things

What is more, he may, along the threads which descend to the Earth with every creative setting of harmony, weave in ever more naturally the strengthening streams in which for others there is contained the opportunity of comprehending that this harmony is the essence of life, which bears within itself the message of God and of the Light

If this setting in him is right and inwardly living, then sooner or later men who are able to experience harmony and joy with him in their inner being will catch these streams, and these will lead them further, for these streams are always in the hands of the luminous servants, who precisely need to have on Earth courageous men forming the bridging for their all-embracing luminous working

Let us consider here an important fact: where then are men to find the help of the Light, when those knowing ones who are on Earth often give up their task and wait foolishly that in their refusal of honest endeavour and of the work of the spirit they will one day find an indulgent understanding in the Light, after their departure from this earthly plain

How can they expect for themselves understanding and praise, when already now in their earthly covering they clearly perceive that they give up too quickly and too easily there where they, as the very first of the first, are to be the creators of the soil for harmony and for a joyful, noble attunement which always bears within itself something more than mere superficial talk and soulless amusement

In a natural approach to life knowing men are to be the creators of that attunement in which lies the possibility of the inflowing of the helping streams to men who otherwise, of themselves, would not reach these streams

If, however, these streams are caught upon the soil of a noble setting of creative harmony, then it is much easier for such men as have joined themselves with this attunement that something more inspiring should flow to them from their spiritual helpers from the heights

The creating of a knowing harmony is, however, not possible to carry out apart from men

It cannot be mediated by anyone who at the same time does not wish to be with men, who closes himself off and seeks to estrange himself from the world in which he is after all set in order that he may work in it like the leaven in the dough

The helping streams of the Light incline towards the Earth and do not regard the desperateness of a state which only seemingly appears so to our black-and-white understanding view

Knowing men did not receive knowledge from the Light in order thereupon to withdraw from their fellow men in the earthly world, but precisely in order to let themselves be led by the Light to other men and to help them

The meeting with other men in creative purity, in a natural, noble harmony, as the originating soil upon which alone the higher streaming can then be caught, bringing for many men inner questions which would otherwise never have germinated in them, that is true service to the Light

In reality there was never here any separating wall between the demanding of the Light towards men and the actual state today on Earth

It is always possible here to create a bridging which will of itself find the right channel in which, from the standpoint of the Light, that which is best for the anchoring of the helping streams will be found

That bridging lies in the capacity of knowing men to bear harmony within themselves and to apply it in the meeting with those men to whom, through a higher guidance from the Light, they may naturally be led, in order to be helpful for the mediating of the streaming in which there may thereafter descend wise help in the form of inspirations from the luminous helpers

To be a bearer of harmony is that fundamental thing which each of the men who were permitted to be endowed with the knowledge of the Word of Truth may do for others

This, however, means to work upon oneself and to lay aside upon oneself and within oneself all that in man is still the reason why he does not maintain within himself the needful attunement of harmony in which something higher, creative, spiritual can vibrate

There is therefore for no one any reason to complain of a separating wall, but it is entirely fitting to remove within oneself all that forms this wall in the direction outwards from man, towards other men

Around all men who long to help the Light on Earth there are here ever present the streams of helping radiation

These streams are in the present time of the nearness of the Ray of Parzival so strong that it is possible literally to call them mighty tidal currents, indeed rivers and great streams filled with the power of the Light, made ready for the help of the earthly world

Therefore away with sloth, away with excuses about an unknowing, hostile outer world

Only forward with courage, and everything will begin to change in union with the wondrous blessing of the Light

The luminous helpers who work around every knowing man who truly longs to help the Light here on Earth are now so near that it is possible to hear their strengthening, joyful assent whenever they succeed, through the agency of the earthly servants of the Light, in directing the strengthening streams of helping powers to the multitudes of the seeking ones

It is time to open the hitherto heavily closed sluices of the channels of the Light, for the noble companions of Parzival, who mediate the help of the Light from the heights of Creation, now expect this from all the knowing men who are at this time on Earth
