On the Outer Line

Upon the outer line of activity in matter it is always man who is to stand

He is to stand as a servant of the Light, patiently and wisely creating and building in matter

In his hands lie the building up and the expansion, for which he is to draw forces from the Light, forces which in great part are mediated to him by the purely standing woman, who brings to the Earth the rays of blessed vibrations from the spiritual heights of the work of Creation

Out of these forces mediated by woman man needs to create and to shape the happenings in materiality

As the agent bringing movement, advancement in the development of things, he is to work in a clear and consistent understanding of his task

Only thus will he attain happiness and the fulfilment of life

If he stands purely, with a knightly attitude within himself, then his work will always be accompanied by the support of the Laws of Creation, and he will be an esteemed man of noble character

Instead of this the man of today is for the greatest part uprooted, torn out of his clear path, and he staggers from place to place, seeking in vain the meaning of his being in secondary things

In order to find himself again he needs to have within his heart a clarity as to the meaning of why he lives upon this Earth

That is for him the starting foundation, which needs to blaze up within him in full strength

He is the agent, the mover of things in materiality for the exalted service to the Light, and in this lies that outer line upon which he is to stand

He is here for the fulfilment of the legacy given by God, to build upon Earth a reflection of the spiritual home, to create here a space where only blessed peace and happiness dwell

In this direction he is to shape into the actual form of earthly arrangements and institutions the hope and the radiance which woman receives through her delicate constitution from the higher spheres of the Light

If he works in this striving ever more consciously and more wisely, then his spirit grows strong and he becomes a t r u e s t e w a r d of his own life and a p r e c i o u s h e l p e r to other men upon their path

The holding of the front line is that which gives to the life of man a charge of strength and of heroism

The holding of the front line therefore often requires a struggle for the rousing of the inner and of the outer forces

This struggle needs to be undertaken by man again and again

Even though it be a matter of the smallest things, their fulfilment and their being carried to a successful end always brings refreshment and strength, just as it is with the greatest heroic battles

In the ordering of earthly tasks it does not therefore depend upon the extent of the activity, but upon the result, which is to be carried to a successful completion

And it is precisely thus that there is formed that front line which belongs to man and where he is rightly in his place

Upon this front line man is also to prove his capacity as the protector of true values

For the fulfilment of the task of the protector of values there belongs to him a great duty – to occupy himself constantly with these values, to penetrate into harmony with them and thereby to gain wisdom in the recognising of the Truth, of the Will of God

In the recognising of the Truth he is permitted to rise ever higher, and his inner being acquires the capacity for respect and reverence towards other men

To hold the outer line lastingly and with certainty means very much here upon Earth

Therefore every man who has set this goal for his life may, through the currents of the spiritual mediators, gain for himself connection with the high spiritual servants of the Light, with the knights of the Grail

To bear within oneself this precious connection means, in the most living striving, to carry it over into material creating, building, and also into the guarding of all that is pure upon Earth

In this kind of working such a man then becomes a true knight of his time upon Earth

He is the bearer of the sceptre of the true stewardship of values in the life upon Earth, and at his departure from this gross material plane he is then in wisdom to pass this sceptre on to a new generation of young men

Therein lies the genuineness of the life of man upon Earth and of his holding of the outer line

In such a walking there is also to be found the connection with a path which may be called the fulfilling path, which rises ever higher and higher into the planes flooded with light

From thence, from these exalted worlds and planes, one may then more surely sense and perceive the nearness of the source of all knightly spirituality, which dwells in the Light-flooded courts of the Castle of the Grail

Every man who walks through life with the open perceiving of his inner being is in a certain way, through the connecting chain of helpers, at last joined with the source of all things, he is joined through the threads of pure knightliness with the Grail

This connection then gives him the strength and the certainty to stand firmly and wisely upon the outer line of activity here upon Earth

Firmness and wisdom, however, are not to be like a jewel which is cherished and guarded for use only in great matters, but they are always to be used without hesitation even in the smallest thing, in the most ordinary trifles of everyday life

Only in the using can strengthening flow to man from all the exalted servants of the spiritual and of the animistic kind, who stand above him in strengthening

The great animistic ones, Thonorun, Orkanos, Sirius, Neptune, these and many others honour every drop of sweat which falls from the brow of man in the exertion of his forces in work which demands of him concentration and physical effort

Yet there are, alas, many labours which belong to true service to God, and from which the man of today runs away, for he strangely considers himself either to be of high value for something higher, or he occupies himself with his own person in courses of self-knowledge, while for the most part he has only a weak will to overcome himself to any work at all which is not at the same time his earning

All of this, however, in the result testifies only to the indolence of spirit and of body

Thus many a one must necessarily fail in this, for even the smallest work in which he may be of help to the world around him is always the foundation of the greatest work

There are but few men who stand rightly in this and who are ready to work upon something meaningful which helps their fellow men and which is in harmony with the Will of the Creator

The holding of the outer line also brings to man the duty to protect woman in her working, to support her in this and to help her

Man is therefore to be here, in the working of woman in her task, her shield and her protector

And that not only in what he considers great, but he is precisely to be a support in the smallest things, which are not so visible

If he neglects those seemingly invisible things, then he shakes the firmness of the outer line, just as if he had failed in a great battle

And it is precisely in this direction that the ground of the home suffers today most of all at the hands of many men

Outwardly man wishes to appear strong, but behind the walls of the house he is often a weakling who runs away from the tasks that call for his perseverance, his patience, his self-control, which require him to set his hand to the work in the common building of the peace of the home

Often he is in truth unable to bring even the smallest thing into the life of the household which would testify to his will and to his energy, and which truly helps woman in the fulfilling of her precious task

Whether that woman be the one with whom hand in hand he walks together through life, or his mother, or any woman in his nearness, there always arises for him this duty of supporting woman in her high task

Alas, all too often, instead of being a supporter, man is a disturber who draws off the forces which woman needs for higher things

Not seldom this shows itself in a lack of reverence for the purity and the order of the home, in an insufficient independence in caring for his own things or even for himself

Also in an unwillingness to take part in the running of the most ordinary matters of the household, in which he is to take his share either personally, or else to provide for these things so that help may be given by some one from without at his prompting and with his support

In the thought-picture taken over from his fathers and grandfathers he expects as something self-evident that at home he will be attended to by woman as one cares for some precious personage, or on the contrary as one looks after a helpless child

That this is a strange contradiction is realised by almost none of such weakling men

On the one hand he considers himself a strong leader, the head of the family, one who knows everything better than the rest

On the other hand, when it comes to carrying these overstrained presumptions about himself into realisation even in the most basic matters, then very often he swiftly runs away in despair, or rather makes of himself an uncomprehending creature, or there awakens in him a tyrant who settles the slightest difficulty with shouting and violence

Away must be cast this very strange attitude in the thinking of man, in which for thousands of years he has considered himself something more than all the other beings upon Earth

This thinking is in reality a bane for him, hindering him in true knighthood

Nor was there ever given to man from the Light the prototype of such a caricature as has here upon Earth been gradually created

Many a weakling also expects that merely because he is in a masculine body he will have self-actingly better conditions for his advancement, and that it is given to him to decide upon important matters, without however having confirmed in the least through his striving that he is a true support and a firm certainty for a virtuous life

Like an over-fed, drowsy animal many a man wallows in his self-deceits and expects that for this he will reap the admiration and the reverence of others

When then he is really to show his capacities, he manifests, instead of the will to co-operation, only vanity, rancour and hatred, which he transforms into coarse attacks upon others and into strife

In this he considers himself great and expects that his immature, ignoble ways are welcomed by the Creator as a confirmation of his precedence in being over woman

This conceit about himself has already wrought all too much harm

The man standing upon the outer line is to be a strong buffer for the mastering of all the things which draw near to him and to those close to him in life

He is truly to bear upon his shoulders the whole edifice of the home and of the life of society, so that upon these planes woman may be permitted to unfold her radiant virtues

This requires effort, self-conquest and battle, yet of another kind than he has hitherto known

In his hitherto existing perception of himself many a man has become all too superficial, one who expects that woman will secure for him a cosy home and will cherish him merely because he creates the impression that he is occupied with important matters, matters which however are for the most part only seemingly grave, while in reality they are often but playthings for his own pleasure

It is ridiculous, and in all that is spiritual in the planes of the Light in Creation it awakens only sorrow and disappointment

In Valhalla there then sounds towards such a man one thing alone – contempt

Only in the real exertion of his forces in the endeavour towards co-operation and harmony with all the other fellow inhabitants in Creation is man to find within himself the opportunity for the unfolding of the powers of a true knight

That, however, requires everything other than what he has done and still does

Untiring vitality, mobility in the spiritual, in the thinking and in the physical direction, that is the path which man is to take, in order that he may grow and become strong as a personality who can truly become the steward of an ever greater streaming of forces from the Light

Even as the whole Earth cries out for woman to enter upon her true task, for the mediating of the luminous currents to all life here, so in the case of man there is awaited the entering upon the true path of firmness, of endurance, of tenacity, that is, the attaining of the qualities which every good steel must contain within itself

Only in such vibrations can the independence and the spiritual preciousness of the masculine principle unfold

All helps are made ready for such a striving of man, both on the side of spiritual inspirations, and likewise the principles of courageous advance are prepared which descend to the Earth from mighty Valhalla

Even as woman blossoms in gentleness and charm, so man grows and becomes strong in the full acceptance of the responsibility for the defence of the outer line, and that precisely at the price of self-conquest and of inner battle

If he undertakes this path without taking fright and without resorting to weakling manifestations, then only out of such an attitude will there gradually be able to emerge from his hands the foundation of the Kingdom of God upon Earth

Peace and blessing will penetrate into every corner of the world, as a consequence of the faithful and pure service of man to the Light and to God upon the outer line of the everyday tasks brought to him by life

Would that there were here as many men of steel as possible who recognise the true meaning of their being upon Earth

The present time needs them in the highest degree, that the Earth may be permitted to pass happily through the difficult periods which lie before us all
