Lifeless Cleverness

Lifeless cleverness may be the name for all the results of the work of the intellect in which there is not at the same time present an irradiation from the intuitive perceiving of man

To this cleverness belongs the whole compass of all the knowledge hitherto amassed in the world of thought

This knowledge is preserved in its rigidity for further use

Only in union with the intuitive radiation of the human spirit can this otherwise motionless knowledge be brought to life and subsequently led to a new creating

In Creation it holds good that if something is without life, it can be said of it that it is dead

Lifeless cleverness is therefore in reality a dead cleverness

In order that cleverness, which of itself is lifeless, or in other words dead, may have any sense at all, it must always be brought to life

This can be done only by the liveliness of the radiation of the human spirit

If therefore the human spirit works with the knowledge to be found in the world of thought, he can breathe a certain movement into it, and thereby lay into it the needed power of intuitive perception for its enlivening, if he wishes to turn this very knowledge to account for some good cause

He can then work with this knowledge in a living way and, in union with higher inspirations, create anything meaningful which here and there finally becomes truly beneficial for the whole

If, however, the amassed cleverness remains the only thing which of itself is to shape something, then the results of this dead cleverness will always of necessity lead only in a mistaken direction, if we start from the fact that people bear the spiritual within themselves and that their task is to unfold this spiritual within themselves to the highest degree of perfection

The ever greater influence of dead cleverness among people will bring only their own deadening

It will lead to an ever greater severing of the earthly world from the other parts of the work of Creation, for in the manner of working of dead cleverness there will always remain a clumsiness and also an insensitivity which cannot rise higher into the finer planes

However much anything among the results of dead cleverness may appear as valuable knowledge for the earthly activity of people, it will always be attained only by the assembling of already finished particulars

In this no liveliness is to be sought, but at most only the dexterity and the speed with which the amassed knowledge is raked over by the dead cleverness

Dead cleverness will for ever act only within the bounds of the knowledge laid into it

This, however, gives only very little strength for a genuine liveliness, tending towards the expression of a creative good, to be able to arise within it

Inspirations out of the spiritual parts of the work of Creation cannot penetrate into it

The higher planes of the work of Creation are a place filled with the living radiation of God, in which the all-renewing Power streams unceasingly

This radiation cannot, however, unite with that which has grown rigid in lifelessness, for thereby it has become of another kind

Rigid cleverness has nothing within itself which would make possible for it a direct union with the mentioned radiation

Thereby there arises an opposition against the Spirit of God, Who is the highest life

The bridge remains the human spirit, who with his radiation can so glow through the earthly instrument of the brain with intuitive perception that thereby a way is formed for the renewed connection between the inspirations of the spiritual worlds and the amassed knowledge lying motionless in the grossest materialities

People with an overcultivated intellect do not, however, wish to see this

They see only their own earthly world, which today is predominantly shaped by intellectual knowledge alone

The knowledge it has gained, however, the intellect always regards as the highest

It is never otherwise, for the intellect lacks for anything of the kind that humility which comes from the spirit

The intellect supposes that it is it alone which was permitted to arrive at the vistas contained in knowledge

Therefore now, at the very close of its era, the intellect must bring its activity to the very summit, where the severing of the human world of thought had to assert itself as its greatest work

Under the pressure of the present working of the Ray of Parzival, which compels everything to be brought to visibility, the intellect rooted in matter created its supreme work – a dead ocean of cleverness

Dead cleverness, because it comes from amassed human knowledge, has recast a part of the former wisdom into narrowly rigid templates, and has thus finally become a solitary stump severed from the original living trunk of wisdom

A stump can hardly yield blessed fruits which would bear refreshment within them

Dead cleverness in itself will therefore always remain a withered branch of the once original living knowledge of the things of this earthly world, and in part of the supra-earthly world as well

Like a mummy it brings only the testimony of a former knowledge which it has amassed within itself and which it is able only to sort and to sift through over and over again

Even though it does this with truly great skill, it will always remain merely a rummaging in something which had already been shaped by people at some earlier time

It can never bring a healthy and fresh building up, for it lacks for this the higher connection, which can be mediated solely by the living intuitive radiation issuing from the spiritual spark in man

The spiritual spark must thereby always remain above it all as a creative power of a higher kind

Herein also lies the great danger for earthly man, if he wishes to bow beneath a product of a lower kind than he himself is

The subordination to a lifeless knowledge which overwhelms man by its apparent compass is a threat to man of an ever deeper collapse of his spiritual nature

The amassed breadth of knowledge of the cleverness thus created astounds, yet it will always carry within itself only a dead immobility lacking any living inspiration

If people begin to subordinate themselves ever more to this cleverness, then they too enter upon the path towards deadening, opening for themselves the way to a complete suppression of intuitive perception through arid maxims and arguments which remain only fragmentary parts of the human knowledge attained

Fragmentary knowledge is never the whole living Truth

The inner being of man, however, necessarily needs for his development and his advance upwards towards the spiritual home to draw upon a living wholeness, which can come to him solely out of the Truth

There is therefore here a great difference between the living knowledge of the Truth and the dead cleverness amassed by the intellect

But alas, ever more people today give ear to the self-assured sounding voice of dead cleverness

This comes from a certain homogeneity which is formed by the intellect

With many it will finally come to a complete subordination to the influence of dead cleverness

People who of themselves have not sufficient liveliness within to be able to establish the connection with the inspirations coming from the supra-earthly planes hang with the whole weight of their thinking upon dead cleverness, which forms for them a substitute for the mentioned connection with the higher inspirations out of the source of all-wisdom

Instead of striving to unite themselves with their spiritual helpers, and in everything connected with the world of nature to seek the answers from the animistic servants, they form a helper for themselves out of dead cleverness

It is the subordination of the maker to his own Golem moulded out of clay

It is lamentable to follow this development, which should already today lead to the highest alarm in the world of men

It is truly dreadful when a wakeful observer is permitted to look upon the consequences of the direction taken by an enormous number of people

And even people who are convinced that they are filled with spiritual striving prove by their ever growing dependence upon dead cleverness that they are no less intellectual than the fellow men above whom they not seldom exalt themselves

These do not in the least suspect that they thereby issue themselves a certificate of unfitness for anything truly spiritual

Although many of them suppose that they walk the path towards the Light, in reality with their thinking they have wholly attached themselves to a dead substitute for the true living connection with the refreshing streams of radiant inspirations out of the Truth

For many this will become an important turning point in his inner development, for it is possible to notice one's dependence upon lifeless cleverness only up to a certain degree, after which the tipping over into complete intellectuality sets in

From this intellectuality a man can then, in order to attain spiritual independence anew, free himself only by the utmost exertion of his powers in a fervent struggle, in which his intuitive perception calls longingly to the Light for help

In the way of such a striving, however, the intellect lays many obstacles

And as with everything hitherto, the present spreading of the influence of dead cleverness too is deceptively taken for progress

There can be no clearer proof of spiritual weakness than when someone takes the influence of something lifeless over himself for progress

The words of the Son of God Jesus, "Let the dead bury their dead", thereby take on yet another and menacing significance

Dead knowledge surrounds the world of men today and penetrates ever deeper into the human manner of thinking with a speed that knows no bounds

That many a person thereby goes to meet his complete spiritual petrifaction, and thus the deadening of his own abilities of living reflection through intuitive perception, shows itself ever more in all the everyday dealings of people

It goes very swiftly downwards, without anything of it being observed

In a short time it will permeate absolutely everything and will make mankind entirely dependent in all its deciding and acting

In the end it will be precisely dead cleverness that decides what people are to do, what they will eat, where they will sleep and where they are to set out upon a journey, or what is to be their livelihood

Cleverness will insinuate it to them with the stamp that it is the very best for them themselves

Of themselves they will do nothing without first asking dead cleverness what is best for them

It goes without saying that today people will smile incredulously when they are told that in a short time they will be entirely under the dominion of dead cleverness, and that they will do this quite voluntarily, and even with jubilant cries about how great a help its influence is for the earthly life of man

But the inclination of earthly people to make everything easier and simpler for themselves, that is, the inclination to inner as well as outer indolence, is precisely that upon which dead cleverness has counted from its very beginning as the way to a gradual mastery over the greatest part of all people on Earth

This was reckoned with already at its very outset

Therein indeed lies its greatest strength

Already at its arising, when it came forth from the hands of people cunning in intellect, the starting point was that through the inclination to comfort and to inner immobility almost all people would finally become voluntarily subject to it

It is once again a masterly move devised on the part of Lucifer, who thereby triumphs through the two greatest human weaknesses – the inclination to comfort, and the intellect grown unhealthily rank through one-sided cultivation

Were this left to its own spontaneous course, mankind would in a short time end in bondage to its own product – it would end under the complete supremacy of dead cleverness

Against this last move of the Antichrist, however, there advances with tremendous speed the approaching happening, which is the work of the animistic servants and which has as its aim to bring liberation to those human spirits on Earth who still remain alive within

Through the strict and unsparingly harsh interventions of the animistic servants a way bends down towards the Earth which, in union with free human beings, brings through the approaching great transformation the rescue in the promised spiritual enlightenment

But those who serve the principle of Lucifer, which from the beginning is a part of his failure in the exalted service to the Creator and consists in the endeavour to destroy all that is spiritually weak, seek to bring their greatest trump into play – here on Earth they wish to achieve the complete dominion of lifeless cleverness over the human spirit

We thus take part in a happening which will move ever more swiftly towards the sharpening of the opposing sides, with all the consequences for mankind that result therefrom

Through his being in the earthly, every human spirit dwelling on Earth today takes part in the happenings belonging to the time of the promised sifting of mankind in the Judgment of God

The sifting into movable and immovable human spiritual sparks is being fulfilled ever more with every day

Whoever longs to remain inwardly free, and thus independent of the present conditions on Earth, needs to maintain within himself the ability of a lastingly wakeful intuitive discernment of everything to which he voluntarily professes himself and with which he unites himself by his own decision

This deciding, moreover, no one can make for him

No simplification can be made in this, for it is precisely in the effort of lasting wakefulness that the confirmation of the inner liveliness of man lies

To perceive everything simply, and in inward sensitivity to discern the outcomes of an otherwise hidden tendency in this or in that, is now the demand of the present happening

In no very long time people will no longer be able to withdraw easily from many of their decisions, saying that they have thought better of it and want something else

Lifeless cleverness will surround them to such a degree that they will not recognise its influence, and thereby by their own voluntary decision they will attach themselves to that which is designated as dead

Lifeless cleverness surrounds the world of men today more than they themselves suspect

With cunning it waits for the manifestation of comfort-seeking in this or that person

It waits so as finally to draw him into the circle of its amassed hypnotising knowledge, with which at the beginning it will always advise him and help him enticingly

Abundantly fattened by the ever growing eager interest of people the whole world over, it grows and gathers strength until for man himself it becomes invincible

Beside it everything spiritual which rests upon the supra-earthly kind of inspirations, invisible to human eyes, is already today regarded as something weak and inferior

The spiritual, and also the animistic world, appears beside the steadily swelling realm of dead cleverness seemingly as one defeated

This is, however, only because no one among earthly people today can see to the end of the working of the animistic servants

They will be the victors in the end, for they stand in the vibrations of the Will of God

In strict subordination to the commands of the Ray of Parzival they will bring to the Earth the revealing of Who is the true determiner of all things

Dead cleverness will be defeated and will be pressed back into the deeply subordinate place which belongs to it

Instead of ruling, it will be strictly guarded to serve only there where, by the ordinance of a higher wisdom, it is able to bring benefit and not ruin

Towards this result we are moving

It will, however, still take a certain time, and alas many people will yet in their voluntary decision succumb to the allurement of Lucifer's snares

Those who are inwardly alive will, however, remain for ever high above the influence of all that would threaten to master them and to drag them down into an indolent immobility

To the inwardly living people of intuitive perception belongs the future world on Earth

All people who are still inwardly alive should therefore awaken all their powers in order to find the connection with the helps of the supra-earthly kind

Only in the unfolding of one's own abilities, which are a part of the spiritual spark in man, can the way open for the deliverance out of all the threats now surrounding the world of men

That unfolding of the abilities of the spirit, however, necessarily requires the union with an inner volition which expresses itself in wakefulness and in mobility in intuitive perception

This shows itself not only in the living of the virtues, but above all also in the perceiving of all that draws the human spirit here on Earth away from the connection with the other parts of the work of Creation

No longer is mistrust in the help of God to prevail, as it manifests itself so ruinously in the life of many otherwise well-meaning people

Together with this, co-operation is always to be sought with the animistic forces of the High servants of Valhalla and of all the weavers of the threads of fate, who alone rightly know the Will of God in Creation

However strange and remote this may sound to the people of today, it will in the end prove to be the only way of freeing oneself from all the nooses which people voluntarily set for themselves when they sought to walk the path of their own intellectual conceptions of life alone

It will be no easy advance for anyone, but the deliverance and the liberation which is sought by many today lies in that which for centuries was denied by the material intellect and mockingly trampled into the ground

Trust in the help of God, resting upon the intuitive perceiving of the delicate guidance of the helpers, is now the only way out of all the folly which the dead cleverness amassed by mankind is preparing to shape for it

May a sufficient number of people be found who are still able to awaken within themselves the ability of a pure spiritual intuitive perceiving

To them the rescuing rope can be held out for their preservation and their subsequent ascent in the time of the great transformations

For them too holds good the promise of a spiritual enlightenment such as has never yet been upon this Earth

Spiritual enlightenment is a living knowledge which at the same time always bears within itself a refreshing strengthening for him who longs to unite himself with the primordially eternal Truth of God
