In the Worlds of Demons and Djinn

If there has already been spoken of the Furies and the Harpies, as of certain creations of a vengeful feminine kind, formed out of the evil intuitive volition of men, then it is now fitting to bring nearer also the life and the activity of the demons, as creatures rather of the masculine principle, of the disintegrating influencing of man

The concept of demon in itself awakens in the reader something supernatural, mighty, standing above man

In this perception there is a part of reality, yet only a part, for just as the Furies, so the demons also cannot arise otherwise than through being formed by the intuitive, spiritual power of man, and therefore they can never truly stand above man, who in his spiritual nature is higher in kind and thus does not fall under their influence, unless indeed he himself wills it so

Man can come under the power of a demon or of a Fury only then, if he bears within himself some faults and weaknesses, through which these evil creations can then gain dominion over him

The inwardly pure man is always protected, and that to such a degree that all these unlovely creations must pass him by, for he stands under the protection of the Light, and it works for him like a shield walking everywhere with him, which holds all these creations far from him

If therefore there is no connecting attunement in man, then neither can there be formed a passage through which these creatures might penetrate from without to the inner being of man

If, however, this protecting shield should be opened a little, on the basis for instance of some strong, agitating intuitive vibration, then through a certain homogeneity these creations can all at once intrude into the nearness of man and trouble him to such a degree that he begins to lose his certainty, his independence and finally also his spiritual power

The mentioned slight opening of the protection may be, for instance, strongly experienced fear, or a long-lasting, harrowingly despairing sorrow and longing for something that has become the past and can no longer be brought back, or which on the contrary was never fulfilled

There may also be yet other kinds of inner agitation

In the same way man can weaken this protection from within outwards through an excessive flaring up of anger and through becoming agitated over something which he lets work upon him with a discordant effect

Every deviation from the harmonious shining of the spirit is always a certain danger for man, for thereby the ground of his inner being is shaken, which is to remain lastingly only in a peaceful and clear attitude

If the peacefulness and the harmony in man are disturbed, then it may come to pass that through a near homogeneity some alien formation of the darkness will wish to attach itself to him, precisely through the mentioned uncontrolled agitation

All this holds if man himself in his purity creates no formations of a demonic kind out of his volition, and if these are therefore to be found in the space outside of him

The demons in themselves, similarly as the Furies, are always formed out of the awakened inner volition issuing forth from man

The fundamental difference between the Furies and the demons also lies in this, that the Furies bear within themselves from the very beginning the will to destruction and to collapse, whereas in the origin of the demons there is at the beginning a certain will to satisfy the wish of man

The demons are very often formed out of the volition of man for something which, like a never-ending spring, gushes forth from feverish wishes for things which are not at all attainable

In this direction we may also speak of the djinn, who are known rather to the lands of the Orient and of Asia

It may be said that they are identical with the demons, yet the concept of the djinn is understood by men rather in the sense of a more acceptable coexistence

Yet as we shall speak further, it will be shown that it is not so, and that the essence of the danger is the same for man with both concepts

The djinn are therefore in their nature seeming servants of man for the creating of illusions in which the man concerned wishes to dwell, because they appear to him better than the real world

They are seeming servants because in reality their motives are from the beginning self-seeking, directed towards gaining spiritual power out of man

The breathing of life into these creatures therefore begins in the inner power of the wish of man

Already in the tales for children there are djinn who wield a great power and who, at the wish of the man concerned, use this power for the fulfilment of dream-images which offer themselves as better than the true world

In these tales there is more truth than at first sight appears

Whether djinn or demons, they are truly formed through the power of the morbid wish of man out of a substance somewhat more delicate than gross materiality, and they have the appearance of a misty, smoky phantom, which however for the most part has wholly distinct forms down to the smallest details

The strong wish of man, built upon dream-images, leads through the demon to the forming of an illusion in which the one concerned finds his own world, in which everything is ordered just as he wishes it

We may here adduce examples:

Certain people who in the daily world, for instance in employment or in personal relationships, are through their attitudes demanding the observance of natural purity and order unpleasant to a man morbidly influenced by a demon

These then appear in his illusory, dreamed-up world as humiliated, perhaps even as his servants, who are struck down before him into the dust, and the dreaming man stands here in his world above them as a victor, with satisfaction and with mighty power

Others dream of a world where the laws of matter and of the universe are denied and where everything is possible

Yet other people ardently wish for possessions and success, which however in their imaginings should fall into their lap of itself, without the corresponding effort of their honest work

Others long for the confirmation of their own exceptionality, in the conviction that they know everything better than other people

Of their exceptionality they are so certain that in the end they may succumb to the demon of divinity

Others see about them nothing but a world of women, or on the contrary a world of men, in which these love them boundlessly and fulfil for them all their wishes

A great multitude of people succumb to the demons which batten upon addictions such as alcohol or other habit-forming substances, in whose phantoms there is contained everything mentioned above and much more besides

There are therefore many paths for man, at first very inconspicuous and to the eye perhaps appearing innocent, upon which he may in the end become caught in the net woven for him by a demon

The mark of all that is bound up with demons lies in this, that their works are nebulous and unreal, even though for the man concerned in his dreamed-up world they for the most part appear as real

Drunkards, for instance, are convinced that they have everything wholly under control and that the world around them does not really see their weakness

Succumbing to unreal illusions is always the mark of the influence of a demon

If we look with keenness upon the men of today, we may say that a great multitude live under the influence of their feverish wishes for the fulfilment of illusory dreams

The hearth of these wishes is wont to be selfishness or vanity, however they may hide themselves behind the most varied shapes of wishing

These wishes are strongly glowed through in the inner being

That suffices for everything to become for such a man at least a partial fulfilling of his inner wish, and with this glowing through there begins the birth of a djinn or of a demon, who is ready to build up for man a dream-world down to the smallest details

Let us here point out that the dreaming after the unreal is something entirely other than, for instance, the world of creatively thinking inventors and of people seeking ways that lead to the progress of a healthy human existence

Only a thin line often stretches between such creative thinking of a man who seeks a better world and the dreaming of weaklings fleeing into realms of illusions, which must always remain only a phantom, for besides a healthy spiritual power they also lack the support for reality, which lies solely and only in the acknowledgment of the Laws of God

Although this line may be thin and seemingly even identical, if man wills he can always observe therein a fundamental difference

The difference lies in the healthy, honest seeking of ways towards realisation on the one hand, and in mere unhealthy fantasising and dreaming on the other

The healthy always aims at bringing to life under the condition of seeking pure and honourable ways, while the unhealthy either has not the strength for realisation, or else this realisation is then very often at the cost of other people, to the suffering of the outer world

In the case of a healthy striving there are on the contrary about man helping, more luminous beings of the intuitive kind, which bring him prospects and inspirations towards realisation

Dreamy wishes and fantasies, on the contrary, stand for the greatest part in contradiction to the vibrations of the work of Creation

Often a merely innocent playing with fantasy leads swiftly to the nourishing of a kind of thought out of which there are then gradually born demonic beings, which form about man the scenery of a false world in which he feels so beautifully, almost as a ruler

At first sight it may all seem amusing and lead to indulgence, yet that only until the time when such a man for some reason wishes to awaken and to free himself from his own illusions

Only in that moment does there appear the power of the demon who created everything so beautifully for man, and who gradually drew the dreaming man into the scenery of the worlds which he had prepared for him

Out of the servant there swiftly becomes a tyrant, who sinks his claws of spiritual power into man, into his own nourisher, and will not let him slip away

There arises an inner struggle, often leading even to the splitting of the personality

The threatening insistence of the demon alternates with promises and with still more beautiful pictures

All this grows into ever more monstrous dimensions, which swallow man up and do not let him draw breath even for a moment

And yet all this happens only in the head and also in the more delicate forms spreading about such an unhappy one, without the outer world often sensing the least thing of it

The more strongly spiritual power is sent forth by man into the spinning of thought-pictures, the more it comes to the creating of a demon, or even of several demons, and they hold him with a hundredfold power in their world out of which they arose and in which they live

The heavy threats on the side of the demons against the man who afterwards wishes to free himself from their influence can be so destroying that man collapses beneath them and becomes a lifeless shell, or even in some ill-considered manner puts an end to his life

Yet neither is that an escape, for even after the laying aside of the earthly body the demons hang upon the shell of the soul and draw this soul-consciousness of man into a world which in that moment is still more real

Thus whole hosts of spiritual masters, presuming of themselves that they are spiritual giants and perhaps even gods, live for thousands of years in their worlds, without sensing that it is only a delusion and a ridiculous play which the demons working about them create for them

Many shamans, sorcerers, but also priests of ancient times, still float in their “worlds”, into which they entered with enthusiasm after the laying aside of their earthly shells

The same happens to many “holy men”, yogis, spiritualists, who let themselves be carried away by their fantasies about their own exceptionality, and the demons or the djinn formed out of them created for them, at their wish, whole worlds which appear to them as real and in which, from their own view, they are unlimited rulers

With reality, however, it never has the least thing in common

From the outward view such unhappy ones find themselves in a kind of rigid state resembling a hypnotic stupefaction, and they perceive no one about them

Outward help cannot come to them, because they do not see and do not hear, for they are swallowed up by their world, which is maintained about them by their servant-demon, who thus survives upon the remnants of their spiritual energy, which he sucks out for himself

Often these souls are wholly destitute, lying somewhere in the gloom of the sorrowful spheres of the ethereal twilight

We may find them variously strewn upon dark cliffs, where there is nothing pleasant that might uplift man

It is a desolate place which reflects the poverty of their true deeds for others, for these souls thought above all of themselves, of their own enjoyments, which they formed into realms issuing from the work of their demons

Undernourished is their soul, upon which the sharp bones stand out, and its soul-garment has, during the time which it spends here, often almost fallen apart upon it

More luminous helpers who come to them from time to time endeavour to speak to them, now and again they even shake them in order to bring them to an awakening, but everything seems in vain

The falling into their own dreamed-up, unreal world has become for these strayed ones a trap in which their demon holds them, fulfilling their wishes for them in endless repetition

And yet it is so easy to become free, for one single courageous volition, that the Light of Truth should enter into such a realm like a radiant torch and bring confirmation of its genuineness, brings it about that everything at once sets in motion and such a demonic realm is shaken to its foundations

Of the world of illusions there will then remain only shreds of nebulae, and only then will the soul recognise its true state

At the same time this awakening is for it a great opportunity, for after an endlessly long, missed time there opens before it the possibility of advancing forward in the real world

Bitterness against itself is then a matter of course with such souls, if they awaken, for they realise what a long time they have missed for nothing

In the missing of precious time there threatens them that they will not manage to complete their ascent to full spiritual maturity before there elapses the time measured out for the whole world community which is situated lower in the Subsequent Creation

Their striving must then be many times stronger in the advance forward, towards the Light

These foolish ones let themselves be cast into the trap which their own unhealthy volition had prepared for them

For the most part these unhappy people who live in their unhealthy fantasies sink in them only ever deeper and deeper

And yet their worlds are nothing, for they are formed by djinn and demons, who have not the power to create anything but a phantom

One single breath of a fresh, pure current suffices, and such a supposed world dissolves like a misty haze beneath the hands of the animistic servants of the air

The real danger of these demons here upon Earth, however, lies in this, that from time to time the power of a demon can pour over from one man to other people, and gradually there blazes up in such multitudes the conviction that what they have believed, and what has become binding for them, is to hold also for the world of other people who have nothing in common with it

Thus upon this Earth there have arisen through thousands of years many demonic influences of the most varied kind, of which the best known for the men of today will be, to mention them, the unreal ideas of communism, likewise the morbid thoughts of nazism, or the most varied forms of religious fanaticism

Here too there belong to a certain degree the insatiable dreams of some rulers, or of very wealthy men of riches, of subjugating the whole world

Such people were to be found upon Earth through thousands of years always in a certain number

Their conviction that the course of the world according to their own imaginings would be the best thing that could befall mankind is almost always the beginning of succumbing to the demon of pride and of vanity

However much for the healthily reflecting, pure man there can never be anything natural in these thoughts, in the end it may come to pass that the demonic influence of leaders pours over upon the multitudes, which under their influence change into a kind of governed mob which, after the pattern of its leader, who is led by a demon, craves the carrying over of an unhealthy and pernicious illusion into the real world of men upon Earth

Together with the power which grows as an ever greater number of people nourish the phantom of the demon with their spiritual power, their own fantasy appears to them in return as ever more real and realisable

That, however, is always necessarily in contradiction to reality, which springs from the fresh severity of the Laws of Creation, and the dreamed-up illusions will sooner or later strike against this fresh severity

There arises here a contradiction and a collision between the morbid world of the dreamers and the healthier state remaining in other people

The demon, or the demons, however, drive their people forward, because their highest goal is to reach the greatest possible number of people from whom they can receive their spiritual power

The resistance of the healthy part of society then creates a field of tension, and thereby there arises the ground for thought-phantoms of strife and of hatred

Out of this there are again formed Furies, and the whole sphere of thought about such a happening necessarily darkens and gains in tension, as it is with a storm cloud

The clashing of opinions constantly intensifies until a spark blazes up which awakens a conflagration that rushes over men, and the striving for the enforcing of the phantoms nourished by demons then goes literally over corpses

Whole hosts then act as though bereft of their senses, enraptured by the phantom above which there stands triumphantly a mighty demon who governs and directs it all, for he has received for it forces out of the spiritual energy of millions of people

This enrapturing of the multitudes under the influence of a demon is then able to create the supreme illusion, and that of such a kind that the lie appears as truth, and the truth is attacked by them in fanatical bias as being a lie

Every one may reflect upon it and intuit it rightly

This state came about also precisely two thousand years ago, when the mob governed by demons and Furies cried “Crucify” towards the Roman governor Pilate, in order to influence him in the fateful decision to deliver up the Son of God Jesus to murder by crucifixion

It is something terrible when we picture to ourselves how easily men here upon Earth are governable through their immature impulses, which suffice for the most dreadful scenes of suffering and of pain then to be played out

Only then does the real danger of the demons emerge for the seriously reflecting man, demons which are formed whenever the dogged volition of man aims at goals which strive for realisation in spite of an unequivocal contradiction in relation to the Laws of God in Creation

In morbid volition and in spiritual immaturity man can easily lend his power to the germ of a demon, in which the one concerned wishes to believe out of himself so strongly that he succumbs to its pictures, which in the end grow to immense dimensions, if the one concerned provides them with his power out of himself for a longer time

Fortunately the will of most people is too unstable, and so the majority do not maintain in themselves for long that doggedness which they would concentrate upon a single point of their wishes

In this there lies for many a great protection, that always after some time they are torn out of their fantasies by their spiritual guidance and directed back to experiences of a kind more needful for their spirit

In the moment of the disconnecting from a demon which was born in some beginning unhealthy dreamings of man, it at once begins to fade, it grows smaller, until perhaps it perishes altogether

Yet it may also at any moment still return, or attach itself to some one else who opens himself to its influence

Jesus spoke to His hearers of this happening in a picture, when He described the owner of a house from which, after a certain struggle, long-standing uninvited guests are driven out

If then this owner after a time again slackens in his vigilance in the protection of the house, the expelled guests return again and rage in the house with still greater harmfulness

The danger therefore lies in this, if man in his moments when he is alone with himself returns to the vibrations in which again and again he gives his hand to the already withering, shrinking demon, and this one comes to life again

If this lasts a certain time, then it may come to pass that the demon, already in part fading away, senses the weakness in man and incites him with its pictures to a further weaving of fantasies, until in the end it winds itself about man like a serpent about a tree trunk

It climbs upwards along him, in order at last to come above man and to be able to govern him wholly

In the moment when it feels itself to be the stronger it begins to draw its noose tight, misusing for this the lasting weakness in man

In that moment it is important that some one else from without, who observes the change in such a man and wishes to help him, should bring about a change of circumstances, for instance through a change of surroundings, of habits, through a change of the tasks to which the one concerned is newly to devote himself and in which he will find meaning and joy, or through yet other influences such as a change of diet, of sleep and others

Yet it is not easy today to discern when a man is passing through a change which is the result of falling into a morbid state of dreaming, and when on the contrary a man finds himself at the beginning of his transformation in the seeking of truly pure ideals

Nevertheless it is possible for the receptive man to observe this difference

A healthy man longing for exalted ideals will never shun joyful, creative work and the helping of other people in the smallest things

The morbidly dreaming man, however, will flee before every such striving, for he needs to devote his time only to himself and to his demon

Nor is there any sense in speaking to such people of their being in unhealthy dreaming, but it will help only to direct them step by step towards working upon small tasks, and above all to join them with the vibrations of nature

If the linking of the thoughts to the demon is successfully led away, then a wondrous awakening swiftly comes about, and such people become from one day to the next healthier again

It is always possible to triumph over the influence of the demons

Yet not through battle, for battle gives the demons only new and ever new power

As has already been said, the most right procedure is the retuning of the thoughts to simple and healthy reflection in the helping of other people, and above all the holding to a joyful, fresh attunement

Pure joyfulness is something before which every one of the demons flees, for the moments of pure joy bear within themselves the connection with the Light and thereby with the naturalness of life

That is something through which in the end all demons will perish and wither, whatever the kind of their orientation may be

All the power of the demons slips off and falls away before the natural, healthy life of the man who walks simply in the Love of God and passes this on through his deeds to other people

We live in a time in which men on a large scale laugh at the fairy-tales of demons, yet for the eyes of the seeing one it is precisely the present time above all which is filled with the great influence of demons

Only very few people are truly free, not succumbing to some kind of demons, which hover about whole multitudes, waiting for the opportunity for nourishment in a weak moment of the single human being

And opportunities for this men supply in more than sufficient measure every day

The immoderate drinking of alcohol and of other substances influencing the psyche is literally a nourishing ground for the fastening on of demons

The same is the case with the reading and the watching of fantastic works which incite thinking torn out of the framework of the laws of nature

Instead of truly occupying themselves with such admonitions pointing to this state, men would burst into laughter if some one told them such a thing

Yet that they are thereby the slaves of one, and often even of several demons at once, ought to lead them to a serious reflection upon the purity and the healthiness of their life

Many pay millions in order to rid themselves of their bodily ailments, which however in reality flow from the bondage of their inner being to demons, for the earthly body must sooner or later begin to sicken under the lack of the power which flows away to the demon attached to man through his impure inclinations and unhealthy fantasies

Yet the time is not far off when, beneath the strong currents from the side of the High animistic servants, the heavy mists of the demonic worlds about this Earth will be blown away

Yet it will not be a joyful blowing away for those who, like slaves, hold within themselves a dependence upon the worlds of the demons, for in them they still today find their contentment

Many will have to be blown away together with their worlds of illusions, because they will not find within themselves the strength for liberation

The dependence upon the demons of self-deification, lasting thousands of years, will also drag down into the depths many who still today call themselves “enlightened mystical giants”, whether these be here upon Earth or caught in the nooses of their wishes in the beyond, in the layers of thought about this Earth

The liberation of the splendour of the pure and refreshing state which the planet Earth is to afford to the human spirits dwelling upon it will not halt for a single moment before the seemingly mighty influence of the demons

Nothing will remain of them, and only the gentle breathing of the servants of the air will clear away the last wafts which remain here after the blows of the strong Hareiars and of Thonorun, servants who have now received from Parzival the task of shattering the gloomy worlds of the demons, in which many unhappy souls have become caught through their own weakness, which in their error they held to be strength

Blessed are those who in their purity have never let themselves be woven about by the fawning service of their own demons

The purely thinking man, who works honestly in life and who holds within himself the capacity for a healthy view of himself, may be at peace, for his healthy self-assessment holds him in protection from every false imagining about himself

If he holds within himself joy and childlike pure enthusiasm in the helping of other people, in the longing to serve God and the Light, then all that is described above is not to be for him a cause for anxiety

The connection with the Light will protect him from every vibration of unhealthiness and of falsity
