The planet of which it is now time to speak is, like the planet Astarte, closely akin to Erda in its mission, and in its nearness it has faithfully accompanied her since the beginnings of this part of the universe

For a long time this planet was called green, or green-white, yet the astronomers of today call it the red planet, because the colouring it now bears does indeed shine in a reddish hue

Present-day researchers of the stars, and ordinary people as well, know this planet under the name Mars

Its origin, however, has quite another story, of which no human being today knows anything

From the very core of its forming this planet was bound up with heroism and with a striving that presses vehemently forward, that is, with the masculine principle of activity

The force clinging to the rock of this planet, after it had become anchored under the animistic stewardship of Hareiars, was joined with a lofty streaming of a knightly kind

At its arising the planet belonged to the great servant of Valhalla – to Hareiars

It belongs to him today also, yet at the same time it is joined as well with streams of radiation from the heights of the work of Creation

The exalted streams of spiritual knighthood that incline towards this planet once bore within them a connection reaching even to the very highest halls in the primordially spiritual castle of the Grail

Now it is no longer so, and it rests solely upon the heroism of earthly men whether it shall one day be so again

Those were glorious times of the exalted weaving of the luminous streams of the Grail, which at a certain time descended to the planet of Hareiars

Knightly heroism and the ringing of gleaming armour drew near to the small planet in the neighbourhood of Erda and strengthened it in its blissful development

This planet was to have a high spiritual and also animistic meaning in its influencing of the life of human spirits on Earth

And through a long period of development this mission of it was indeed fulfilled in the most blessed working

Great epics telling of heroism and of knightly virtues descended to this small planet, which at its very beginning was rugged and poor, surrounded only by a cloud of reddish dust as it turned beneath the fierce radiation of the mighty Hareiars

Hareiars administered its radiation, for it had been given to him as an anchor for his working in the far distances of the universe whenever he was to bring the power of his radiation to bear upon the great happenings in the materialities of Ephesus

With disdain he looked down upon the small dusty ball, which seemed to him like a pea and appeared to him a thing of no account

What he was to do with it he did not really know himself, for whenever he willed, in the fulfilment of the task assigned to him, he hurled one of his instruments with all his strength into the materialities, and he never missed his aim, nor did the exact result of the appointed work shift by so much as a hair's breadth

For himself he perceived that he needed no anchor whatever in gross matter, and he accepted it as a distant appendage of his service in Valhalla

Then, however, something changed

From the heights there floated down to him, into the region of Valhalla where he dwells, a snow-white plume from the helmet of one of the knights of the Grail

This plume drew near to him as though sent forth from the Will of the Lion – the knight of the Grail, for Hareiars was through his working to prepare this place for the anchoring of the radiation that had thus joined itself with him and was to sink further down into the depths of the universe

The wild giant grew attentive, for something higher and mightier than anything that had vibrated in his breast until then had touched him

The voice of the primordially spiritual Lion, a small part of which he himself carried in his radiation, rang out and called him to service as a strong animistic servant for the help of the human spirit

This was something wholly new for Hareiars, for until then he had known his service only as crushing, shattering, breaking, and working as an unstoppable force that brings the transformation of the old into the new

And now the planet, which had been entrusted to his radiation as an anchorage for the force of rough, assailing intervention in the universe, was to be raised higher, and the radiation of knightly virtues was to incline towards it

These virtues spoke to him himself with a strange voice, and he felt himself pervaded by a higher Light as he listened to them

But how he was to prepare the distant, worthless planet for so exalted a kind of service, that he did not know

He sank into himself and listened to these new voices that resounded within him

He sought how to carry out the charge of the great task that had so suddenly been laid upon him

After long brooding he sprang up abruptly, filled with joy, for he had the answer, which one of the exalted Valkyries had brought him,

The Valkyries served in Valhalla, to raise the animistic radiation of spiritual heroes into the halls of Valhalla, and one of them drew near to Hareiars as she watched his pondering

She inspired in him a thought that filled him with joy, for in it there came together all that was needed for the carrying out of the task and also for the fulfilment of the picture that hovered about him

Hareiars now knew exactly that he would make upon this planet a reflection of the gardens of Asgard, which bear within them a certain rugged, yet exceedingly pure and refreshing beauty

In the manner that was his alone, he flung himself downwards and with the power of his radiation shook the materialities as he approached the revolving gross material universe of Ephesus

On the way his spear gathered up ever greater masses of cosmic ice, which lay in the spaces between distant stars and galaxies

He came almost within sight of the radiance of Apollo

There he halted, and all at once his arm swung this spear violently, on whose tip clung the amassed crust of ice

Like a great comet of ice of gross material kind, his spear flew towards the small star, which until then had been nourished above all by the radiation of Hermetes from his mighty seat of action, the neighbouring gaseous giant

Hermetes, as the builder of the gross material universe, also has his planet here in the nearness of Erda

It is an immense planet, which was formed as the first after the flame of light was kindled in the central point of this system, when Sirius sent forth Apollo

Of this, however, there will be spoken separately later on, so that everything needful for the understanding of the animistic history of this universe may be made clear for the reader

Now let us return to the creative influence of Hareiars upon his anchorage of activity

With a shuddering the pounding rain of blocks of ice fell upon the planet, as in its immediate nearness the icy core of the immense comet was broken apart by the force of its attraction

Like an avalanche, for a certain time, pieces of the blocks of ice that the spear of Hareiars had borne on its tip out of the far distances of the universe came down upon the red planet

With a rumbling the rocks shook, and red dust rose from them into the heights, where it mingled with splinters of shattered ice and with the forming rain, into which a part of the fragments of ice falling through the thin atmosphere of the planet was changed

The largest pieces of ice flew through the hot space and struck the ground of the planet like floes

In many places there then stood, like immense domes, blocks of ice that remained sunk deep into the hard bedrock of the planet

Towering high aloft, these caught up within themselves the brightness of the rays of Apollo, which, falling from various angles as the planet of Hareiars turned in the course of its orbit, formed rainbow-coloured designs resembling the stained-glass windows of sacred buildings

Then Apollo, who watched it all, breathed forth a hot stream directed towards this planet

And the blocks of the mighty glaciers began to change, as ever more flowing rivulets appeared upon them

Out of the ice brooks began to form, and out of the brooks little rivers

These joined together again and formed ever mightier currents, which ran through the valleys to the places where lakes and seas began to form out of them

The rocks that dissolved together with the ice were washed down into the seas and formed in them a peculiar mineral kind of water

Observing all this from afar, Orkanos drew near to the planet being quickened, and through his breath he made it possible for the evaporating water to rise into the heights and, condensing there, to fall down again in the places appointed for it

All this lasted a long, a very long time, like earthly millions of years

Hareiars was enraptured by it, for it was the first time that his spear had helped in a certain measure to form and to create instead of to tear down and to destroy, which until then was the only thing he knew

He perceived in it something great, and indeed there arched over this deed of his a luminous blessing descending from the heights of the halls of the Grail, whence some of the luminous knights, whose future time in this matter was yet to come, looked down upon his doing

They knew the Will that formed it all

It was the Will of primordial eternal wisdom, which shaped a channel for the blessing that was thereby to reach down into the uttermost planes of the materialities

The planet was to become the planet of the knights of the Grail, where from time to time something of their radiation might dwell, so that in inspirations it should refresh the human spiritual sparks which were before long to develop on the near surface of Erda

The radiation that inclined downwards bore within it the forms for the building of the stronghold of the Grail, which from afar was to shine like a white jewel towards the Earth, where this radiation was to touch the hearts of all heroic men with especial strength

Thus by degrees all the stewards of the elements joined in this work, for on the small planet everything was in a short time to ripen for the coming of a certain kind of life

Yes, life was to appear here, yet of another kind than the earthly intellect imagines, bound as it is to the forms it knows from the conditions here on Earth

All that arose here was more mineral than what we know on Earth, where life was formed out of the compounds of carbon

These forms too appeared in the end, but they had another task than to create the conditions for a long-lasting development of life

It was only the anchoring of forms that were to be brought forth out of the archetypes descending hither into the peculiar conditions prevailing upon one small planet in the universe of the world-part Ephesus

Even that kind of radiation which worked at the preparation of outward life made it possible for kinds of animals and of plants to descend to this place in finer forms, they being derivatives of the forms of life from the gardens of Asgard

Outwardly the development advanced only very slowly, and the work of the animistic ones at this task was a struggle with the conditions that prevailed upon this planet

But at last all the ways ripened to the degree at which the archetypes of the seeds of plants, which were to be the first to quicken the soils here, were permitted to descend into the ground of the planet of Hareiars

Delicate green carpets composed of algae and of small simple plants resembling mosses began to spread out from the places where the radiation for their gross material development was first permitted to form

And it was the exalted Siphe who drew near to the places where diligent work was being done at the development of these small simple plants

The servant Siphe bent down to the prepared fields, which had beforehand been made ready by the small animistic servants working in the soil

Her step hovered above these places and brought a blessed radiation that helped the little elves, who together with the gnomes in the soil formed bundles of helping radiation for the germination and the growth of the first small plants

The first green particles of life showed themselves above the surface of the soils and, like an unfolding green carpet, advanced in all directions, until at last they covered whole great expanses of the reddish ground

Trembling with cold and with the lack of light, they raised themselves aloft and in the parts of their tiny bodies above and below the surface of the soil they formed saps that aided their unfolding under the conditions prevailing upon this planet

The minute particles of the plants withstood the conditions of cold and worked at advancing ever further and further forward

As in a wondrous world of enchantment there appeared this advance of the green carpet, which unfolded here to quicken and to fulfil the archetype that the Valkyrie had brought to Hareiars for this planet

Out of the green carpets there rose in many places immense blocks of ice, which in their massiveness long withstood the influences working upon them

In other places the carpets sloped down to the shores of the waters, which in their streaming from the heights strove not to freeze

Orkanos, who here created the conditions for the climate, led the vapours that loosed themselves from these waters and rose beneath the rays of Apollo up to the regions out of which a light snow descended from them to the surface of the planet

All that arose here and formed life was rugged, so that it might defend its claim to survival

In this very thing there was reflected the strength and the might of the gardens of Asgard, for brightness and ruggedness are what unite into the beauty of those places, where all that is animistic is born for the further quickening of the materialities

And so here too, upon this planet consecrated to manliness and to heroism, everything was attuned to this kind of vibration, and therefore all life here was formed in ruggedness under conditions that upon the soil of Erda would have to be called exceptional, singular and almost incapable of realisation

In spite of all this, however, a pure beauty could be found here, one that corresponded to the kind for which it had arisen

Rugged, modest, and yet, when joined into a whole, captivatingly beautiful was the landscape here, where cushions of moss gradually came to prevail throughout the whole expanse, uniting with grey-red crags and with the strangely turquoise-green waters of the lakes

Observed from places in the universe, the planet of Hareiars appeared in these times as a green-white shining jewel

This because in certain places, beside the wide fields of moss, a multitude of snowflakes had been layered, which in the course of time formed enormous masses of snow and ice

And precisely this disposition drew ever nearer to the vibration of the masculine kind of ruggedness and heroism that came to this place from the heights

The radiation descending downwards united itself ever more with the place of the planet of Hareiars, until after a certain time everything ripened into the moment when, along a ray of white-shining light, the radiation of one of the knights of the Grail descended to the place where there rose the high wall of a glacial block that towered in its height above all its surroundings

The great massif of ice gave the impression of a mountain, but because it was wholly translucent there was reflected in it, through the penetrating light of the rays of Apollo, a radiant spectrum of colours that formed the hues of a sparkling golden-yellow, green, blue and violet transparency

In the moment when the ray of the knight of the Grail drew near, there also appeared here a ruby-glowing red that recalled the chalice of the Grail in the heights

It was as though a heart had quivered, bringing to this planet a part of primordially spiritual life

At that time too there bloomed for the first time in the cushions of moss the first little flower of chalice-like appearance, whose colour was a deep blue and bore within it a kind of royal knightliness

And precisely at that time the first sparks of the human spiritual, which were able to receive something more into their radiation, also began to enter upon the Earth

They were created spirits, who in devoted service plunged into the materialities in order to raise the gross material bodies

From the planet of Hareiars there descended to the Earth a radiation that bore within it the tidings of heroism and of knightly self-sacrifice for the protection of all that is luminous and had in it the radiation of the Truth

It was a blessed connection of a creative kind, which strengthened in all men on Earth the courage and the will to self-sacrifice for the high values of knighthood

As the anchorage of a special radiation the planet of Hareiars, vibrating at that time in a green gleam, sent forth that strengthening of knightliness which pervaded the inner being of every man

Those were times that inscribed themselves into the legends and the great tales in which the knightliness of masculine self-sacrifice for the high goal of a luminous life bore within it the connection with the radiation that the Grail sends out into the whole of Creation

And in the hearts of men this radiation resounded strongly and strengthened them to heroism and to a self-discipline of a high moral kind

The human spirits were wholly enraptured by the nearness of this radiation, and under its working Atlantis was formed as a realm of great and exalted spirits

All that was manly and heroic was drawn on Earth as well to the places where the conditions in some way resembled the landscapes on the planet from which the mysterious knightly call descended

A place of ice and of snow was sought, where in the crystals of ice there lies hidden the ruby chalice containing the eternal mystery of the Truth

This seeking was for ever to bear in all men the will to steeling, the will to perseverance in striving towards something high and mighty that will bring fulfilment

Distant, yet calling without ceasing, there remained a sound that raised all masculine forces to the eternal seeking of the highest virtue of knighthood, which rests in the Grail itself

In the hearts of men on Earth this longing resounded, which surpassed all else and led them to swing themselves up to the highest self-perfecting, even as the resounding call from the near planet contained it

Hareiars was wholly enraptured by the work that had been brought to life

He rejoiced over the blessed working which he – the destroyer – had been permitted to aid as one creating and helping

The nobility of the vibrations of the Grail pervaded his animistic nature also, and he felt himself uplifted, endowed and happy

Great tales inspiring to heroism descended, that the hands of open, luminous knights, priests and singers might write them down, and out of these there arose afterwards the impulses to the real great histories of human spirits who longed to measure up to that which reached them as inspiring pictures of the working of knights and of true noblemen of the spirit

Very much blessing was born of this enlightened working of the planet of Hareiars in the time when the radiation of the primordially spiritual knights of the Grail was permitted to unfold upon it

But this time did not last long

When some heroic deeds had been achieved, there began to grow swiftly in the human spiritual on Earth, together with this heroism, pride also and the craving for admiration and for fame

That was the complete opposite of true knighthood

And thus, as everything in the earthly world unfolded for the comprehension of knightliness, there grew along with it, with the power recognised therein, that peculiar craving to lay claim to respect and to reverence

All this cried out, out of its very nature, against true pure knightliness, which is heroic precisely in its modesty, or in a certain simplicity and in laying claim to nothing earthly

On Earth, however, there grew in connection with knightliness at the same time the craving for reverence, for esteem and for respect

Those who professed knighthood and nobility longed to have influence in the councils of the higher caste in all that arose in Atlantis as the manner of ruling

Thus by degrees the connection with the radiation that came from the star of Hareiars began to slacken, and ever fewer men on Earth were able to perceive the need of modesty in connection with knightly activity

In the end there remained but a few knights, priests and singers who were still able to receive the high inspirations, but their place among men grew ever smaller and smaller

No one wished to listen to the admonition to renunciation and to a simple life for the fulfilling of true knightliness, when life in Atlantis at that time honoured highly and in advance, as something self-evident, everyone who was merely born into a cradle around which father and grandfather were acknowledged noblemen and knights

One after another there fell the threads that joined the ideal of knighthood with the radiation that descended from the heights by way of the near planet of Hareiars

The veiled eternal mystery of the exalted service of the Grail was sought no longer, but earthly fame and earthly position were sought instead

And Hareiars watched it all

His wrath swelled and grew ever greater, also because he had given his forces so that support should reach proud human spirits who in truth no longer even knew what true heroism and self-sacrifice are

Within him it roared and seethed

He watched how many a thread connecting the radiation from the heights loosened itself and hung forsaken downwards like a luminous rope fluttering free

He saw how the blessing that welled from them was lost in the conceit of earthly men, who no longer knew in the least what the will to fight for the high values resting in the Light is

Thus time flowed on, and the falling away walked together with the disgrace of the decaying knighthood of earthly men

In everything the striving after visible fame nested itself, and for its sake many were ready for deceit and for lies

The very opposites of knightliness, such as cowardice and cunning, also clothed themselves outwardly in the mantle of nobility and of heroism, without anyone among men pausing over it in earnest

Every such manifestation seemed to Hareiars a defiling of the nobility that he perceived within himself and prized in the highest reverence of his animistic kind

At last his patience reached its summit, and in contempt of all human knighthood he descended into the materialities and once more hurled his spear into the universe

This time, however, this spear flew in vehemence and in strength as a destroyer

His kind manifested itself again as it always manifests itself

The spear, flying like a blow, struck the course of the cosmic forces and threw out of its circling the whole system that clings to the disc of Apollo

Heavily the great circles administered by Hermetes were forced apart, and he had much to do lest a whole part of the universe fall in ruins

Yet Hareiars attained his goal

The radiation of Apollo slackened for a moment, and all this sufficed for the whole life on the planet Mars, unfolding until then, to be shaken, to come to a standstill and at last to collapse into itself

Whole portions of the blocks of ice fell apart, the riverbeds dried up, and all the turquoise green swiftly vanished

Warningly the red colour of the small planet, which in a short time had collapsed in its blessed development, shone again towards the Earth

In spite of the vehemence of Hareiars, however, a few places still retained a certain connection with the heights, whence the blessed strengthening of all knighthood may still descend

They are no longer the highest halls of the Grail from which this blessing streams, but it is still a strong inspiring vision in which tales and helping impulses for every exalted knighthood may be formed

Thus one of the last knights of the Light who sent his radiation to this small planet was Lohengrin

His blessing of the exalted kind of protection of pure womanhood was permitted to be caught up by one of the open human spirits, who lived in the high attunement of seeking the knightly ideal

In spite of the said vehement stroke of the spear of Hareiars, all men open to the true knightly manner of life may even today still find threads of connection by way of this small planet, which many call the red one

May this bringing near of the working of the planet of Hareiars be an incentive to the most exalted thoughts and deeds of every man

With the utmost exertion of all their forces those who wish to live the honourable knightly life of the spirit shall seek the high service of God, which lies hidden in the mystery of the ruby chalice of the Grail

Towards this chalice they shall strive, they shall honour it and guard it more than their own heart

The reward for this faithfulness will then be for them, when one day they depart from this Earth, the blessed high connection with the primordially spiritual halls of the Grail, in which the knights of the purest service dwell
