Erda – the Mother of the Earth – the glorious servant who faithfully fulfils her service in the materialities of the universe

Shortly after she was permitted to awaken to her service in the highest planes of Valhalla, she was carefully borne down along the threads formed by Hermetes to the place where, under her radiation, a planet of great significance was to be formed out of gross matter

Born out of the threads of the radiation of Herferide and of Hermetes, she awakened in the animistic as a child of the high animistic kind, so as to bear within herself for ever that gentleness and patience which for millions of years she has already proved in her careful solicitude for the small planet which under her working gradually blossomed like a blue jewel gleaming in the reflection of the sun in the darkness of the universe

Valhalla, oh what a beautiful time that was for this servant, when in the lightness of her home she ripened for her task, for which from the beginning of her being she was predestined

From the heights of the white palaces of the high animistic servants she still remembers vividly all that was most beautiful, which gives her ever new strength to hold together, for their further endurance, those layers of matter which under her working form the anchorage for the small human spirit

How joyfully she may receive it when Phermos comes to her and brings from the ruler O-dio-nar a new message for her, for the small insignificant servant, as she looks upon herself

It is for her always a great reminder of her past being in the materialities, which seems to her but a brief moment in comparison with the ages which flow through the halls of Valhalla

She is still only very young, although in her working, in the course of the great happenings upon earth under the rule of Hathmes, ages upon ages have already elapsed, reckoned by the cosmic threads of time

Beside those who have dwelt in Valhalla from the beginning, when out of the inflow of light of the working of Mercury the foundations of the mighty temple of O-dio-nar were formed, and when O-dio-nar in his awakening to being called out: “I serve!”, she regards herself as an insignificant servant born precisely out of the grace of the living power of O-dio-nar

In comparison with the being of O-dio-nar she seems to herself as insignificant as a little snowflake

She remembers her nearest mother Herferide, who with her touch impressed upon her the spark of animistic life and thereafter veiled her in a mist out of which her comely body of the animistic kind was straightway woven

She remembers the call of Hermetes, which brought her to the awakening out of the dreaminess in which as a very young one she dwelt in the awaiting of her service

It was as though only through this call she became herself

She became a bride for the universe of the world-part of Ephesus, which at that time stood close before its birth

Clad in a festive robe, with a wreath of flowers and of golden vine leaves, she stepped up to the steps in the hall of O-dio-nar, so that she might receive the call to her service

Then a thunderous roaring sounded through the space and the power trembled through her tender body, when the words of O-dio-nar called her to the service deep in the worlds which she was yet to know

A quiet “I serve” slipped from her delicate lips when the rumbling and the thundering of the ruler of Valhalla, who called her to the service of the Father of all, had died away

And then again a wave of radiant forces arose and someone's hands took hold of her tenderly and yet surely and firmly, and the world around her changed into a rainbow radiance

In the arms of Hermetes, who from the beginning bore towards her a particular relation, for he was permitted to know the reason of her arising, the frail animistic servant descended downwards, into the worlds in which all seethed and trembled and where in the forge of the mighty arms of the servants of Hermetes, under the developing power of Hathmes, the world-part of Ephesus was forming itself in the development of the happening

Lower and ever lower Hermetes sank with the tender treasure in his arms, and the space changed continually, growing more and more dense, becoming heavy like a thick gruel, as the material particles were driven ever lower into the places where the universe was being formed out of the coarsest matter

Here the roaring was greatest and through the space there resounded sounds which have no likeness today, for under a mighty pressure the particles here joined themselves together, out of which ever higher and higher wholes began to be built into the countless formations of endless nebulae, in which it flashed and sparkled as through heat and power the single stars were kindled, which resembled the sparkling dance of great salamanders

Long she descended in the arms of her protector, who was to her in part a father, in part a bridegroom and in part a teacher

And this delicate animistic servant suddenly knew already that her place was somewhere here, for the deeper she sank, the more surely she perceived her mission

Then from afar there beckoned to them the figure of a radiant fellow who sparkled with power, and the light which flashed forth from him illumined the far space which seemed to be his field of working

“Apollo,” spoke Hermetes, “we are at the place of thy home and of thy service, oh thou frail and delicate servant, Erda”

Erda! How strangely that sounded here, in this place, as though it were a matter of the anchoring of something particular and new

And as this was uttered, the flame of Apollo grew stronger and glowed into the far distances, whence through his power a multitude of nebulae was drawn which circled around him in a kind of dance, in which, however, it was possible to perceive the sureness and the unswervingness of the forming laws in matter

Hermetes and Hathmes worked together upon the circling substances so long and so strongly that suddenly there began to separate from them parts of matter of varying size, which obediently circled around Apollo and withdrew from him to various distances

At the same time ever more parts of the nebulae were drawn from the unknown distances of the dark space and mingled with the glowing matter which circled at various degrees, each singly upon its own orbit

All mingled and was kneaded, until suddenly a part of this hot and soft substance found itself in the hands of the servant Erda

It was the working of Hermetes that brought into her palms the substance out of which the planet was to be formed, upon which from the beginning there descended a particular radiation of great promise and of hope

Erda experienced all this as something drawing near to the animistic perception of motherhood, when in her palms there trembled the half-living matter which seemed to be something calling to her for help

“Bring this matter to life, Erda!” it sounded through the space

Who called it she did not know

Perhaps it was the voice of Hermetes, perhaps the radiant Apollo called to her, perhaps it was a sounding from O-dio-nar out of the halls of Valhalla, or perhaps it was a voice from heights yet higher, which she did not know

“Bring it to life!” sounded from the heights the call of Mercury, which was in part the voice of O-dio-nar, and at the same time it was called by the youth who in his bright luminosity suddenly stood beside her – Phermos

“Breathe into it thy power and unite thyself with it!”

Erda bent down to that tiny matter which trembled in its heat between her fingers, and with an inward prayer which suddenly was born in her of itself she bowed her head towards the matter

A bright light shone forth in the inner being of the small planet, and it began to turn in her hands

It was glorious

Erda became the guardian of this little particle of matter, but at the same time a new trembling permeated her – she became the mother of this gift of the Father of all

She rejoiced, she wished to dance, yet at the same time a strange painful pressure permeated her, for with her being she had become responsible for this living gift, which expected of her that she would be united with it from the beginning until the very end of all times

Such a great service, such a grace

“Oh, Father of all, I thank Thee, I thank Thee, I thank Thee!” she called upwards to the places whence Hermetes had borne her down and where high above she perceived the starting-point of all the forces which flowed to her

“Now become its heart, enter into this matter,” sounded the voice of Hermetes, and his hand laid itself gently and yet unyieldingly upon the head of the servant Erda

Again all whirled into a rainbow circling of coloured streams, and Erda was lost in this turning space, as though it had swallowed her into itself

When she awakened, she perceived herself entirely differently

She did not know at that moment, because she did not yet know it, that her consciousness had entered into the substance of the matter of the small planet and that under the pressure of Hermetes she had become for the time of learning a part of the gift entrusted to her

She stood in a lofty hall in which all throbbed and glowed as in the nearness of Apollo

In living happening there formed itself out of the power of her radiation a space which, without her being aware of it, shaped that which had been laid into her in Valhalla

Her will, swinging in service to Valhalla, imprinted into the space the memories of the sublimity and the greatness of the places where she was born

Thus her unconscious volition created with animistic power a temple in the centre of the small planet

As the material of which there was here most around, gold served her, which in its fluidity and radiance impressed the forms of glorious columns upon which vaults were formed, converging into narrow summits

There where she stood a radiant space formed itself, which she perceived as her starting-point of working for the time of her serving in these places

In that moment the golden pavement upon which she stood formed steps, and out of these steps there rose upwards a seat of perfectly formed shape

The halls of her service formed themselves upwards and to the sides, and the space grew finer and more luminous the more she recognised how she might rule with the power of her own will

The hall filled itself with her love for the service, as only the animistic kind in Creation is able to do

It was faithfulness and love for this particular place which, although it was not yet at all completed, already bore within itself the bequest of a great mission

Through the space there trembled a beating which seemed to be her own beating, and it sounded as though the great heart of a golden bell had begun to toll the time of the matter enlivened by the animistic weaving of Erda

It sounded through the hall, it sounded through the corridors, it sounded through the space, and Erda rejoiced in this beating, in which she perceived the fulfilment of the life of the child of matter entrusted to her

She rejoiced in it and at the same time perceived a certain sacredness which descended to her from somewhere in the heights

It was as though a great mystery arched itself above her, for she perceived continually that her service was something quite particular

Although she endeavoured to grasp it, it was still forbidden to her, for the great mission of this place she was to learn only when all that was needful for it had ripened

Thus the eye of O-dio-nar followed Erda from the heights, and Herferide too looked down upon this small servant who in her gracefulness seemed rather to be a lovely flower-fairy than the mother of a material planet

But Valhalla knew that she would fulfil, that she would become the faithful servant of the place upon which one day the envoy of God would be able to set foot, in the ray of His Holy Father

“Then let us help her,” thundered the voice of O-dio-nar, who in his certain seeing was permitted to know that which was to be fulfilled far off in a time which was yet to come

And all set itself to work, great streams of radiant forces descended and in them it teemed with life, as when streams of water roll downwards from high mountains

Erda heard strange sounds which were borne through the space around her halls

Then suddenly, as though out of the place where she stood, little sparks leapt forth which in a circling dance became ever more visible in their form

They were the first children of her kind, who were here brought forth out of herself into the space, so as to serve her and to work at the further building of the place around the halls of the golden heart

Ever new streams inclined downwards from the planes of the highest gardens of Asgard, whence the bright Alphar directed themselves down into the distant materialities, followed by the Elves and the Dwarves, who after the first work of the Alphar were to become the lasting administrators of matter

In the distant parts of the earth it boomed and rumbled

Erda called to these places

And then there appeared before her the first Dwarf, who was the appointed king of the red circle which as the first formed itself in the nebula of matter around the palace of Erda

A bright, ruddily glowing red bearing within itself the glow and the heat of his kind radiated from him to all sides, and thus flaming he bowed before his lady

His mantle, from which it sparked and sparkled, resembled molten metal heated to a shining red

Behind this king there appeared a host of Dwarves serving him, who had near them figures shining and radiating almost like Apollo himself

They were the salamanders – the Elves of the element of fire – and these danced merrily around the Dwarves and rejoiced whenever from them the red hoods flared up which the Dwarves wore as a part of their working garb

Their king, the strongest and the wisest Dwarf, stepped before the throne of Erda and promised her his faithful service

He had a crown, and upon his figure the golden parts of his adornment mingled

His face, which shone with the bright gleam of a red colour, bore a long beard, and from beneath the crown braids of plaited hair flowed down over the shining mantle

His beard and his hair trembled with a constant liveliness, and it could be seen that they were full of little fiery salamanders which moved nimbly hither and thither, shining restlessly like little flames and little figures at once

The red king asked Erda for the possibility of forming his kingdom directly in the neighbourhood of her palace, for the glow of the metals over which he ruled was homogeneous with the fluidity of the gold out of which the heart of the earth was formed

Erda joyfully accepted his promise, for she was permitted to see that this king would be a faithful protector to her and would radiate further into the nebulae of the matter of the planet an enlivening light

At her uttering of the request for protection the king turned and with a movement of his shining hand gave a command into the distant spaces of the halls

Out of these places there emerged ruddily glowing dragons which had a mighty and invincible effect

In their origin they were salamanders, and at the same time there was in them something of a higher animistic kind which radiated from them as a glowing courage of the lion kind

They were for Erda a gift from Sirius and from Hareiars for her protection

The red king of the Dwarves set himself to work, and his realm flourished

His palace was in its foundation like the palace of Erda, but it had somewhat less of fineness and of beauty than the first palace which had formed itself directly out of the will of Erda

The red king, however, was content, and his people worked diligently at the glowing forging of the foundations of their realm and of the foundations of the whole planet

In the mighty halls there seethed in red cauldrons metals and substances of every kind, which one day were to rise upwards in veins, so that the earth might be made firm through their cooling

After a short time, when the red king had thus settled himself, there stepped before Erda amid a mighty rumbling another king, who bore within himself a particular kind of hardness

It was the white king of the Dwarves

He too was sent from the gardens of Asgard to the help of Erda, and together with him there descended a stream of servants of varying size and strength who accompanied him

The king stepped before Erda and with a roaring promised her his service, which he was to fulfil

His strength lay in a certain peacefulness, by which he was distinguished from the previous red king

Yet Erda recognised how important this king was for her service, for he and his servants were to prepare that kind of matter which was to become the foundation of all that is firm and resistant for whole ages

In his host there were also enormous servants who gave the impression of invincible giants, and upon the shoulders of these great ones there often sat also the elves of the salamanders, who lit up their shoulders to whiteness

Beside these giants there stood here smaller, less white, rather greyish-looking strong fellows who bore across their shoulders great mallets for their work

Around them there flitted quite small Dwarves who had little hoes, picks and sledges with hammers

A whole host of them there was, beyond all seeing, and all of them, following their king, bowed before Erda and promised her their faithful service

This king too Erda asked for the protection of her halls, and this was promised to her

White four-footed beings resembling great strong animals came at the call of the king, so that he might present them as protectors who would always be ready to protect the most precious lady of this place

And Erda sent out this white king to form with his people his kingdom beyond the borders of the realm of the red king, and the nebula in these parts was to be transformed into a white palace serving him as his seat

The king of these Dwarves bowed before Erda and went forth with his people into the field of working bestowed upon him

Only a short time elapsed, and through the space there spread a particular kind of fragrance

It was a fragrance and at the same time a strange odour, about which those serving Erda could not agree whether it was a sign of nobility or of inferiority

This kind of fragrance announced the coming of a strange king, who likewise presented himself at the command of Asgard

He was sent out from the gardens of Asgard to a work which was to become important for the planet of Erda

It was the black king

His mantle trailed far behind him and gave the impression as though it continually wished to fill all the space with its fluidity

The crown of this king was of gleaming diamonds and shone glitteringly into the space in the form of the reflections of refracted light, like a radiant shimmering

The black king too came with his people

Just as he himself, so also his people had a strange effect, for the blackness of the servants gleamed and thereby created the impression that all was mirrored in it, while at the same time all was swallowed up in it

The black king announced himself with wondrous words

“My lady,” he said in a strange gentle tone, “I have been sent to bring thee life to this place”

Behind these words Erda beheld a picture which descended from the heights, and she recognised that this strange king was sent for something more than the two previous kings

She bowed her sublime head and thanked the Father of all fervently for the wisdom with which He sends her all the servants who bring her great gifts for the fulfilment of her service

Erda joyfully accepted the promise of faithfulness of service from the black king and from his people, who were likewise of the most varied sizes, from giants to the smallest, quite tiny figures which flowed hither and thither in their ceaseless movement

Erda showed this king his field of working and asked him, just as she had the previous kings, for the protection of her halls

Then the king bowed and said: “I have not yet those who would protect this palace, but when the time comes it will be all those who will be sent to me from the gardens of Asgard, it will take time before I first prepare the ground for them, but then they will come in hosts and will protect thee – there everywhere, my lady”

The king with his black hand described a circle around himself

And Erda saw the picture of which this strange king spoke, and she knew that he is the bearer of the life out of which much will yet arise and will become her helpers everywhere where until then there were only nebulae

Erda sent out this king too into the places where he was to settle and to build his seat and also the extensive field of working around this seat

The king did so and began with his people to build the realm which arose out of his particular kind

Thus there formed themselves around the halls of Erda three realms, three spheres of animistic life, each of which unfolded in its own working, and their work glowed through the nebulae which under their pressure and power formed themselves into the outer mantle of the planet

Out of each realm there penetrated into the distant parts veins bearing within themselves their kind of animistic life

These veins mingled and crossed, and in the pressure among one another they formed new kinds of radiation which served as further building stones for the ground of the fourth realm, which was to form itself upon the very surface of the planet

To this work of theirs, which worked from within outwards, there were then added further forces, when Sirius, Orkanos and Neptune sent out their people for the working in this realm, which was to form the cradle for the laying in of that life which was preparing itself high in the gardens of the fine worlds to sink into the density of the universe, where patiently in her service the servant Erda wove the precious place

Such was the beginning of the planet which from a certain time until the present days earthman is permitted to inhabit

In between, however, there were many intermediate stages of which it will still be needful to speak
