Only now, after a fuller approach to the life in Valhalla, after the drawing of the pictures of its inhabitants, the faithful High servants of the animistic kind, can we pause at a place which is the seat of higher inhabitants of the soul-animistic kind
This place is connected with the human paths in Subsequent Creation, for it is bound to the heroism of human spirits during their working in the materialities
In the animistic circle above Subsequent Creation a special place therefore belongs to the fulfilling of the virtue of heroism and courage, for this manner of life is near to the animistic in its own devotion, which it experiences unceasingly and for the sake of which, in its fulfilment, it is also ready to do everything without regard for itself
In the fulfilling of heroically courageous deeds there always swings a certain connection with the primordially created knight Leo, and in this stream a certain part of the animistic servants works directly
These therefore always prize this homogeneous, courageous kind of conduct, and at their urging there was also formed a place in which there may dwell the animistic parts of the human spiritual radiation of those who through their heroic deeds became acknowledged by the animistic servants
This place lies above the gardens of Asgard and is at the same time, in a certain sense, the antechamber of Valhalla
Therefore it was also first needful, for the right understanding, to bring nearer in a certain sequence the degrees of the gardens of Asgard as well, where many kinds of animistic servants work in a division which always leads them to certain definite labours and also to certain places in the circularly graduated gardens
We needed to catch a picture which shows how vast the expanses of these places are, whereas the earthly concept of a garden creates in part a mistaken form, for with this concept men see before their eyes only a small expanse
This still needs to be rightly grasped in the essence which belongs to this concept in connection with Asgard
The concept of a garden in the animistic does not correspond to the concepts here on Earth, for the expanse of one such graduated garden of Asgard would in proportion encompass within itself the greatest parts of the material world-parts together with their universes and their ethereal places
It is best pictured thus, that the gardens in the animistic are in reality immense expanses of luminous worlds in which everything, in strictly harmonious interlocking, weaves its service in the greatest enthusiasm and joy
In the animistic we shall always find only joyfulness, even when it is a question of the manifestations of those highest forces and pressures which in a single moment would crush a universe
Joyfulness is proper to the animistic, for it swings in the ray of Mercury which receives into itself the Will of Parzival and of Imanuel, the kind of this radiation impressing upon everything nothing but the certainty of the nearness of the breath of God in Creation
And it is precisely the awareness of this nearness, in which the animistic swings above the materialities and within the materialities, that always leads it to an inner enthusiasm for joyful service
Thus in the gardens of Asgard everything flows in a joyful weaving which raises them higher towards Valhalla, upon which all the degrees of the gardens directly depend
A garden, as we have already said, is meanwhile a concept which is not to form a picture of size, but a picture of boundedness
A garden is the same as that for which the concept of a space, which is always bounded, might stand
It has therefore the form of a space which is complete both towards the sides and upwards, whither in its extent it rises
The gardens of Asgard are bounded towards the sides in circular fashion, and at the given outer rim there lie the reservoirs which we have called oceans, in which, always at a distance according to the measure of consciousness, there is some kind of the soul-animistic which still awaits its development
Lowest here is the animistic of the unconscious basic soul kind, which upon its return always dissolves into the whole, which thus develops in its collective consciousness
A degree higher there are the souls of the unconscious animal kind and also the germs of the purely animistic kind, which again divide into degrees according to their basic degree of radiance and strength
Further upwards we shall find still other degrees rising in circles, which lead up to the place where, above the great divide, lie the first degrees of the actual seat of the highest animistic servants in the work of Subsequent Creation, that is of Valhalla
The name Asgard is derived from these highest-lying gardens, where the strongest of the radiant Aesir stand, guarding Valhalla itself at the lower gates
Asgard therefore also means the guarding degrees of Valhalla
Only after a certain time, when they are able more easily to perceive the finer spheres above the materialities, will men grasp that glory which is bound up with these places of purely animistic working in the gardens of Asgard
Directly above the gardens lies the lower circle of the High animistic servants, where we also find their glorious buildings, from which they work in the directions of their service
And in this part there lies also the annexe to the very halls of O-dio-nar's palace, whither the sublime Valkyries bring the heroes whose basic core was of the spiritual kind
It is a remarkable happening which deserves its own description, one that will yet be devoted to this place separately
We shall not now dwell closely upon this description, for at this moment one name bound up with this glorious luminous place of Valhalla is important for us
This name is Herakliones
A heroic champion who long ago became the very first animistic part of a human spirit to be borne up to these places by the Valkyries at the entreaty of certain High animistic servants
The sublime champion Herakliones
In gleaming armour he works here in his place as leader and as model for all the others who were borne hither after him
He is the one who holds the highest watch here in the hall of this spacious annexe
His fulfilment is service in heroic accord with all those animistic servants who, in their kind of service in the radiation of the primordially created Leo, have the archetype of heroism, of courage and of strength
Herakliones is here in a certain sense the ruler of this place, and at the same time he stands as first servant at the head of a host which for thousands of years has been preparing for the great battle with the darkness in the materialities
The fulfilment of the privilege of being permitted to be here is the sublime battle for the Light
Through the dome where Herakliones works there resounds the unceasing ringing of weapons, as the radiation of the heroes dwelling here, who were raised hither by the Valkyries out of all the parts of the materialities, keeps itself in lasting wakefulness and strength
Truly, here the actual fulfilment of life is honourable battle
Those who are permitted to dwell here are in every moment companions to one another, and each single one is prized as are all
Strength and boldness radiate from the figures, which have the forms of the most perfect champions
Their shining bodies are covered by armour of sparkling lustre
Breastplates cover the chest, and in part the arms and the legs, of this ideal human appearance which foreordains the form of the hero, as he is finally to look in the earthly world also
Human inspirations about many noble heroes in the materialities draw unknowingly from these places
Here there are whole regiments of these heroes
They are best pictured as the most perfect army of antiquity
Each of these champions, in mutual practice combat with the others, is ready for the call of Herakliones to march against the darkness
In his skill in handling weapons too, be it swords, spears, axes, bows and arrows, he is for the earthly conception of battle the most exemplary pattern of perfection and of fitness in every single movement with the weapon
Among the fighting figures Herakliones walks, and for each he always has a joyful word of encouragement and also counsel, for he is able to handle every weapon almost as masterfully as can the high animistic ones Hareiars, Hearthemis, Haetheine and others who belong to the warlike kind of the animistic
As has already been said, Herakliones was the first who was borne up hither to these places
His original name was Erykliones, for Erykliones is the name of the spirit and of the bearer of the animistic covering
At the intercession of Hareiars his name was permitted to be altered so that there was added to it the precious letter H, which only the highest animistic servants of Valhalla may bear
It was a solemn event at which all the mighty servants whose meaning of service is battle came together, and in a pillar of fire the soul-animistic shell of Erykliones was raised to an independent, purely animistic degree
Men have of this only partial, fragmentary tidings from records which have been preserved and in which it is mentioned that the hero of the Greek legends, Herakles, was borne up to Olympus in a pillar of fire
That is a picture which confuses, which leads to misunderstanding, and readers of the legends must suppose that it is an invention
The reality was otherwise
At the time when the path of Erykliones in the materialities of one of the world-parts was at an end, at the flaring up of the fire which was to purify the spiritless material shell, the animistic servants the Valkyries drew near at the sign of Hareiars to the spirit of Erykliones, and during his rising upwards they at a certain moment lifted his animistic radiation from his shoulders
This radiation was borne into the antechamber of Valhalla, that for its heroism it might be permitted to remain in the nearness of the sublime animistic servants who had taken pleasure in the material heroism of Erykliones
Thus this animistic part dwelt here in joyful accord with the animistic life
At a certain time the shell of the hero Erykliones became further raised and became equal to the animistic fellow fighters through the addition of a spark given by O-dio-nar himself
The sublime spirit of Erykliones, who bore this shell, was permitted to take part in this happening, and the ray of his spiritual radiation united with the animistic kind in such a way that the shell in the animistic is in part made independent of him and serves in faithful devotion just as the animistic servants do
Even if the spirit of Erykliones should one day fall and have to be condemned, his part in the animistic is so far independent that it would remain under the protection of Valhalla also further, for the eternity of its duration, in which Valhalla is by the Will of the Father of all to stand upon the summit of the work of Subsequent Creation
The spirit of Erykliones, however, dwells in the light and is always ready to add, through the shell in the animistic, a portion of his spiritual heroism which burns within him
His time too will still come, for he also will be among the great spiritual helpers who in the materialities of Ephesus will strike at all evil and impurity
His animistic mantle, which was raised to independence, thus the courageous Herakliones now more comprehensibly knowable to us, is likewise preparing for the announced time when the animistic servants will be called to the complete extirpation of all furies and harpies
It is the awaited hunt for the furies, the harpies and the phantoms, to which all the champions with Herakliones at their head have been looking forward for thousands of years
For this cleansing task the host of his warriors has also been trained without ceasing over a long time, called as they are to a victorious campaign against all that is unlovely which in the finer gradation of the gross material world has arisen out of human perversity and which here, under the influence of the fallen archangel, manifests itself all too presumptuously
Out of the workshop of despairing spirits fallen to the darkness there were formed over a long time, seemingly with impunity, living forms of furies and harpies which in turn attacked not only their creators, but also other men who were more luminous and who inhabited the earthly world for their own ripening
For the liberation of the spiritually purer men there is now the time when, after the wild revel of the loosed furies, that these might fall upon all the places where in men there is a soil of homogeneity for it, and when in the process the greatest part of the furies will at last tear one another to pieces, as will likewise happen in the inner volition of many men, the hunt for the remaining darkness will then set in
After the furious battle among the furies themselves only a smaller portion of them will remain here, yet at the same time these will be the strongest of the creatures
These will seek to hurl themselves upon mankind for its complete overpowering, even though at that time there will remain here, after many preceding siftings, predominantly only men of purer volition
Among these partly pure ones, however, there will still be a great number of lukewarm, spiritually unawakened men
Then in that moment the luminous array of heroes and champions will set forth, prepared as they are for the battle which will then come in the finer world around men
It will be a fierce battle, and the heroes of Valhalla will lead their weapons with sureness against everything that is marked by the luminous ray as disintegrating and molesting
Herakliones will be at the head of this luminous wedge of warriors, which like an arrow will hurl itself into the filth of the material worlds in order to cleanse them with its liberating power
Thus the battles will take their course in the fine, but a part will penetrate right into the gross material world and will shake, like a last inner fever, many men who under the pressure of this battle will yet collapse in their unsteadiness
Thus some will evidently yet sink in their lukewarmness and will have to join the disinherited, for their fear will call forth in them a new dependence upon the connection with the furies, which will sink their claws into their souls
The state of thinking of such men will be pitiable, and in the end their inner despair will become manifest to the whole world
All weakness and unsteadiness will well up out of them as mistrust and resistance, so that after such a manifestation they will at once be struck by the weapons in the strong arms of the gleaming warriors of Valhalla
Yes, it will be exactly as it was promised thousands of years ago
The luminous ranks of warriors will fly above the heads of men, and wherever a connection with the last impurity and baseness, in vanity and in want of humility, is revealed to them, there they will strike at once
Fierce and short will be the close of these battles, when at last even the strongest of the furies will be destroyed, thereafter to dissolve into a drifting haze of the fine gross materiality and of the ethereal, which will be freed from all that is impure which worked within it on the part of men, until it had formed itself into a living core of savage negative forms of life
Creatures resembling in part a human and in part an animal appearance wandered through all the ages above this earthly world in order to seek out homogeneity in men, upon whom they then fell without mercy
Woe then to that one among men who gave them too much attention out of himself, so that through something homogeneous within him he became their vassal
Whoever has not up to this moment freed himself in the purest volition from their influence is already almost certainly lost, for the furies, in expectation of the battle, will strive to drag as many human spirits as possible down into their own destruction
Splendidly and surely, however, has Herakliones prepared his knighthood for the coming battle, which will begin before long
Indeed it is already beginning to fulfil itself in its first manifestations
Already everything is gathering for the storm
Clad in his full armour, Herakliones looks down towards the materialities
The strongest of his men, who in all the world-parts were renowned heroes, stand at his side, and their invincibility fills the furies with dread and horror
Here are the animistic figures of Hector, of Achilles and of many other heroes from all nations and from all the world-parts of the materialities
With every ringing of a sword, with every bright call to battle, fury and resistance rise in the ranks of the darkness
It is, however, a resistance that is vain from the outset, for the might of the superior force which lies in the courage and the strength of the mentioned warriors breaks all will to resist beforehand
In the end all of it will lead only to the ghastly death-rattle of the vanquished darkness and to the ensuing nebulous vapour, which will afterwards have to be purified still by the hammer of Thonorun and the gale of Orkanos
Thereafter will come a liberation in the fine surroundings of the Earth such as the men of today will no longer know at all
It will be like a sunny day of beginning spring filled with peace, in which the shining of Apollo's kindly radiance draws near to the Earth, bringing strengthening to all that is pure which will be preserved after the battles
The victory song of the champions led by Herakliones will at that time resound through the universe as praise to the Lord, the Holy God for His Blessed Son Parzival, who through the nearness of his Ray brought help to all who long for the Light
