Many men are looking out for the near coming of something new
Impatiently they await the coming of the longed-for liberating change which is to bring a fundamental improvement of life on this Earth
As men see much that is wrong in the life around them, as everything falls prey to the evil influences of the ferment of society, the number of these impatient waiters keeps on growing
Out of their ranks there goes forth an ever louder call for the setting right of all things
Outwardly it then appears that those men who speak of how with each day the present world sinks into a desperate abyss of values are at the same time already those who are the most ready for that promised dawn of the new age
In their expectation of the changes, which in itself is of worth, there lies hidden, however, a persistent quiet demand which does not allow it to be so
This demand is a fundamental obstacle to the coming of something new into their life, and in part also to the whole Earth
It is the demand to hold fast to the existing limited knowledge of God and of the work of Creation with which the said men go through life
Since this demand for the preservation of backwardness in knowledge stands immediately beside the great wish for changes for the better, it creates an insurmountable obstacle to the possibility of a beneficent connection of the said men with the approaching coming of the new
The connection can come only through the spiritual enlightenment which brings with it the possibility of liberation and of ascent
Where there is no longing for this enlightenment, there no change can come about
Men fancy that they may keep their present manner of knowing in the very things wherein in reality the highest liveliness in intuitive perceiving and in thinking is already to prevail
It is nothing other than an immobility of thought
It is a comfortable satisfaction with one's own condition, with which the majority reflect upon life
The notion of retaining this immobility of thought within oneself is precisely that quiet demand which on the one hand contains a failure to grasp the working of God, and on the other hand there is at the same time reflected in it the presumption of the intellect, for that immobility in the thinking of the said men consists in this, that they picture the coming of the new age in such a way that everything shall come to pass with the greatest consideration for their own quiet and comfort, which is bound up with the complacent conceit of the intellect that it knows everything best
It is bound up with the wish that the new should at last become the present, and yet that the man calling for this new thing might remain untouched in many respects of his existing approach to life
The change is to come under conditions in which the men who expect it will at the same time be willing, for their own part, to change everything in their hitherto manner of thinking and acting
There prevails in it the unspoken demand that the Light should show forbearance towards what men are in their many ways of thinking and acting
For many men it suffices that they recognise that the existing world is bad and that they call feverishly for the coming of a better world
By this alone they regard themselves as those who are further on than the rest, and thereby as being ready for that new thing
All too often we may hear the words: “I am simply the sort of man I am, my long-standing habits are ingrained in me”
We may also catch many a sigh, “Ah, I am a little man, what can I accomplish in all this. I do not feel myself to be the one who is to be a bearer of changes. Let another come, one who is stronger, who will do it all”
This and much else besides is uttered as an excuse for continuing to hold fast to the learned manner of thinking with which men, out of mere habit, approach the several ways of acting in daily life
Words are also often used which are meant to confirm that men are in fact undeserving victims of the present happening of society on Earth
In these assertions the greater part of society is depicted as the victim of only a small number of evil individuals serving the darkness, who rule this world
It creates the impression that all good men are enslaved by someone hidden who stands above them and works persistently and purposefully against their otherwise very good-natured manner of life
For a long time now this has served as a good excuse for everyone who cherishes the wish to be seen as one who does indeed long for something better, but who can himself do nothing about it
Yet there can be no greater self-deception than precisely this notion
For it holds true that human society as a whole is of necessity composed of individual human spirits
The inner core of every man is a human spiritual spark, which is thereby of equal worth with that of all other men
To each one, therefore, exactly the same power for life was given by the Creator as to all the other inhabitants of spiritual origin
There is therefore no one stronger and no one weaker, so far as the human spiritual inner core is concerned
The spiritual spark bears within it great capacities for its unfolding
Yet this inward power of the spiritual spark is still unrecognised, for it is evident that hitherto it has almost never been fully used by men in daily life
And yet the great promise holds good that this human spiritual spark is endowed with the capacity for a truly exceptional kind of radiation into its surroundings, if the Light can stream fully through it
The streaming of the Light through the individual man is conditional upon his enduring pure attunement
A single man could therefore mediate to this Earth wondrous strengthenings of an unheard-of kind, if…if only he first found the inward courage to unite himself wholly with the Light
That, however, in the present state of men requires a movement which is the opposite of the prevailing immobility of many
Change is possible for everyone, if only he truly wills it
The courage of one single man to will to change his approach to life then works at once far and wide not only for himself, but such striving is at the same time a radiated help for many other earthmen
That is a lawful happening which holds good unshakeably throughout the whole duration of this Earth
But the power of the spiritual volition of all-embracing good is today not used as it could and also should be
The human disposition of a voluntary spiritual unfreedom lasts on exactly as it has done through whole centuries
The only thing subject to change is the outward material forms, which are governed by the results of the intellectual scientific endeavour of men
Many men today therefore live in luxury compared with earlier times, but within them they are still just as unfree as the bondsmen of that day, fettered by the thought that they must not permit themselves to perceive and to think otherwise than their ruler wills
In the whole history of mankind there were only very few who were inwardly able to rise up against this, because their spirit longed with all its strength for true freedom
Unfreedom is to be found only where there is no will to a movement of one's own, thus where a certain kind of lukewarmness and indolence remains
Everything stays in the old ruts of the deceptive notion that earthman appears as a victim delivered up to the mercy of evil forces
And yet, seen from the standpoint of the great development of God in the Subsequent Creation, everything on Earth has now changed
It no longer holds true that the darkness has the upper hand, as was perhaps the case in the times when the Sacred Spear, which determines the development of the happening in the Subsequent Creation, rested in the hands of the tempter
The fallen Archangel is bound
For some time now the Spear has been in the hand of Parzival, blessed by God the Father
There is therefore no greater power than that which comes as help from God through the near radiation of the Ray of Parzival
Men who, although they have the knowledge of the Grail Message, speak again and again of a continuing predominance of evil on Earth nourish, in their habitual disposition, wrong thought-forms which rob this world of the needed strengthening for the liberation and refreshing of those who still need encouragement to draw a new breath of spiritual freedom
It is something wrong to direct one's thinking unceasingly and predominantly upon that which is perceived as evil and bad
Such a thing stands in opposition to the helping effects of the Light, which stoops to everyone who has awakened within him the courage to change his manner of understanding, his life and the meaning of this whole earthly world
It literally stands as an obstacle against the development and the progress of the present time
The Light cannot be served through thoughts of fear and mistrust
Nor is it possible to have connection with the Light if there burns in a man the volition for retribution against those whom he holds to be bad men or enemies
All this is a continued walking along wrong ways
Above all, however, it is a sign of a rigidity in the manner of thinking which still persists
And precisely rigidity of thinking is something which will not be able to stand firm at the coming of the new age
Since it is promised from the Light that everything will become new, this means that what exists, and thus also all that remains in motionless rigidity, will not be able to abide upon the step where it stands today
By this is not meant the actual present state of men's knowledge, which is often very varied, in proportion to the opinion from which their thinking proceeds
It is a matter of course that the conditions of various doctrines of faith or of commonly accepted opinions may differ greatly from man to man
The core of what a man needs first to change is his fundamental approach to life
It is the recognition of the condition of movement forward in that which no one else can do in place of the individual – in the decision for an enduring volition of all-embracing good
That is precisely the new thing which comes as the condition for a change for the better for the whole world
Whoever resolves to step out in a new direction will also be granted, through the help from the Light, all the needed knowledge, so that he may become ever surer upon his way
The present widening of knowledge is in itself already a preliminary step of the awaited enlightenment
It may therefore be said that the first part of all the promised changes is already unfolding
The knowledge is to bear interest in the changing of everything upon oneself and within oneself, and that in such a way that consonance with the great Harmony which pervades the whole work of Creation is attained
Not to use the knowledge means immobility, which is an obstacle to the personal ascent of the individual
By immobility is meant precisely the insufficient vigilance of the intuitively perceiving inner core, and thereby of the capacity for liveliness and mobility in reflecting on all that comes, for this is the most important preparatory soil for the changes
With knowledge the spirit can be reborn, so as to come alive and to gain in strength in its will to change everything for the better
Readiness and vigilance of the inner core is therefore the condition for every man rightly to discern all that comes with the new age
And precisely that which of necessity now comes with the new age to the Earth is a still wider knowledge of all that surrounds man in the helping radiation, down to the smallest connections
Therefore the coming age may be called a great spiritual enlightenment
The enlightenment, which reaches into many hitherto hidden places of man's understanding of life, is that beneficent happening which will at last bring to the Earth a great advance in development for the whole of human society
Enlightenment always carries clarification into all the connections and thereby prepares the soil for a change in the inner being and in the thoughts of man
The most important thing to be changed in the approach to life upon its personal plane is the attunement of the all-embracing volition of good, and that regardless of everything else that is still to be found among men today
The volition of good is a kind of spiritual radiation which originally was meant to be something self-evident in the life of men, and yet, under the influence of the tempter and his minions through their working upon the love of comfort in men, this so precious radiation of the human inner core became through whole millennia something remote, until at last even today its regaining appears to men as something exceedingly hard and laborious
But that is a false picture furnished to man by his own intellect
Deep within itself the spirit knows this kind of radiation, in which, together with pure childlikeness, there are contained confidence in the victory of the Light, hope and enthusiasm for every single experiencing of the moment of the present
Forgiving too is an inseparable part of the attunement of all-embracing good in man
But this is just what often fails in the daily present life of men, where the intellect still holds sway
Owing to intellectuality that all-embracing volition of good has become for many a distant goal, of whose attainability the intellect doubts beforehand
Even before the spirit resolves upon this step of becoming truly and wholly confident in the victory of the Light, doubts already arise beforehand in the thoughts, which grow so great that in the end they eat away entirely all the first will to change
But in spite of all this there is no other way to the Light
It cannot be attained otherwise than by the radiation of goodness filling the whole man all-embracingly, like a mountain torrent rushing down with might, whereby it wholly determines the arising of every new thought, and everything that burdens is left entirely aside
All the mistrust which is endlessly fed by the ballast of the daily news, treating of ever new gropings of men in all the parts of their life throughout the whole earthly world, needs to be washed away
From without, along these old ways, there can never come new tidings bearing within them a helping power for liberation
Again and again only pictures of the human world are brought, which can never bring anything other than a description of all that is taking place in the present climax of all the human ferment
Only when the greater part of the whole hitherto disposition of the world of human society has changed will outward tidings too be able to bring encouragement, for then there will be contained in them, as a beneficent driving power, that will towards the volition of all-embracing good among men
But that is yet to come
Today it is not yet so, for everything hitherto in the world of men unfolds out of the inward disposition of individuals
And many men do not yet have within them enough power for the good, because nothing of the new knowledge is yet anchored in them, and thereby they lack the opportunity to lay hold of the rope of Light of the Truth, in which enlightenment lies
But alas, in addition to all this, those who have the knowledge of the Truth, even if only in part, are immobile in this very thing, that the power of a living enthusiasm for the good should shine out in them
In many a man bitterness towards his fellow-men remains
There is maintained within them an all-too-ready inflammability of anger even over the smallest things, over which a mature spirit ought surely to pass lightly with a smile
It is the agitation over trifles which draws precious powers away from the human spirit and away from the high task of maintaining a joyful attunement
And besides all this there dwell in the attunement of the inner being of man, instead of the courage springing from confidence in God's help, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, confusion and many further forms of intuitive vibration which should never have had so much room on Earth, for they are a sign of spiritual groping
All this needs to be overcome through the inward awakening of the will to all-embracing good
The spirit itself bears within it everything needful for this
It needs only to be freed from all the burden of thought-forms which bear a disintegrating power within them and thereby rob the spirit of its confidence in God's help and in the victory of the Light
God's help and also the all-penetrating victorious radiation of the Light are here
Men need only unite themselves with them in pure enthusiasm
Then much will change of that which today still appears heavily entrenched on Earth
And yet nothing is any longer supported as it was for a long time
The Ray of Parzival penetrates everything and shakes all the dogmas of man's narrowed understanding of life
It is a liberating work in which the Sacred Spear works just as it always should have
Thus it leads human spirits upwards to the Light
Only a short time will still pass before everything is transformed in the present ferment of society, so that this strengthening working of the Ray of Parzival may assert itself visibly outwardly
But every luminous thought, every vibration of joyful enthusiasm in helping other men, already works now as an invincible power which, in connection with the radiation of the Ray of Parzival, transforms this world towards the near time which will thereafter come as the fulfilment of all expectations
In the thoughts of men this should blaze like the hope-filled radiance of the Light rising upon the Earth
The greater Light for which men have waited from time immemorial is now here
This knowledge should kindle in the inner being of man a radiant confidence in the All-Wisdom of God, and thereby wholly transform his still persisting disposition of thought
Through the universe there penetrates a radiation of the Light which bears within it the Harmony of God
Whoever unites himself with it through the complete quickening of the volition of all-embracing good will be able to enter freely and unhindered into the new age on Earth
That in itself is a rescue for the human spirit
May those, then, who already today bear within them knowledge through the enlightenment of the Truth hold fast the strong and joyful conviction that in the end there will be a great host of such human spirits
