A Strong, Healthy Spirit

To be healthy, self-assured, free and strong is the wish of the majority of men
But rightly to know which way leads to the fulfilment of this wish is already the first pitfall upon which the efforts of many men are shattered
Seemingly there offers itself a multitude of helping ways
Yet a great part of them leads to no result, for these ways seek for the most part to change only the outward matters of man, wherein he is then, according to the instructions of others, to seek a support for his own inner strength
This is incompatible with the essence of true help for man
Outward matters, resting upon such steps as the calming of the mind or the labour of mastering moodiness, do not lead to a lasting attainment of strength and health in man
Although they bring a certain shifting towards the better, in reality they can never lead to a true strength and soundness of the spirit
The said ideals of which we speak unfold always and solely from the quickening attunement of the very inner nature of man
In the highest striving there needs to be awakened the most important thing in the nature of man – the spiritual spark
The spark is not awakened by exercises nor by the observing of oneself, but only by the flaring up of an all-sweeping and all-comprehensive will towards the good
Thereby the spark blazes up into a flame and gives a clear strength and purity in the intuitive perceiving
Our inner being comes alive and in the natural unfolding of its capacities brings a healthy, strengthening perceiving of the world about us
Where there is a healthy and pure inner being in man, there is the foundation out of which in the end there always arises also the outward ascent and success
The spirit will arise and will of itself take over the dominion over the remaining degrees of the coverings, from the finest of the animistic and of the soul down to the earthly body
The clear, living and strong shining of the spirit is the foundation of all things
Such is the right way foreordained by God's wisdom
In contrast to spiritual liveliness and strength, it is precisely today that spiritual weakness is widespread upon Earth, which is to be observed everywhere about us
Weakness, or even a crippling drowsiness of the spirit, is thereby the cause of many hardships which accompany man upon his way through this world and through the beyond
He who is not inwardly sufficiently alive within himself will always be exposed to the loss of freedom at the hands of the outward influences which are about him
Why this is so, the Law of Movement, which is omnipresent in the work of Creation, brings in a simple answer
Without movement there is no life, all things grow dim, weaken, sink, falling at last into complete languor
This law holds good also in the case of man, in the case of our inner, spiritual nature
The issuing point of the strength of man lies in the motion of the spirit, which radiates with a joyful sparkling and mobility, wherein it is ready to create and to shape the space in which it finds itself, towards its unceasing progress and ennobling
The ascent and the restoration to health, so much sought after by men, lies therefore in the renewing of the strength in the inner being of man
This renewing of strength can in reality easily be brought to life, for there is nothing more proper to each one of men than the awakening of an inward longing for a pure and joyful attunement
The awakening of this longing is joined with the flash of an immediate, all-overcoming faith in a better development of things in life
In this faith in a better future there is contained the high goal of the spiritual kind itself, for if we let our inner being soar upwards in joyful trust in the good outcome of all things, then at once there unites itself with man, in proportion to the pure childlikeness of this welling up and soaring of the inner being, a stream of power directed towards him from the luminous heights of the spiritual home, for help upon his further way
The spirit, our inward vibration, is able in the welling up of a fervent longing for the Light to divine the glory of the spiritual home, which in that moment is so near to it
There is nothing easier and more natural than a mighty inward welling up of the longing for the Light in man
The Power sent to him for his help then rushes down from the heights to meet this welling up of longing and at once quickens through an uplifting radiation, which unites itself with the spiritual nature of the inner being of man
Soaring, happiness and a way out then pour themselves through the inner being of man, and even if this state should last but a moment, there comes about an anchoring of the Light in the inner being, which endures
The strengthening, blissful stream flowing in from the heights can thereafter at any time be renewed through a fresh flaring up, whenever man longs for it in a pure attunement
Thus the inner being gradually recovers and gains ever more in certainty and in an ardent assent to life
It divines the nearness of the spiritual worlds in Creation, it divines the greatness and the glory of the Love of God, which caused all this to arise to a jubilant existence
The interest in recognising the connections of life, the healing assent to all that vibrates in creative activity and in enriching co-operation, all these are signs of an awakened spirit which is moving towards soundness and strength
A high goal, inward joy and a lasting ennobling are the manifestation of spiritual liveliness
Therefore away with all that departs from this attunement and moves towards a wavering superficiality, towards a rigid dogmatism, towards the sleep which at last brings spiritual enfeeblement and languor
The weakness of the spirit is at the same time the cause of many happenings which man as a rule does not connect at all with his inner being
In the weakness of the spirit unnaturalness draws near to man from all directions, that is, the deviation which today is generally called illnesses of the soul
All the disorders which finally manifest themselves as psychic troubles, bodily insufficiencies, ponderous reasoning, a lack of natural intelligence, tendencies towards a splitting of the personality, towards delusion, or tendencies towards fanaticism, all these are signs of the weakness of the spirit
However much the men of today outwardly seek to excuse themselves for all this, or even speak in the exalting of their affliction as of something singular which is to lead those around them to considerateness and to adapting themselves to them upon the same plane, this changes nothing in the fact that it is an insufficiency, a sign of an unnatural, unhealthy condition
This is confirmed by the fact that these men often take medicines, and if they knew how to bring their state permanently to a more normal, more joyful existence, they would change it at once
And yet one thing alone holds good: any disorder of the psychic kind has its origin in the spiritual weakness of man
The only exceptions are those situations where a mechanical injury of the brain comes about through an accident or through illness
But even these situations do not come by chance and are therefore not brought upon man without a preceding cause, which just often lies in the unwatchfulness and the immobility of the spirit
Naivety also, which is often excused by many and which is the joining of an ignorance of the conditions here on Earth with an unhealthy attitude, that is, with a foolish acting lacking living intuitive perceiving, is a sign of a certain weakness of the spirit
The strengthening and the restoring to health of a weak spirit is the way to the removal of the greatest part of all the illnesses and sufferings which are called the illnesses of the modern age
Sooner or later there must also dissolve, under the insight of a spiritual movement restored to health, all the socially naive conceptions of a boundless equality of men upon Earth, an equality which is not able to comprehend that it is spiritual maturity which determines the fundamental difference between the men who live their life here
This is not to be a denial of humanity, but only the ordering of the conditions for a healthy experiencing of life, wherein the determinant of position in society is to be the measure of spiritual maturity repeatedly proved through life, which in the right direction of striving always manifests itself only through pure striving, honesty, nobility of character and wise acting in the most varied conditions
Everyone who only wills it can behold when the true radiance of the spiritual inner being of man manifests itself and when it is merely a matter of an outward dissembling before the world
A truly radiant spirit is easily recognisable, for he always acts with a higher survey, directing his thoughts to the help of others in accord with the great Laws of Creation
The liveliness and the radiance of the spirit is the chief thing which is to be fulfilled by men, to the brightest degree of the clarifying of the flame of the inner being
In the time to come there will also be men upon Earth with a clearer perceiving for these differences, and therefore it will no longer be possible that so much grief and suffering should arise, which today is still a common occurrence
In many men there will of itself be born a greater receptivity also for such things as the beholding of the radiance of the spirit, which manifests itself not only in deeds, but already in the whole vibration which spreads itself inseparably about every man
Suddenly it will be intuitively perceived clearly and distinctly what proceeds from the good and what from the evil
The cunning and the twisting which hold good hitherto will gradually become groundless
Despite all the mobility which works in the everyday situations in the earthly world of men, the fundamental root will always be clearly discerned, out of which kind of volition the given man proceeds
The decisive thing in this will be the said radiance of the spirit, which cannot be deceived, which speaks exactly of the man
The living radiance of the spirit is also the foundation of the equipment for a truly and fully experienced life here on Earth and for the whole further existence of the human spirit upon its way to the home in the spiritual world
The weakness of the spirit is, in contrast, crippling and causes a self-injuring which suspends all progress of man upon his way to maturity
Inward, pure happiness and joy together with the mobility of the intuitive perception are a lasting safeguard against the languor of the inner being
At the same time it is also the only effective safeguard against the decline and the ruin of human society
A sense for joy, for pure jesting, at the same time a sense for order and for intelligibility to others, is an attunement which for its manifestation needs a healthy and strong spirit
To be simple and at the same time soundly reasoning, that is the manifestation of the will of a strong spirit in an earthly body
Sound and strong reasoning, this equipment makes it possible also to see through all the qualities and manifestations of evil, which from time to time seek to draw near to every man, in order to influence him and to seek to drag him down upon their enslaving way
If today children are born with dispositions for the most varied psychic troubles, then the cause of their hardships lies in a previous spiritual enfeeblement, which could not have come about in any other way than through the loss of the inward movement in one of the preceding stretches of the development of the spirit
The loss of mobility comes through comfort-seeking and through indolence in the striving for an independent movement in intuitive perceiving and in reasoning
It may be said that in the loss of its living will towards movement such a spirit came to a standstill upon its way of development
Indeed, it is possible directly to draw the picture that the spirit, like a wanderer in the desert, exhausted itself in the seeking of side issues, of secondary things which had almost no significance for its inward soundness, and at the same time it also passed by all the precious moments which upon its journeying through the far distances offered it refreshment
The spirit lost the direction towards the high goal, went astray, and at last in the exhausting of itself grew unaccustomed to that for which at the beginning of its way it longed immeasurably, it grew unaccustomed to the liveliness of its own inward movement
The most important thing for the health and the strength of the spirit vanished from it and thus shifted the way, which originally was clear and evident, into the confusions and the loops of wandering
An unceasing striving after the union with its home in the spiritual world is the keeping open of a passable way, which through a longing ever anew renewed remains free and thereby cannot be overgrown with thorn-bushes, which would close it and render it impassable
If there unfolds in the inner being of man an immobility which causes the weakness and the sleep of the spirit, then there enter in all the accompanying means, including psychic hardships, whether already innate or appearing in a psychic shifting during life
The strength and the soundness of the spirit excludes anything of the kind
Thus we may take it as a rule that a healthy and strong human spirit cannot be in a body which is psychically or mentally or intellectually afflicted
Isolated exceptions, which may be described as the fulfilment of the voluntary acceptance of such a burdened way by some luminous soul for the help of its fellow men, whom it loves and to whom it wishes through its state to give help, cannot overturn the rule, which otherwise holds good in this to the letter
It is therefore in the highest degree needful to take this fact as the foundation and to work with every sick person in such a way that he may first gain within himself the inward strength which will bring him again, gradually, step by little step, the restoration to health
The patient labour of supplementing trust and above all of renewing the experiencing of pure joy is the way to the restoration to health of millions of men who today are psychically ill
It is also the prevention which all those need who perhaps today are still in strength
For even mere wavering and occasional mistrust leads today, for example, to alcoholism, to drugs and to other deviations which otherwise have no cause to enter into the life of a healthy, strong man
Hope, a way out, a pure joyful advancing forward is the only remedy for the strengthening of the spiritual inner being of man
If this grows strong and gains the upper hand over the weakness, then all things will grow bright and before man there will appear immediately the prospects of a clear direction
Let us hold our inner being in a lasting, quickening attunement of healthy joy and of trust in a better development of our way
Let us also be on our guard against any beginning deviation from naturalness, at the loss of trust in ourselves
The pressure of the present time grows stronger, it shakes the trust of many a one who but recently passed with others for the sure pledge of a safe source of joyfulness
Let us every day let a vibration of the pure stream of the Light penetrate our inner being, which unites us with the spiritual home in the spheres near to God's radiation, bringing a lasting blissful uplifting
Every day, though it be but for a moment, let us let our spirit soar upwards, to draw breath from the streams wherein the jubilant message of the luminous heights descends to us
Only thus can we grow strong and hold in a healthy attunement our inner being, our spirit
Whoever makes the above-mentioned attitude towards life his own will be endowed for the present time with a manifold blessing from the Light
Out of the Grace of God the radiation of the Light will be added to him, that he may be a certainty upon the way for himself and also for all others
